THE INTERVIEW WITH THE LATE GEN. MAKIMEI THAT ENDED ABRUPTLY

One of the most fascinating Mau Mau war veterans that we have ever interviewed is the late Gen. Makimei. It is clear that he knew a lot, but the series of Mau Mau oaths he had taken barred him strictly from speaking about Mau Mau activities. He had had seen action in Nyandarua forest, and in Kiambu, including taking part in the attack that resulted in the infamous Lari Massacre. He believed he was betrayed by a woman and so when he saw a lady member of the Mau Mau Chronicles team, he grew increasingly suspicious. The interview did not last long thereafter. But this brief interview is still a treasure trove of Mau Mau operations, particulary in Kiambu. He spoke with deep conviction on issues of oathing and war and with immense cultural pride. He says that the Kikuyu who fought during the war were a pure and unadulterated kin unlike today's Kikuyu whose obvious disunity is the natural consequence of foreign genes that have been introduced in the community. This is his way of explaining the contemporary inexplicable irrationality and behaviour of those who used to be his people. As a true Mau Mau general, he cuts off the interview with firmness. And what begun as a great interview is gone in a jiffy. Clearly, they don't make them like this anymore. #maumau #kenya #africanliberation #africanhistory #makimei #Kikuyu

This man's story has been collaborated by several other people. We were actually led to him by several Mau Mau veterans who said that the Mau Mau story would be incomplete without interviewing him. We are glad did. His bit about Githunguri is priceless. When he died, his funeral was attended by several veterans who gave testimony to his contribution. We attended the funeral and did the following documentary.

Wonderful memory of this interviewee who looks as young as 70 years. Next time you interview a "mzee" of this age and stature, avoid having women in the team (in fact whenever you're dealing with old men keep women out of your teams) and make sure you have an elder with you. As you can discern, he may not have confidence in the younger generation whom he perhaps believes are "adulterated Kikuyu".

The approach of the interviewer is not right. It sounds pointed to produce a predetermined outcome. I wouldn't talk to him either. Why would I if he already knew the outcome of my story?

This whole movement was matters of life and death! Sometimes they can discern how some do not seem to relate well with the seriousness and solemness of the hellish ordeal. 😢 If you look at the introduction of Lucy Mukamis niece who read her eulogy during her burial you will see how losely a govt official says "sasa tuko msituni" "sasa tuna kula kiapo" Its obvious they are the offspring ones a Kikuyu song refers to as "ngui kamatimu"!!!!!!!

@maumauchronicles4296. Is this the makimei from Lari if he is the he was never may mau he was a ngati original and one of the most ruthless colonial chiefs that brutalised the people of lari

This is not Chief Makimei. In 1953, the real Chief Makimei was 52 years old. That would make him at least 120 years old today. This Makimei is not even a descendant of Senior Chief Makimei. All they share is a name.

This is the documentary Mau Mau Chronicles did on the funeral of Gen Makimei. He was an authentic Mau Mau veteran. No doubt about it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ixPtLp5RzmY.html

He was a genuine and authentic Mau Mau war veteran. All the veterans we interviewed attested to his authenticity. You have nothing to prove your claims. It is likely that you have been sent to disparage the effort and sacrifice of these Mau Mau veterans.

GMO our democratic Republic is being remotely controlled..our Africa social norms are being attacked by introduction of LGBTQ movements by foreign NGOs yet the intellectuals are quite will we fail the next generation 😢😢😢

In some areas of Kiambu, there are still unhealed wounds on this issue ,esp in Lari. This mzee and others were evicted from Karambaini inTigoni ,where some were taken to Olenguruone. This mzee may have realized he is re-opening what has taken years to partly heal.Prof.and team must have worked hard and smart to the get several stories from Lari!
