My GP put me onto the ketogenic way of eating in 2016. I have MS too, was a little over weight, and my BP had gone up. The years of immunomodulating therapies I was on were hard on my kidneys. My GP was a nutritionist before studying medicine so her practice is rooted in good, sensible nutrition. She always kept up with the latest developments in terms of nutrition because of her training as a nutritionist, so the Keto way of eating made sense to her. I am also an RN, and like doctors, we were not trained well in the facts of nutrition. Anyway, I followed keto for 6 years and everything balanced out, the eGFR, proteinuria, cholesterol, and BP all improved, not to mention moving into a very healthy weight range. Last Christmas I fell off the Keto bandwagon, and yesterday I had blood tests, and took my weight because all of my clothes are a bit too snug. My kidney functions are becoming a problem again, so this has motivated me hugely. In terms of the MS, I cannot tell you how much better the brain fog is too - in fact this is why she wanted me to go on Keto, because of the MS and the emerging evidence of how anti inflammatory it is. Keto works, and is safe.

The problem is not proteins or fats. The problem is DEHYDRATION.

I did 30 days of carnivore + dairy + OMAD. I weigh 80 kilos and consume 150 grams of protein per day, about 40 grams of carbs, and the rest is fat, totaling up to 2200 calories per day. At the end of this period, I had some blood work done, and unfortunately, I’m not happy with the results. The first issue is that my BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) increased from 6.7 to 9.10 mmol/L (Range: 2.50 - 8.30). The second issue is that my LDL went from 3.77 to 5.60 mmol/L (Range: up to 3.00), while my HDL only slightly increased from 1.35 to 1.40 mmol/L (Range: over 1.45). Lastly, my calcium levels rose from 2.42 to 2.60 mmol/L (Range: 2.15 - 2.55). T3, T4, TSH, insulin, testosterone, A1C, ALT, AST, GGT, and everything else are in the normal range (as before). I’m really worried about the potential for clogged arteries. If this is supposed to be a proper human diet, how can you explain these results?

Thank you Dr. WESTMAN. I needed to hear those specific words said about CKD that Keto is safe. * Is it also safe if I do carnivore Keto with CKD stage 4 /5? I always read that CKD kidney can not clear the body of the stuff the animal protein lives in the blood since kidney can't filter correctly. So it always held me back. I started Keto on August 16th. I thought what do I have to lose. Now I have even more hope. I also am doing it for crazy diabetes . Thank you both for this show. ❤

My 87 year old Mother, only weighs 92 pounds, keto has help dementia and Alzheimer’s we took her off Alzheimer’s meds after 15 years on meds. We had to go back to more carbs for weight and she developed hypernetremia, was hospitalized. Kidneys were at risk! Our battle now is protecting her kidneys, needs weight gain, but Keto keeps her mentally clear. ,

Would LOVE to know this as well. I have a loved one that is close to being on Dialysis (Thanks to Metabolic Syndrome, HBP, T2D, etc.) and I think Keto is the only way to halt CKD or even heal it slightly. But without some real scientific results to show them, this loved one won't listen to me.

Gratitude for the knowledge DR. Eric Westman People believe that changing your diet is like winning a prize from one day to the next, Friends, a bad diet for 30 years or 40 years or 50 years or 60 years, etc., can't be resolved overnight, they spend their whole lives eating wrong and want to blame it on an ancestral diet? We must go back to what worked before, and wait for the results to see what has improved!!! It is definitely proven that meat and animal fat greatly satisfies our appetite, which means we are on the right path. *Lose weight* *Decrease in blood pressure* *Decrease in blood sugar* These are proven facts!!! Finally, wait for the time to adapt to the new diet, your body needs to learn again to burn this new food fuel, some adapt in a few days, others can take months, and others a few years, I believe that an efficient food transition is around 5 years on the diet, whether ketogenic or carnivorous I usually eat more protein, but I'm adding more fat and I intend to add 30% protein and 70% fat, today I'm eating 70% protein and 30% fat, Thank you for the extremely important content

My kidney Dr told me keto, also losing weight (with keto) is the best way to keep from having them ever again. I did have to have a kidney stone removed 3 months into keto, but he said it was in there for a long time, could be a year. When you stop Oxilates (what kidney stones are made of) your body dumps Oxilates from all over your body. In your kidney, they are called kidney stones.

Still doing well eating plant based? I am having a kidney panel done this week. I don't know if there's any problems yet or not, but what I have noticed is that I am out of this world fatigued when I eat meat. I thought the problem was digestive so I was taking high quality enzymes & HCL & that did nothing to help.

my hubby and i were on a vegan diet, we were serious as we were in our 50s, we stayed on it for 12 years, the junk vegan food was seldom, such as fries etc, Anyhow it eventually led to issues and his kidneys worsened as his blood pressure got worse, its easy on plant base to eat so many sugars unaware, especially eating any carb that is not a plant itself, be careful, the long term effect is not what you may think, I am sad for my hubby ending up on so many meds, I developed gut issues...breads, oats, fruits, beans, etc are not your friend in the long run, maybe now and then as a splurge but I have the experience to say it didn't end up like I was promised, drs were all scared of fats and we need them, sensibly. What really broke my heart was losing friends along the way who were Vegan to cancers, so much insulin and sugars as ALL carbs turn into sugars. Just a cautionary tale.

I'm not concerned with Kidney disease relating to keto but I am concerned about stones. Could Dr. Westman address this (youtube won't let me put a link, it's the meta-analysis entitled "Incidence and Characteristics of Kidney Stones in Patients on Ketogenic Diet: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" ) meta-analysis specifically or is he considering a study of the incidence among his patients? So much out there is written by folk with a strong anti-keto bias, and info from Dr. Westman would be helpful. as the meta-analysis suggests ''More studies are required to understand the risk of recurrent kidney stones with the ketogenic diet." I expect that no one has more access to a large ketogenic diet following populace than Dr. Westman. I know for many of us, other diseases present more of a specter than Kidney stones, and so it would be lovely to find a way to minimize risk AND keep on Keto.

I'm not a doctor, but my Kidney GFR is 65 at age 79 was close to 40 2 years ago..Red meat will raise creatinine and lower your GFR.. I cut red meat from my diet, and occasionally ate Fish and Chicken for proten..Also lower my protein
@a3300000

Creatinine is just a marker they use to calculate EGFR. Lowering the creatinine in you blood due to diet or reduced muscle mass doesn’t change your GFR in reality.

@Engelbert Humperdinck yes, I am aware of their utter nonsense… all of it defies intelligent review of what real science there is… I believe a lot is still unknown regarding ageing, our microbiome and our outward presentation. Gut flora are transitory for an entire sphere of stimuli … hormones (for which they are intimately responsible) emotions, external stresses of lifestyle and living habits or the lack there of. So much influences the human body there are many who forget this and try to advocate for a simple one size suits all. Lovely to connect with you again. 🌸🇦🇺

I don’t understand why I would want to go keto. My ldlc goes sky high when I consume saturated fat, my a1c is always around 4.9 (at 66yo) insulin between 3 and 6. I run 4mi/day and do CrossFit … I eat mainly plants and understood I could go keto on plants. I do consume 130g protein / day … I have added back in some fatty fish .. what benefit would I get from trying keto ? (I’m a low carb plant eater .. no processed food but do enjoy a whole grain sardine sandwich). I’m basically low carb low Sat fat.

Eventually you will develop fatty liver and gall bladder trouble. When that happens, switch to high fat keto and it will clear those up. You can always go back to plants if you want to. Once you get healed up again.

No. Keto diet is not harmful. What is harmful is sugar and carbs because they cause diabetes which is the leading cause of kidney failure. Doctors should be telling their patients to stop eating carbs to save their kidney function.
