Welcome to another episode of Marathon Training in Kenya with Luis Orta! This year we bring you a ton of great new content from the Home of Champions: Iten, Kenya! In this season, we meet up with some of the huge groups that train together in Iten, joining them on long runs, medium long runs, fartleks, track workouts, easy runs, and more! We have some special guests, including Olympic medalist Paul Chelimo who was born and raised in Iten.
So what is this strange word that runners keep throwing around? A fartlek? Yes, you read it correctly. Fartlek is a Swedish word meaning “speed play.” It’s simply defined as periods of fast running mixed with slower running. This could be a mix of sprinting and jogging or even including walking for beginners.
Fartlek days in Iten are either 3-1 or 2-1, meaning 2 or 3 minutes fast, usually something like a 2:50/k pace while the slow part may be around a 3:30/k. They’ll repeat this for around 45 minutes to an hour.
Each and every one of you is invited to join us for your own Kenyan running experience! All ability levels are welcome! Please visit runningmecca.com for more info!
Thanks for watching!

_______________

Here in the US, a group training run is 5 or 6 people. In Kenya, it's 25 to 50. Yet one more reason they're better than us.

Guys, guys, I need your honest opinion! I have 2 months to a 10K road race. I'm aiming for sub 46mins finish, currently my PR is little above 50 mins. Realistically how much can I improve until the race? Male 36yrs old, 3 years of running experience, not talented, run 60k/week. Thanks in advance! :)
@downhift2325
@downhift2325 Год назад
Raise your daily mileage steadily to 10k; if you have been running for three years, then you should be able to handle it. If you push yourself, then running 4 mins faster is very possible
@kylestephens9593
@kylestephens9593 Год назад
@@downhift2325 thank you. i'll do that.
@AlexM-hm2wb
@AlexM-hm2wb Год назад
@@kylestephens9593 if you're running 60km per week I wouldn't raise it, just in operate more intervals and speed at 10 km pace or fast which is about 4:36 per km for you. I have ran a 16:53 5k on 35 km per week, it's about quality not quantity.
@kylestephens9593
@kylestephens9593 Год назад
@@AlexM-hm2wb thanks Alex
@kylestephens9593
@kylestephens9593 Год назад
@@AlexM-hm2wb funny that you said it, i was actually planning to get my weekly kms to 80-85, because i got encouraged when i consistenty hit 60k (to previously 45-50k) i improved my 10k with 1:40min. but i guess 80k/week won't shave more than another 2mins in two 2 months. i will probably end up increasing the mileage (a bit, not much) and doing fast workouts because i really want a good finish, not just to participate. low 45 would be ideal, 47 will be a B goal.
