Mau Mau veteran Njamba was Muiruri, from Lari, says that the Lari Massacre happened as a result of intemperate and derogatory comments by a boastful Chief Luka wa Kahangara against the Mau Mau. Incensed fighters came from the forest and killed him together with members of his family, thus drawing the famous bloodletting reaction from the colonialists that gives the incidence its name, Muito wa Lari, or the Lari Massacre. To evade the dragnet cast by the colonial security forces, Njame fled to Athi River but soon realised that there was no safe place for Kikuyus at that time. He was ordered to return to his homeland of Limuru. He narrates the despicable atrocities of the home guards, saying that they (Mau Mau) were prepared to deal with home guards after independence, only for Kenyatta to dissuade them from that course of action. There followed years of peaceful co-existence with the home guards but more than 60 years later, the bitterness from lost opportunities and atrocities committed by the guards still lingers. #africa #kenya #maumau #Kenyatta #africanindependence #uhurukenyatta #africanhistory #africanindependence #african
