I did a strict ketogenic from January until last month. I cut sugar all processed food and kept my carbs low. Back story, I train and compete in jiu jitsu. I also do strength and conditioning on top of my jiu jitsu training. I felt the best I’ve ever felt. I went and had my yearly check up, the doctor told me my cholesterol was dangerously high and put me on statins. I stopped keto, I feel like shit. I can’t train as much as I use to ,because I get so sore. I have no sex drive. And I went back to having brain fog. So I went back to my Dr he told me I need to stay on the statins and limit my activity. I told him to fuck off. That’s my story.

Very timely- I'm a 60 year old male I've been on paleo since 2005 and Keto since 2015 and my cholesterol has been gradually getting higher from 5.2 in 2015 to 7.2, I exercise and lift weights. So my doctor insisted I started Statins and I refused. He then insists on a CT Angiogram and Carotid Arteries ultrasounds both sides of the neck. When the test results came out he called me totally shocked and told me I had '0'zero % plaque or calcium deposits ! He put it down to my diet and exercise! My testosterone levels were 40% over the norm !!

I'm curious. Was that your total cholesterol that was gradually getting high? What was your LDL and HDL cholesterol? What was your triglycerides? You can divide triglycerides with your HDL and as long as the amount is 3.0 and below (some studies argue the cutoff is 3.8), it indicates that your LDL is large, fluffy particles (rather than the small, dense ones which are indicative of an inflammatory issue). The total needs to be multiplied by 2.3 if you're in Canada. You can also divide total cholesterol with HDL, and it result should be below 3 or 3.5. But Triglycerides to HDL is the better ratio to use.

i went to weight watcher for years. I just did not lose on it. They said I was not eating enough so I ate more. Gained weight. Said to eat less so I did. Didn't lose anything. Went on the keto plan and have lost 23 pounds so far and will not go back. My blood levels are now below pre diabetes levels so I think diets with higher carb food are just bad for some people. Since most diets have the dieter gain back the weight, these diet plans are just raking in the money. Meat and vegetables are working for me.

@@seeforu57 Simple. Stop ALL sugar and carbs including bread, rice or anything with carbs in it. About 4 weeks after I began that regimen I switched over to 100% meat with lots of fat. You'll need to get some magnesium, zinc and potassium to supplement because as your body uses up the fat it needs electrolytes. I had to take mega doses. It won't take long for you to see the benefits. Sleep, energy, mental clarity. A year later and I have to say that was the best thing I ever did for myself. Fasting blood glucose 79 I often only eat one meal per day simply because I'm not hungry vs eating 4 to 5 times per day before.

As a cardiovascular nurse who has worked in non-invasive and interventional cardiology, as well as vascular surgery, I like to hear about the science of it all. My mom has lost 30 lbs on Keto. Her fasting BS levels have went down but her LDL is higher than ever. I keep going back and forth on the changes to her lipid panel. She is off her statin, which I’m very happy about due to Alzheimer’s disease on both sides of our family. I’ve been a huge advocate for the American Heart Association over the last 13 years in my field. Now I don’t know what to think about that organization. Thank you for posting videos such as this one. Dr Hallberg's passion for his cause is incredible. I am a total fan. As a fitness trainer in Europe, I sincerely hope the LCHF filters through into mainstream medicine here for type II, it seems we are slow to catch up, with more and more of the ageing population being diagnosed with diabetes type 2. Guidelines for a documentary televised in the UK only last week recommended a liquid diet with recommendation (in the pdf linked to the programme), stating 'as long as it is low calorie, look for a meal replacement option and do not (!) be concerned wth the sugar content. So misleading and confusing for those who have been given incorrect advice on how to reverse this still increasing epidmic. Keep up the great work Dr Hallberg, love your succinct delivery of information... LCHF fan and promoter!!!

denis donbas You’re entitled to your opinion. I know from personal experience that the Ketogenic Lifestyle not only reversed my Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis (and that of my youngest son) but also has helped me KILL my Stage 3 Breast Cancer with Metastases. Some veggies are great while others convert into glucose. Cancer feeds and grows on glucose...but literally starve to death when only ketones are available to the brain and other organs.

The little bit of talk about keto and heart disease doesn't start until at 24:54 and doesn't last very long - actually there isn't a lot of talk about it during the entire interview. Lot of talk about diabetes testing and diabetes, different medicines and how other institutions make studies. I sat through this whole interview waiting for the actual information about the precise studies about keto and heart health - and I'm still waiting.

Glad she mentioned Nina Tiecholz. Haven’t listened all the way through yet but if you want more education on this topic, look up Dr. Jason Fung, a nephrologist from Toronto who talks about keto and fasting and the reduction of insulin levels in the blood. He explains how diabetes is a hormonal disease that can be reversed or cured through diet.

I can attest to the emotional glucose response. After being keto and intermittent fasting for 3years and reversing type 2 all my numbers normalized. April May and June 2018 were very emotionally draining for me and that’s when I started to see glucose numbers rise even after fasting for 24hrs. Sometimes, it’s not diet but a emotional/stress response.

High Intensity Health to be honest with you I don’t do Keto as strictly as others do. No testing if I’m in Ketosis or sticking to a hardcore guideline for ketogenics...but I do stick to low to no process carbs. I love chicken, and to sacrifice bad carbs, I make it a rule that any way a chicken is prepared is fair game lol...so, then I added Intermittent fasting and Apple Cider Vinegar, with this combination I loss 65lbs. My cholesterol good and bad were down to normal or below, blood pressure from 150 plus to 120 plus...kidney was over 61-65 I think lol...all my numbers exceeded the positive goals I’d set last November:)

Magic Mike I’ve been Keto for 8 weeks and about half way through I seemed to have lost the desire for sweets. I use an app to log my intake but no test strips either. My energy level is great, I hit a stall for 4 weeks on the scale but my body was saying woohoo inches are falling off. I don’t find it hard because I’ve always cooked with high fat it’s just the carbs that were making me fat. I’m very happy

Just found this interview - so informative. I get grass-fed ground beef with liver and heart mixed in. Delicious! Only a bit more a pound from U.S. Wellness Meats than just ground beef alone at my local Sprouts. Aldi's has grass-feed NY strip steaks for $10 per pound, half what it costs in other stores. The name of the farm is on the package so you can check it out. I practice IF and do mostly OMAD in the late afternoon. This carries me through to the next day. I'm back to my college weight. I'm so happy to know low-carb lifestyle is now going mainstream among medical community. It totally changed my life for the better.

Annie Low good news you are off insulin. Congratulations. I believe if you continue keto/intermittent fasting regime things will gradually start to get even better and one day you will be free of metformin. Metformin is not too bad ...so if you gradually reduce the dose under medical supervision you are going in the right direction. If you extend your fasts to one meal a day or alternate day fasting periodically this will turbo charge once you are less dependent of metformin..the effect..

Annie Low I haven't spoken to many friends and family. Even with evidence in front of their faces 8-9/10 people will live in denile can stick with the conventional wisdom or stupidity. But for the few that I have tried and help and hold their hand through this process. It's been transformational..I totally new body new life new outlook. Mind you the people I have helped have only had either weight issues, elevated cholesterol or insulin resistance with if you have any belly visceral fat means you are likely to be..they themselves become so enthusiastic about the progress to and try and help other friends and family. But it's really swimming against the tide. You can only help those that recognise they need help and what they been previously doing..maybe for years doesn't work and will never work...Cheers Best of luck.

+You just don't know how tempted I am to put flyers on cars outside dialysis centres to inform family members to start their kidney patients on LCHFDs. I have had 6 stents put in so far. I have had 2 toes amputated and not 1 doctor or nurse or even a Dietitian had told me to not eat sugar or high card diet. My amputation too MONTHS to heal. Recently I had another diabetic ulcer stemming from that amputation. It healed in 2 weeks. My family members don't want to listen, so who am I to expect friends will? Say, can we meet and perhaps start a centre ourselves? If we can help just 1 person, maybe it will snow ball?

Alan, I can only tell you what my personal experience was. First, I come from a family with heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol. When, I was younger, about 27, I tried keto, I got very sick after a week and the diet pushed up my blood pressure as a result. I have been on blood pressure pills since that time. I had a friend, who also became sick and actually went to the ER due to the diet. Going keto in the 1980's, was more of the Atkins diet, with not a lot of vegetables. Also, People are made up differently. I did lose weight on that keto trial, but the fat was too much for my body, and I paid a price. My body does not process fat well, which was actually confirmed later on by my cardiologist. So years later, I am at age 61. From age 27 to 60, I ate a regular diet but started to gain weight about 20 pounds overweight. I tried every diet to lose weight since then, even tried a fish keto diet, but could not lose weight. One day, I started to get chest pains when walking, went to the docs and I found out my main heart artery was 85% percent blocked and have what they call the widow maker. They wanted to put a stent in immediately but I said no. Scared, I read everything and watched a lot of youtube video's, Dr Mcdougall, and Esselstyn and others. I then went totally plant/pasta based, no fish, oil, milk, or meat. (ok, I do cheat sometimes, a little parmesian cheese on my spagetti, and skim milk in my coffee, I am human) I lost 25 pounds, feel so much better, I can actually walk now, with no chest pain and avoided getting a stent in my heart. I think for me and others with family history, steer clear of any fat period. If your young, have no history of heart disease in your family or for yourself, you could probably do it as it seems to work for many. Good Luck!

I had heart disease at 35 yrs old and ate a high protein low carb diet for years and stayed pretty fit, I went whole food plant based and in a weeks time my chest pains left, and blood pressure dropped. Grains and starches have driven the worlds most powerful societies for thousands of years. I’m not saying Keto doesn’t work, but look at the cultures with the least cancer rates, heart disease, and obesity and study what they eat.

I agree with Appleblade. Eating rice, potatoes and fruits have also seen improvements in diabetes and overall wellbeing. It all depends on the starting point and other lifestyle factors like whether a person exercises, sleeps well etc. If one eats rice, fruit (vegan) but also eats candy, processed and junk = bad. If one eats keto but includes poor quality meat with too much fat, insufficient veggies and with occasional 'fall off the wagon' refined carb binges = bad. I think the answer to health is not just keto per se. It is real food and yes, even if that is ample real carbs and fruits. It is the combining which seems to be detrimental. I would also add that there could be an element of your genetics at play too. People who are from closer the Equator, seem to tolerate carbs better than folks further away. Seasonal eating is another factor. Keto all year? Probably not optimal IMHO.

I don't think the numbers would be improved, or that I would be healthier on a vegan diet. A vegetarian diet would probably be good, but I wouldn't feel safe on a vegan diet. denis donbas it's really going on rather too well. Human biology is complex and I can't claim that what works for me is good for everyone. Carbs other than few complex ones have been absolutely devastating for me. More carbs=more insulin, exogenous or otherwise and a sure death spiral.

@Marcus Shaw it's perhaps true, but varies from person to person. That said, keto is not about consuming protein, more about getting the bulk of one's food intake in fats.

How can anything concrete be applied to how a Ketogenic diet effects the population, when each individual starting point varies too greatly? How can we be generalizing about how the keto diet effects a wide range of people when it is not fully understood yet? Even though it was used for control of epilepsy in children many decades ago, we live in a different world now with different health parameters. Aside from any recent studies, banket statements about keto are mostly opinion at this point, aren't they?

Changed to Keto back in April of this year and dropped now over 35lbs! Getting away from carbs and sugar was hard to start but once out of my system the need went away! Also I can fast two days per week without any feeling of need to eat, feel better than ever, have dropped two out of three meds that were prescribed!

Interesting interview. I subscribe to a plant based diet and am happy. I am also open minded. You hear the same successes with type 2 on plant based. The body is a great machine. Drs shout continue to share and learn from each other instead of digging their heels into one camp or the other. I think both sides are after the same goal, better health.

You talked about measurements of blood glucose and blood pressure and co. I bought recently a fitness tracker, that measures lots of stuff, including heart rate, sleep quality, blood pressure and this thing even measures ECG/PPG. (the accuracy of blood pressure measurements can be adjusted) Have you any experiences with such trackers ?

More likely it was a liver dump of glucose not protein being converted. I'm shocked a non-diabetic could have a spike that high from stress. As a type 1 using a cgm I see these stress spikes happen but want aware non-diabetics could have spikes like this.

I have diabetes in my family. I am pre-disposed, because I likely have a gene that makes me that way. Many people are like that. It took me until my mid-to-late 40s before I started showing signs of it. I was borderline diabetic twice, actually one number from the clinical definition (but just one test, it takes two consecutive), before I started controlling carb intake. Got it under control, then backslid for a while and was inching back up to that borderline level again. Then I went Keto and now my A1C is in the normal range. However, if I go back to eating more carbs, it will start increasing again. Basically when you are on Keto, you are eating as if you are a diagnosed diabetic, even if you aren't. But that is not the same as "cured". I also have a problem with people saying anything cures diabetes. I have not seen any data that shows that. LCHF and possibly even a well-designed high-carb diet can mitigate the disease and keep you under the threshold of diagnosis, but the underlying insulin-resistance is still there.

I always love hearing about the progress of Keto and related studies! Has there been much research into the "keto rash" or "low carb rash" outside of the old Korean low carb study that noted it? It seems to be a popular topic without much resolve for those who suffer from it. Increasing carbs seems to be the typical course, outside of those who have taken some sort of antibiotics to fend it off (not all successfully). There have been recommendations of bile salts, and increasing vegetable consumption, etc. but the videos recommending that are flooded with comments how it didn't help. Is it an immune response perhaps due to histamines or keytone bodies? Cheers!

Perhaps it's due to increased milk products intake? Some people can tolerate small amounts of milk products in their diets, but when they increase the intake the casein will often give them a rash. It's especially severe for people who are allergic to casein, oftentimes they will develop atopic dermatitis as a result of their body treating casein as a dangerous intruder. The only solution then is to lower or cut out your (especially soft) milk products. Some hard well aged cheese may be tolerated, but oftentimes the flare ups make the sensitivities even more... sensitive.

I had the keto rash too and speculated it was due to too high ketones. I switched to a whole foods carbohydrate diet as a temporary resort and it went away. I've since switched back to keto but made a few modifications to it: less cruciferous vegetables (they used to be the bulk of my carbs) several egg yolks every day (2-5), a little more monounsaturated fats (olives and avocado) and also some medicinal mushrooms like reishi. No rash and the troubles that I had with constipation also disappeared.

I had a keto rash all over my neck for a week and then heard someone say to use oregano oil to heal it. I did mix 3 drops of oregano with shampoo in my hand and put it on the spots for a few minutes. After a 3 days of doing that the spots disappeared! about 7 weeks later I got a small rash spot on the back of my neck and I did use oregano for a couple of days and it again disappeared. I don't know what the connection is but I thought I would share!

at around 28 minutes you mentioned "Good Fats" what are the good fats that I should be focusing on. I've been a type 2 diabetic for over 30 years, had a silent heart attack 1-2 years ago and finally had a stent placed in my heart. I've lost between 20-25 pounds and off of my diabetes meds. However, I notice my sugar levels going up even though I'm at around 25 carb grams a day. Also, since I've had a heart attack I guess I need reassurance that eating bacon, egg yolks that sort of thing won't cause another heart attack or stroke. TIA for your advice.

Hi. Are there any long term studies (like a minimum of 10 years) that include a large group of people (like minimum of 1,000) showing that eating Keto will reverse heart disease? I know that some people have had success with diabetes reversal, but it makes sense to me because a major food group is being cut back a lot. So that doesn’t impress me as much as a long term study would. I am genuinely interested in knowing whether eating Keto will reverse heart disease. Thanks.

There is not, that I know of. Perhaps some in epileptic children. But, as with most other favorable diet and lifestyle changes, it's unlikely that these shorter-term benefits will suddenly be harmful down the line. Cheers, Mike
