Kevin Matthews interviews Bill Hicks at the Funny Firm in Chicago. Bill talks about his early years in stand-up, and some of his worst gigs. Circa 1990
Thanks to Bill, anytime I want to accurately remember my dad's laugh all I have to do is listen to a bill Hicks set and I can always hear my dad howling with laughter. Imo Making someone laugh is one of the greatest gifts or talent you can have.
Totally Agree. Some comics don't age very well due to their subject matter being set in a time frame, but Bill was ahead of his time and saw the writing on the wall.
Lol i love when he's talking about 'It would've been apart of the festivities, remember when Tommy threw up and then we killed that guy and then Earl couldnt find his hat, huh huh' hahaha!
Go on globaltruthproject . com and read “The Present” to see the truth about life and death, which can change the world from page one. Nothing is more important than reading it.
Feels less like he was taken, and more like while he was here he was waiting in line to check out, wasn't exactly the epitome of health, and was a walking chimney.
@@GrimSleepy He saw the mediocre and mundane be revered and idolized by the blind masses and it hurt him deeply; it convinced him life here was on a death spiral to somewhere he didn't wanna be. I share his pessimism; but yeah, he could've smoked a bit less, maybe 4 or 5 cigs a day instead of two or three packs and cancer wouldn't have come so soon.
First time I saw Bill Hicks was on the Dangerfield special back in the 80's. He was just great, and he stuck in my mind for a long time. Next thing I know, he's dead. Always the good ones go, always...dammit!
The Dangerfield show was in 89, I saw it too. I gad only seen hicks 3 times on tv. I was living in LA and drove past the laugh factory and in front it said rest in peace John candy and bill hicks. Bill wasn't famous, only in the UK he was.
Oh so he burned out from stand-up and then took over a different person's social security number, adopted Jones' family members as his own, changed his facial features, changed his voice, and then went insane. That makes perfect sense.
It's called genetics dude, people look like other people, we're a rather non-diverse species. And is it all that uncommon to say he lies about his age? Women do it all the time. The denial on the other hand, is being done solely by you. Because you're denying any semblance of reality
Nice video upload thanks for sharing it and I had never heard about people that want a comedy show at 6:30 am in the morning just before they go to work... well alright we are all having different views on life I guess... I love Bill Hicks and love those that loved and love him too. Nice season greetings from the 4th
Nothing beats hearing "worst gig ever stories". Im a gigging musician and nothing is more entertaining than those stories! PLAY FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART!!!
I was born William Melvin Hicks on December 16, 1961 in Valdosta, Georgia. Ugh. Melvin Hicks from Georgia. Yee Har! I already had gotten off to life on the wrong foot. I was always "awake," I guess you'd say. Some part of me clamoring for new insights and new ways to make the world a better place. All of this came out years down the line, in my multitude of creative interests that are the tools I now bring to the Party. Writing, acting, music, comedy. A deep love of literature and books. Thank God for all the artists who've helped me. I'd read these words and off I went - dreaming my own imaginative dreams. Exercising them at will, eventually to form bands, comedy, more bands, movies, anything creative. This is the coin of the realm I use in my words - Vision. On June 16, 1993 I was diagnosed with having "liver cancer that had spread from the pancreas." One of life's weirdest and worst jokes imaginable. I'd been making such progress recently in my attitude, my career and realizing my dreams that it just stood me on my head for a while. "Why me!?" I would cry out, and "Why now!?" Well, I know now there may never be any answers to those particular questions, but maybe in telling a little about myself, we can find some other answers to other questions. That might help our way down our own particular paths, towards realizing my dream of New Hope and New Happiness. Amen. I left in love, in laughter, and in truth and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit.
The first time that I saw Bill, it was at Stratford HS. SOMEONE uploaded an interview to youtube, and it brought tears to my eyes, at it captured Bill (weed and all) at poolside. Then was pulled. So very sad.
The face of John Denver and Alex Jones combined. And the host, whose face we never actually see clearly, bears a striking profile resemblance to a very young Tackleberry from Police Academy.
for those of you not from the Chicago area, Kevin Matthews had one of the funniest radio shows . He could do great imitations. Had great bits. One was having either a wife or husband call up their spouse to leave work and come home to have sex in the middle of the day. Always funny.
Seeing him talk now makes it even more obvious. He had the same fast, snappy sense of humor modern comedians have now in 2019. He was so ahead of his time.
The greats always die young man and it sucks balls, truly a legend in the history of comedy. He tried to change the world, but they wouldn't listen. But they are now
Oh, it's been dead for a long time. It still reminds me of a very fun time in my life. I loved the comedy boom - going to Zanies, the Improv, Funny Firm and small clubs dotted around the Chicago area.
Sounds about right. I can't imagine Bill being the guy with a wardrobe full of clothes. Probably only had a few t-shirts and the good 'ole leather. He was one of the best.
Well godammit. I've always wondered why no big famous comedians come to where I live. I live in baton rouge Louisiana. Lol. They prolly heard this story.
@@MStone-ol5bg, wake up bro... Geez Budge, get a load of this guy, can't even see you cloned your consciousness into an avatar of fudge... I do applaud you, though. Also, I believe he was calling Maynard a wannabe-Hicks... P.S. I'd assume that the psychedelics they consumed could contribute as well.
I was at the show in Chicago when he had his meltdown on some yuppie couple. It was absolutely amazing, and it was at that moment I realized Bill was one of the greatest comedians ever. Miss this dude a ton.
@@LicoriceLain agreed. And people are a thousand times worse now than they were when Bill was still around. It's why I find myself becoming more of a misanthrope day by day.
Walnut Creek huh? My dad used to go to the Punchline out there. It later closed and then became a music venue, where a lot of us hung out in the 2000s. No idea what's there now.
Anyone know what Kevin Matthews is doing these days? He was hilarious back when he was doing shows on WLS/WCKG. Last I heard he was doing some collab with WGN but I don't see him on their website anywhere.
