Watch acclaimed American artist Kerry James Marshall discuss his career, work and explorations of black culture.
Working across a range of media, including painting, sculpture and photography, Marshall has frequently engaged with questions of race and representation, often countering stereotypes in his portraits of black life. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1955, he has exhibited his work around the world, including a celebrated recent retrospective that travelled from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Lmao, I died laughing after Mr Marshall explained that the rope simply represented a balloon for the festival of the scene when the moderator originally assumed it represented lynching. He turned beet red. U know when u assume..... lmbooooo.

The artist, Kerry James Marshall, is clearly light years beyond anyone else in that video's frame. The moderator is incapable of understanding most of what Mr. Marshall is saying and the audience, for the most part, seems thick as a brick. But what a pleasure to listen to knowledge of craft and history and clarity of vision expressed with such precision and intellectual rigor. A true delight to hear Mr. Marshall discuss his art and his perspectives on art and the art world.

The audience and interviewer were so out of it. I appreciated how genuine Marshall was with his words, he had so much to say about history and museums that I think we often forget. He is also so appreciative of former artists and you can tell how genuine he loves creating art.

I truly wish they had an interviewer who was more interested in the artist, his history, and his work. Still very much enjoyed Kerry's stories

The audience and interviewer both seem so disconnected. I’m glad he didn’t get discouraged bc his stories are interesting.

It's unfortunate, but the academic texts that he's been featured in treat him kind of the same way. They really do a disservice to his words. I'm trying to do a research paper on him, but reading texts describing him and his work just seem so unfortunately biased in how he gets treated. Sorry this is so long.

Military Glam why do you feel that there was so much disconnection? What makes you think that? I’m asking because I really don’t understand why you are brought to your conclusion.

Kerry is truly a legend, his vast art historic knowledge and articulate, charming demeanor (even to the dumb or sour comments) just shows the depth of his practice, hard work, and hence, well-earned confidence. An inspiration to all of the younger generation of artists.

During my long career as an artist, I was privilege to meet Mr. Charles White on several occasions, however at the time he was just another brotha-artist; he was a role model for us younger wanna be younger artist, may he RIP. Now After 50 years OF EARNING A LIVING as an Artist, (11 of which was in West-Africa) I have returned to my first love, oil painting and photography. I love his work, but I doubt if he would take time to pay attention to a fellow artist who is not part of the academia! That’s just the way it is!
