"Kevdak" Ep 52 SPOILERS Critical Role Animatic

This is a tribute to Critical Role, the show where nerdy voice actors get together to play D&D. This is my new fan animatic inspired by the bloody events played out in episode 52: "The Kill Box"
Be warned, this one is both spoilery and gory. Had to do justice to Travis Willingham's poetic descriptive skills!
I'm glad to announce that the stars and planets have aligned. I've FINALLY finished this animatic I've been working on for so long!!! I've had this idea of doing Matthew Mercers (Dungeon Master of Critical Role) iconic phrase, and then I just had to do it~ Not to mention this one is one of my favorite episodes so far!
I didn't learn from my past mistakes and made the drawings here quite elaborate. For that I've paid and took too long on it. I REALLY need/want to lower the quality, and pull through more content.
I apologize to those hoping to see "Close Call: Part 2", I've been itching to do this one for a while. But now that I've been satisfied, my first order of animatic business is to finish Part 2 once and for all!

Can we actually appreciate the fact this legend of animator actually respected the narrative and did exactly what Grog did to Kevdak? Animation ain't easy, there is some mastery on this. Maybe you have a job as an animator already, I just only hope some major network calls you to run your own show.

It would be pretty insulting to the original show to intentionally ignore the direction. It would actually be harder to go based off their own vision.

@@bigdaddynero I mean, sometimes animators can get really lazy with some jobs. Just imagine doing the scene of the killing of Kevdak frame by frame. It is an insane amount of work. However, he managed to keep the few frames fluid and he underlined every single moment of the description with every single frame he drew. You know this guy is up to his shit. You should see the work of Richard Evans. There is an animation he did for this unreleased movie "The thief and the Cobbler": HE ANIMATED A FULL DECK OF CARDS. How in the fuck does someone manage that.

Me too :) It's a neat factor for sure. I also love how he described how Grog was gonna kill Kevdak as he came diving down thanks to his combo with Vex. And Matt knocked it out of the part describing how it was.

Yeah, at this point it's kinda impossible to instakill Grog, also someone else in the comments points out that this is the last time Grog ever got knocked unconscious till episode 115 when the pulled a card from the deck of many things.

Can't help but appreciate how accurate this was compared to how the show went with the visuals. Very nice. I'm glad they didn't have Kevdak look to flee in the show. His death felt like much more of an occasion with how it was handled.

Something I generally noticed in LoVM: because "hit points" are not a thing that makes sense in that context, the fatal blow has to believably take the opponent straight from "not particularly injured (therefore absolutely able to keep fighting)" to "dead." By extension, retreat doesn't make sense nearly as often. The only way to visually present "down to 5HP out of 200" would be "barely able to stand upright," and then finishing him off is just not heroic.

This was beautiful years ago, and still holds up. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if they showed the animators this as a reference shot for the animated version given the major scene's similarity in execution (lol pun intended). Perfection. Thank you!

This is still one of my favorite scenes. The beauty of how it shaped the story afterwards was remarkable. One of those rare moments where Matt gave a little insight into how things would play out differently when he pointed out that if Grog didn't land the finishing blow thing would have gotten pretty messy.

Really this fight would have gone extremely differently if Scanlan hadn't weakened Kevdak enough to keep a Hold Person spell on him and Greenbeard. Especially when you consider what Greenbeard's strategy was going to be.

Not to mention if Vex hadn't gotten him out using the pokeball grog would have taken attacks from all the nearby goliaths and certainly died, she even had to take something like 4 attacks of opportunities and almost died herself

It’s definitely one of mine as well. The only fight I feel gets close is the fight with vecna, and that’s a fight with a literal god. Raishan’s gets pretty close too, but there was so much build up to that fight that it couldn’t have been anything but good.

All of this fight was perfect. I remember Sam asking Travis like wait... arent you on deaths door? and Travis nodded but I feel like he played that so perfectly. Grog would absolutely not care if he was almost dead and would take his chances to take Kevdak down right there. So awesome!

This is a legendary kill. Has to be one of the best in DnD history. It had it all, a raging battle, the despiration of one final desperate act, creativity to set up the killing blow, narrative and dialogue synergies, and lets not forget POETIC JUSTICE! The beginning of this is my favorite part! Picturing the characters at the table instead of the actors is the best! I love all the expressions and just the insanity. It's so good!
