Kenya's 1963 Independence constitution was partly written by Justice Thurgood Marshall (first black US Chief Justice ,friends with Kenya Nationalists Tom Mboya, Oginga Odinga and Jomo Kenyatta), particularly the section on rights of racial minorities, whites, asians/indians, arabs, jews etc as a result white Kenyans and other groups coming into Kenya were welcomed to this day including white South Africans(Afrikaans) brought to Kenya in early 20th century to farm in the rift valley . They were considered lower class whites relative to white British ,Irish, Scottish in Kenya . Several Kenyan Businesses still owned by descendants of whites including Afrikaans and Indians . Arabs and Persians have been at Kenya coast for over 500-1000 years and the Swahili ethnic group in Kenya is a mixture of Black Kenyan Bantus ,Arabs and Persians .

Kenya had a mutiny plot by Airforce Pilot Joseph Daniel Owino in 1964 against President Jomo Kenyatta and a second coup plot in 1971 by Airforce Fighter Pilot Fredrick Collins Omondi Oyoo with the help of Daniel Owino against Jomo Kenyatta . In 1982 Kenya Airforce officers led by Hezekiah Ochuka ,Pancras Okumu Oteyo , Ogidi Obuon ,Walter Odira Ojode ,Fenwicks Chesoli Odera Obedi, Sgt Richard Obuon,Cpl Ombok,Cpt Agola etc staged a coup rebellion against Daniel Moi . From 1982 to 1999 Kenya life expectancy dropped to 52 under Daniel Moi . Today trending towards 70 .

Uganda's President Milton Obote(Luo-Langi) was close friends with Kenya's VP Oginga Odinga (Luo-proper). Both graduates of Makerere University in Uganda participated in the formation of Kenya's Independence Party and Convinced Kenya's 3rd President Mwai Kibaki(graduate of Makerere and London School of Economics with a Ugandan Passport)to move back to Kenya from his teaching Job at Makerere and be Executive director of the Independence Party . Uganda Liberation Army exiles led by Gen Tito Okello(Luo-Acholi),Gen Oyite Ojok(Luo-Langi),Gen Bazillio Olara Okello(Luo-Acholi) supported by President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and VP Oginga Odinga launched a rebellion against Idi Amin of Uganda restoring Milton Obote in 1979 .

Only Oshay mentioned the fact that Uganda had a civil war. But it is crucial to note that since 1962, Uganda has not had a stable government and economic growth till about the 90s and the 2000s. It is a shame that the Ugandan guy on the panel only cared to make the women think that he's got money, instead of making sensible constructive comparisons between the two cities based on their histories, geographical locations and close proximities to the outside world. SMH! Intelligent people are not impressed by mere claiming words. To be honest, comparing Nairobi to Kampala is like comparing New York to Berlin. It is puerile. The fact is Berlin suffered 2 major wars combined with major economic decline which New York has never suffered. Same thing with Kampala. Since 1962, Kampala has suffered war after war, no stable governments or economic growth till recently, which Nairobi has never suffered. Nairobi is tourist driven, and has been for the longest. That is why you will find more of different races of people that have lived there pre and post colonial times. I find that Kampala after the numerous periods of political instability and economic decline, has made great strides to develop itself. Of course Uganda as a whole being located close to both Kenya and Tanzania that have been stable since independence, has benefitted a great deal in emulating the economic growth of both countries. I find it funny that it had to be Oshay, someone not from Uganda to be the one that is more knowledgeable about Uganda's past political turmoil and the general position it is in now, which is reflective of Kampala in relation to Nairobi. But that Ugandan guy on the panel was only there to try and impress the women by making puerile claims of having money! Ha ha ha. Some men seriously need to grow up.

You shouldn't overlook the security in Kampala. As a Kenyan i felt a lot safer in Kampala (Nakawa region) when I went out to a couple of clubs. Shocking to see private security guards with guns. It's a lot more rustic but and less developed but a lot more relaxed and people are super friendly and welcoming.

I am a 58 year old Ugandan born in Uganda but raised and educated mostly as an exile in Kenya. Kenya is clearly more advanced in infrastructure & sophistication and has always been. Uganda's major weakness is landlocked-ess but it makes up for it with the climate and the food and leisure industries, the amazing geography and scenery, the lower cost of living. The two sisters countries should really be one.
@colinmk256
@colinmk256 Год назад
I am Ugandan. Having had the privilege of living & working in cities like Cape Town, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Kigali and Kampala, all I can say is given Uganda's disadvantageous geographical position, for Kampala (with all its chaos) to occasionally be in the same conversations alongside "continent heavy weights" is a small promising win for Ug. I find that Nairobi and Kampala (given their broad contrasts) tend to have quite a number of baseline similarities their main difference, in my opinion, simply being geographical positioning (which has a major knock-on effect). Economically speaking, as one commenter pointed out, if you swapped the positions of both countries, we start having these same conversations and comparisons all over again in 50 years time with the keywords "Nairobi" and "Kenya" swapped for "Kampala" and "Uganda". Or even another way to view it is add another country to the east of Kenya (basically land lock Kenya) and you start to see the numbers go down there as well. Uganda is that shabby kid in the family that everyone makes fun of but still takes some liking to for some reason. Being in the center of the region, Uganda enjoys direct 1-on-1 (bar Burundi) border relations with all EA states. Kenganda, I'd actually love a video "comparing" landlocked countries on the continent. Below is a contestable claim from Chat-GPT ("economic ranking of land locked countries in Africa") "According to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) World Economic Outlook Database from October 2021, here are the top five landlocked countries in Africa ranked by GDP per capita: Botswana - $8,908 Uganda - $1,076 Zambia - $1,015 Zimbabwe - $889 Burkina Faso - $794" As a digital nomad, I loooove both countries I feel like I cannot exist without the other. I see them as one. To answer the question. Starting out coming from the Diaspora, Nairobi ticks most of the boxes as a safe landing, however, I've noticed as well a few expats that overtime end up preferring Kampala. Much love East Africa ❤ Tuko Pamoja ✊

some people are so ignorant honestly. I cant believe someone has the nerve in this day and age to wave that nonsensical gdp flag in our faces. Gdp is western bullshit that was invented to demoralize so called third world countries. Its like ranking children in a class telling them you are number 1, you are number 2, 6, 9, 17, 28 etc because you scored this on that test and that on this test. Do you seriously think all children have the same capabilities. A child can fail in math, english, geography etc yet be very gifted in other faculties. it's stupid to tell someone you are number 35 or number 67 just because they dont measure up to your standards of success. African standards of success/prosperity/progress cannot be measured with the yardstick of western ideals.

Uganda just needs to change their governance system by making sure they reduce the presidential term limit. This will give room for new ideas, new energy and also put a sitting president under pressure to want to leave a legacy knowing very well they won't be in power forever. Here in kenya for example, kibaki gave us free primary education and built us thika road as his legacy, uhuru built so many roads including the Nairobi expressway as something to be remembered for. Iam pretty sure Ruto is also working on something to be remembered for by the end of his regime. Unless Uganda follows these footsteps, you guys aren't coming out of that situation anytime soon!

But food and bevs and entertainment are cheaper in Uganda. I didn't hear the intangibles mentioned much. indeed Nairobi is a developed city compared to Kampala however in term of cost of leaving for a common person Kampala is more affordable with little money you can still survive in Kampala again when you look at the Uganda shilling is stable while Kenya shilling is depreciating at faster rate with high fuel price compared to Kampala

In my opinion about Kampala city appearance is largely based on most land being still in possession of individuals and families, yet they will not develop these places to city standard. Land policies have also played a huge role in slow progress of kampala city. Not sure how Nairobi city handles land ownership.. someone share. Been to kenyan borders next to uganda, and its mainly rural.

Hahahaha @ Joanita and Oshay's shots fired. Hahahaha @ Gilbert saying the power going out 30 times and Joanita saying at least they send alerts. That's funny. Anyways, speaking of Braeburn, I went to Braeburn International primary/high school in Nairobi when I was a kid because my parents lived in Kenya for 7 years: we lived in Gigiri, Kenya. I agree with what Khuhani said. Uganda's traffic is worse than kenya. Uganda's traffic is a parking lot and there's no traffic rules lol. I never have used public transportation in Uganda or Kenya because we always have a personal driver. But based on friends' experiences what you said about Uganda and Kenya's transportation is true. And yeah Uganda roads have too many potholes to where one has to swerve or drive in zig zag to avoid the potholes. I never experienced loadshedding in Kampala or Nairobi. However I believe what you said about loadshedding in Kampala and Nairobi. I'm not a tourist type of person. I prefer Nairobi over Kampala because Nairobi has better infrastracture and better real estate. But real estate in Uganda is more expensive in Uganda than in Kenya which surprised me because of the latter I like Gigiri because living in Gigiri felt like a vacation.

I lived in Kenya - Nairobi (Near that fancy Karen) for 4 years and ofcourse I lived in Kampala longer. I would say, it's not fair to compare Kampala with Nirobi. Kampala has a long way to go especially in transport, google maps, tech, and ofcourse classic business (especially with international trademarks) However, when it comes to social life, KAMPALA IS KING. Kampala wins in Simplicity, easy maneuver, partying, entertainment and security. (Oh yes, downtown kla is very cheap, half a $ can give you a meal for an entire day) If we talk about UGANDA Vs KENYA, its a different thing. First of all, we take it back to history...crisis, wars, etc. Uganda has hosted refugees almost on anual basis...from Rwanda, From Congo till today, Millions from South Sudan etc. and these have affected the centralisation and distribution of resources to outside Kampala areas. HOWEVER, EDUCATION IN UGANDA has been more and more competivie. Many kenyans came to study in ug (as well as Tanzanias and Rwandans) Uganda is a land locked country, almost half of Kenya but it has such a pontential. It needs just some serious fixing and it could be an African hub. DON'T FORGET UGANDA IS BETTER IN SOCCER, VOLLEBALL ETC IN THE ENTIRE EAST AFRICA. (Kenya better at running and rugby) Many stuff to compare...unlimited
