I’ve been Keto for 5 years. I had a hemorrhagic stroke in 2016 was on a lot of meds, packed on some pounds, and felt horrible. I started looking for anti inflammatory diets. I had actually worked for WW for 10 years and found it to be unsustainable for me as it was so caloric restrictive. I couldn’t bring myself to go back to it. When I saw that keto had huge anti inflammatory benefits I decided to give it a try. Within a year I had lost my weight and regained my cognitive function. I had lost most of my eyesight in my right eye and that was completely restored. I have never personally found it to be restrictive but I agree that it has been complicated and too hostile on many levels. I’m predominantly clean keto (not perfect). My husband joined me on this a little over a year ago and is mainly low carb. He definitely has “cheat” days and eats things I would never dream of eating. He was about losing weight and I was about regaining my health. He lost all his weight on low carb. I regained my health on keto. If you are losing weight and changing your diet even a little bit you are so much better off than you were before. I hate the tribalism that has entered our space. Do what works for you.

Two years low carb, aspiring ketovore . Total weight loss of 45lbs was a pleasant surprise, but reversing type II diabetes and off metformin after first 6 months. Last A1C dipped below 5 at 4.6!! I track my macros using Cronometer daily and was always told to track total not net carbs. So after 12 months I changed to tracking total instead of net carbs and thought it would kill me (lol) .. I thought not eating bread those first few months would be impossible too. My point is that we all share similar goals and find our own ways with each other’s stories to get there. Take what you like and leave the rest including those haters!

Awesome job!!!I have a friend whose husband was severely type 2 diabetic he was maxed out on all meds he could be on, and the max doses and they said there's nothing else we can do. His cardiologist recommended the Atkins diet and within 2 years he lost so much weight, completely reversed the diabetes,he was on 0 medication and his cardiologist would actually take him around to medical conferences and seminars to talk about him as a patient and what a low carb well I don't want to call it a low carb now but what the Atkins diet did for him. He might have been a special cas,eall the genetics were just right, who knows but this was 23 years ago and he is still not diabetic and doing great.

Yeees! Thats awesome!! What was the biggest little change you noticed that was a win? Mine was crossing my legs and not worrying a sneeze or cough they'd come undone like unboxing a vacuum rolled mattress hahahaha I was diagnosed with a bunch of things back in 2000, my repro endo told me I need to do 2 things metformin and learn the Atkins diet inside out. I did that, I was doing great and then I started going to other doctors instead of her and all my other doctors started freaking out so in between pregnancies I would go back on atkins and accidentally get pregnant again. Lol finally In 2020 I decided at my highest weight ever of 249 pounds that i was gonna go back on Atkins. I got my primary care and chiro/acupuncturist in board and I have lost 131 pounds total and maintained it for a year. Got labs pulled right before I started, then every 6mths now im at every year. I got me back!!!

Thank you so much for this video. I've been eating a mixture of sustainable keto and low carb since discovering your content nearly 2 years ago and it's worked phenomenally well for me. You've been an inspiration and helped me to realize that there is no "one size" approach. You somehow manage to always be a gentle reminder of this and that we all need to figure out what works for us.

I appreciate you making this video. I am a Certified Nutrition Coach and worked with a company that was a strict low carb keto diet and many of my dieters just couldn't handle that lifestyle and guess what I told them? It's okay!!! Figure out what works for YOUR body and figure out what YOUR carb tolerance is and just stick to it. There is NO "one size fits all" with keto and those keto police type of people need a reality check because we all have different bodies and lifestyles. Good on you for making this video!!! 👍I highly recommend Amy Berger's videos who appropriately named her channel "Keto without the crazy". Perfect title. People have complicated the keto diet to death!

Great video that has so many truths in it. When I started the keto lifestyle in 2019, I didn't have all the keto influencers that are here on You Tube today. I had a bare minimum of information but I managed to lose a significant amount of weight just by keeping my total carb count to 20 grams. I am truly not even sure I was in ketosis as I didn't have a CGM or a blood monitor because I was not diabetic and didn't qualify for one. I still eat this way though I play more with the carbs now. It can be done, you just have to be flexible and know your own body and not what someone tells you is right.

I did low carb for 1yr lost 35 pounds. “Keto” for a year and lost another 50 pounds. I’m rarely in nutritional ketosis per blood test, usually around .3 ketones, but follow the rules of keto. Now I’m doing 3 days of low fat , high protein, low carb a week and the rest regular “keto” with 2 cheat days or meals a month and I’m still losing strong. I think it’s best to do low carb for awhile before keto so your body and mind gets used to the lower carbs. Just not as harsh that way.

Im pretty sure most of the food police were in the same place as all of us. Unhealthy, overweight, ill, etc. So because they were successful on THEIR journey, suddenly qualify them to start dictating how EVERYONE is supposed to travel on their journey? They are bossy, and jerks. The same attitude that people probably were to THEM when they were fat!

I always say: nothing works for everyone. I say I am Keto, but it really is more low-carb. I never could get in ketosis well. I have the beginnings of Age Related Macular Degeneration, so I had to decrease my fat intake. My labs also showed I wasn't getting enough protein, so I raised that. My main focus originally was staving off a huge family history of Type2 Diabetes. My sugars have stabilized @ 100. My A1C is Prediabetic @ 5.7. So I'm successful. I've lost 60 pounds over several years. This works for me. It is a Life Style + journey. 1 time I cheated @ a party @ work + ate burritos with regular tortillas + a very small piece of chocolate cake. 20 minutes later, My heart was throwing abnormal beats (PACs) Thankfully, I'm an RN in NICU (Baby Intensive Care) So I put myself on a heart monitor. It only lasted 15 minutes or so, but was scary. Each abnormal beat felt like 'Boom' in my chest. So I held my hand up + said, 'OK, Lord, I won't cheat again'. I do not cheat. I want to be free of Diabetes, AMD, etc. I make 90% of what I eat so I can control the ingredients. Ex: most things in sauces have vegetable oil in them. Even a steak @ a restaurant may have veg oil sprinkled on it while cooking to give it a crust. Vegetable oil is horrible for people with AMD. I have received good tips/info from people that I absorbed. I have found recipes + tweeked them. I blew off all the 'police' + critics. Good luck on your journey!

What this lady says is sensible My way is to cycle in and out of Keto. Sometimes 30g and sometimes 100g of carbs which is still below the recommended level for diabetics. I want to be a normal person not scared of carbs leading a normal life not a dogmatic fanatic. 30g are not written on tablets of stone. Maybe I'm lucky because I have a level of self control that can go from low carb one day and then cut out all carbs the next

Hubby and I are in the prepping-for-keto-by-going-low-carb-with-no-sugar-and-little-that-turns-into-sugar-in-the-body" stage. (That's my description of what we've been doing for the last six weeks because I haven't known what else to call it.) We also adopted a "no eating after 7pm" rule that ends up being a "no eating after 6pm" at least 98% of the time--and sometimes even a "not eating after 5:30pm" rule! Both of us have lost over 10 pounds so far, and it has been easier to do than we had imagined. Basically, we are just wanting to be healthier, and want to get there in a wise way. We have everything we need to check ketones, but we haven't even done that yet so you can see what I mean when I say we are still in the "prepping" stage! 😉 Your video speaks to exactly how I feel about any keto/low carb/healthier eating plan. I don't know how anyone could find fault with this philosophy. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I allowed myself to pull myself away, and it's okay if I can't finish the whole plate. I don't understand why people do these diet challenges for 30 days, give or take. Things like BBBE are not sustainable and most people do them as a challenge. When the challenge is over, what happens? Like with any diet, it ends eventually and you go back to your prior way of eating, which has an impact on your goals.
@Hertz2laugh
@Hertz2laugh 7 месяцев назад
The difference between the BBBE challenge and other challenges is that after three months of BBBE, you will have gotten over sugar addiction (if you were addicted). This means that, unlike the vast majority of other diets, after doing the BBBE three-month challenge you will not have cravings that can cause you to relapse into unhealthy eating. I did the three month BBBE challenge. For the first month and a half all I did was dream about what favorite carb-heavy meal or treat I would eat once I was done with the challenge. But, by the middle of the third month, I realized that I hadn't even thought about food at all for over a week. I went from having my thoughts constantly fixed on food to being totally free from thinking about food. It kinda' freaked my wife out. She thought that I might have become depressed because she noticed that I had stopped talking about how much I was looking forward to [meal X] or [treat Y]. After the three month challenge I looked and felt so good that I had absolutely no desire to go back to eating carbs again. I've been doing about 10g carbs max per day for over a year now. Perfectly sustainable. I even kept it up during Thanksgiving - I ate turkey and buttered greenbeans with bacon. And I had one bite of a low-carb cheesecake. Yummy. Satisfying. I feel like the only people who claim keto isn't sustainable are the people who have actually done a three-month challenge.

So, how about in comments on a video about not being rude and judgmental to those doing dirty keto, higher-carb versions of low carb, etc. we try to extend the same courtesy to others, including those who may do something like a bbb&e challenge? It is a form of elimination diet and there are many reasons for them including identifying food sensitivities, figuring out what may be causing weight loss stalls or triggering inflammation, breaking addictive eating patterns, and more. These things are meant to be done shorter-term and are not intended to be “sustainable”. That doesn’t make them pointless or failures.
@Starrbear78

I don’t normally leave comments, but I do watch most of your videos, even when I’m not doing keto, which is more times than I am, lol. I’ve been doing it on and off for three years, up-and-down the same 10 pounds. I keep trying, and I owe a lot of that to the inspiration you give.

I am in agreement with you because this concept of using Keto for weight loss is a very personal journey and everyone has a limit to how many carbs a day they can eat and still lose. It also is effected by the reason underneath as to why you can't keep losing, think insulin resistance, eating disorders (not all are just anorexia), etc.. I am like you as far as dealing with diabetes (only I am type 2 which is very misunderstood by people as only a lifestyle weakness). Wearing a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) along with Keto at 20 net carbs a day enabled me to go from a 13.7A1c to a 5.7 A1c keeping me off meds. I lost weight but after 8 weeks I increased to around 50-60 net carbs and I am doing great. I think going more strict in the beginning helped my pancreas to heal by not constantly trying to pump insulin and my body also, became more sensitive to insulin becoming more efficient. I recommend being strict for a few weeks to jump start, then increase net carbs slowly to find your burning point. Plus it's about carbs per day regardless of where they come from not necessarily specific foods. Of course many foods like breads and things contain sugar will quickly lead you to your limit. I agree Don't listen to the Keto police, it's your own journey.

I am sorry people put up rude comments on your channel. I may have mentioned this on your videos before, but I have been doing Atkins diet revolution. (which by the way in his book he calls it the ketogenic lifestyle). He says in his book that he went looking for a way to lose weight Wayback in the 50s when he was in college and he had gained weight. In his research he came across the ketogenic diet and tried it. and he lost weight so he wrote a book about it. I believe he calls it the diet revolution because you don’t count calories. I could be wrong. However, I realized that for me calories don’t count. If they did I’d be skin and bones. I have to watch the carbohydrates. The sugar, the starch, the bad carbs. Well anyway, I’ve counted carbs since I was 23 years old and I’m 75 now. It’s the only way I can keep this weight off. And if I don’t count carbs it comes back on and then I have to do his phase 1, which is meat, fish eggs, cheese and dairy for about 10 days and I’ll get back into ketosis. You are so correct that we are all different. My mother is a twin and had diabetes. Her identical twin did not have diabetes and could pretty much eat any carbs she wanted and she was around 200 pounds. My mama couldn’t eat carbs hardly at all and she weighed about 250 pounds. No matter what she ate if she didn’t leave sugar and starch carbs off her eating plan she would gain weight. Neither one ever got thin in my lifetime. So my point is even identical twins can be different. Thank you for your amazing support for all who struggle with diabetes and weight. ❤

I have been on keto for almost 2 years. I started it because I did not want to be on metformin anymore, I did not want to have a heart bypass surgery or lose one of my limbs. Since being on I have come off all blood sugar meds. I do miss certain things...I would like to do low carb, but anytime I eat carbs my blood sugar overreacts. I have learned of the insulin resistant issue... I think that is my issue. So I unfortunately don't think I can go the low carb route...😢

This is 100% me. I've been MODY type 2 since age 11. Im now 53. Developed retinopathy in my work Was on an insulin pump last 15 years and all that got me was 100 lbs overweight. I went relatively strict keto 18 months ago. Off insulin and a1c from 14 to 4.7 and down 115 lbs. No more hbp or cholesterol. I'm very sensitive to carbs and refuse to go back on insulin so this works for me. Low carb doesn't work for me personally for blood sugar control.

Each person has a different tolerance for how many carbs per day they can eat before they start gaining weight. A good general *_STARTING POINT_* is 20 total grams of carbs per day. The type of carbs do matter, but not that much. So, if you want to get your 20g carbs by eating 20g worth of pure sugar straight from a spoon, go for it. If you want to get your 20g carbs from a huge salad instead, you do you. For now, just stay under 20g per day. Do that until you get to your target weight/appearance. Once you are happy with where you are at, you can start increasing the daily carbs. Go up to 30g per day. If you don't gain weight or start feeling bad after a month, then you know your body can handle 30g per day. Repeat that process until you find the point at which you stat to gain weght again. Then you will know your personal limit. The kind of carbs you eat don't matter as much as keeping your daily carbs below your body's carb tolerance. Having said that, fructose (sugar from fruit) goes straight to your liver and can seriously f•ck you up if you over do it. This is most likely to happen if you are drinking your carbs (juices and concentrates).

So how many carbs and how many calories? I do 1350 callories and 20 carbs. I stay so tired all the time. I feel like I need more than 20.
@Hertz2laugh
@Hertz2laugh 7 месяцев назад
1350 calories? Are you four feet tall and only weigh 80lbs or something? Keto diets do not work by restricting calories. They work by keeping your insulin at normal levels for long periods of time which takes your body out of "fat storage mode" and puts it into "fat burning mode." On keto, eat when you are hungry and eat until you are comfortably stuffed. If you calorie restrict, you are massively increasing your chances of having a binge eating session. And it will increase your anxiety and might cause disordered eating. You probably feel tired because you're experiencencing sugar (carbs are sugar) withdrawals. In other words, because you're addicted to sugar, whenever you try to significantly reduce your sugar consumption, you will go through withdrawals - expect headaches, low energy, sudden and wildly intense cravings, mood instability, etc etc. It's the same thing that happens if you suddenly quit smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol or caffeine. It takes roughly four to twelve days before those symptoms wear off. But they will always go away as long as you don't give in and start taking a bunch of carbs again. No human *_needs_* to eat carbs. Unless a human has a serious disease, they will make exactly the amount of carbs they need, exactly when they need them. The process of making your own carbs is called gluconeogenesis. In other words, as long as you are eating protein, you don't *_need_* to eat carbs because your body will make exactly the amount of carbs you need out of that protein. You're an addict. Or you're a Type I diabetic. Might want to get that checked. Here are blood tests you can take to see if you are T1D: • Fasting insulin -> low = evidence of T1D • C-peptide -> low = evidence of T1D You can do other tests if your doc wants to do them, but for sure you should do the C-peptide test. If your doc doesn't know what that is or doesn't think it necessary and just wants to do a fasting glucose test, get a new doc. Low energy could also be an electrolyte imbalance. Be sure that you are salting all your meals until they taste maximally yummy (but not too salty to your taste). If you want to try electrolyte supplements, be sure to get the ones with no natural or artificial sweeteners.

I have been on keto for well over 3 1/2 years. I am 5’4’’ and usually hang out at about 127 lbs. if I use anything with magnesium or caffeine I stay in the bathroom all day. I know I’m not way over weight but still have a little fat on my tummy. I lost 41 lbs. on Atkins back in the 70’s and have kept it off. Just would like to lose 7 lbs.

thank you thank you thank you..... there are times I find it exhausting when people tie things into Keto that were never there from the get go. If I was to hear "that's not keto approved" ..... I thought my head would explode. Just recently, I had an experience, where some catty people were making digs at the gluten in wheat as the "cause" of illness..... and that it is not keto. Almost as if they thought gluten was a GMO added to wheat, instead of gluten is part of wheat....the protein part. If you like or miss bread and you have no sensitivities to gluten, by all means enjoy those recipes. Diedres Kitchen and I Don't Sugar Coat has some pretty tasty breads, rolls, hamburger buns, hot dog rolls, pizza dough etc etc etc. Whatever works to create sustainability and keep a person in a state of ketosis (if that is what they are trying to achieve), go for it.🎉❤

Keto means you claim to be in a state of Ketosis, which means burning fat or Fat Adaptation; and the only way to determine that is to measure your state of Ketosis, which you can do by the smell of ketones in your urine, but urine, blood, and breath measurements detect different Ketones whose relative amounts change depending on your body's state of Keto Adaptation, meaning burning Ketones. Fasting, Low Carb, and Carnivore are descriptive lifestyles that contribute to, first, Fat Adaptation, then Keto Adaptation, which is the ancestral mode of human metabolism.
@SouthernKristi
@SouthernKristi 7 месяцев назад
Thank you so much for that information! Very nice!
@iroulis
@iroulis 7 месяцев назад
It's important to note that different at-home ketone measurement schemes measure different ketones. Urine strips measure Acetoacetic Acid (AcAc). Blood fingersticks measure Beta Hydroxybuterate (BHB). Ketone breathalyzers measure Acetone. When you're starting a low carb lifestyle and become Fat Adapted, you produce all three ketones and can measure them. After a while, when you become Keto Adapted, you also burn ketones. The ketones you burn are AcAc and BHB, but not Acetone. Your measured AcAc and BHB will go down, but your Acetone will stay high. This AM, my BHB=0.4 mmol/L and my Acetone=27 on a Biosense breathalyzer. Supposedly, if I'm not burning BHB, a breath Acetone=27 on the Biosense breathalyzer should equal BHB=0.9-2.7 mmol/L which is higher than the 0.4 measured. For completeness, my Glucose=92 mg/dL to calculate Glucose/Ketone Index (GKI) that gives me different numbers depending on which ketone measurement I use.
