I really genuinely appreciate his integrity on this. He wouldn't even make a deal with Harvey as a silent partner on it because HE would know about it. I love that Kevin has decided to wait it out and do the RIGHT thing on this rather than do something that would help Harvey benefit in some way.
I hate he feels bad about the movies that human trashes attached to. If he don't condone it now...fair to say he wouldn't have then. It's not like he turned a blind eye to something despicable going on to get his movies made. He had no clue. By all means be passed and outrage, but at least in my mind kevin smith shares no blame so he shouldn't feel bad about being attached to that human stain.
@@jacobpowell2318 this is why we love him (well my family loves him) cause he is an awesome dude. While on one hand the monster did make his dream came true, the other hand, the man is a very bad monster.
@@jacobpowell2318 It's heartbreaking. He used to sing the Weinstein's praises on the commentary tracks for helping him get his films out, but then all the ugliness was revealed. I can't imagine the gut punch that must've been for him.
Ha, he has "integrity" now but not all the years he was getting signed deals to make movies through his company and even putting jokes in them about exactly what he knew was going on with the man, and all of Hollywood.
@@camerachris Can't blame him. People didn't come forward about Harvey until there was a bigger group to back everyone up. That's how it goes. It sucks, but it's reality. Speaking out about it was career suicide, until it wasn't. Can't make effective change when you have no resources. You can't make references to something you know is fucked up or call it out in your films when you don't have access to that platform any longer. He also wasn't the only one to do so. The references to Harvey's behavior came from multiple pieces of media, and added credibility to the victim's claims once they started pouring out.
"Tell someone you're a Metatron and they stare at you blankly, but mention something from a Charleton Heston movie, and suddenly everyone is a theology scholar. May I continue?"
Me too! It was literally one of the few things my ex & I fought over in the divorce. I won. He made WAY more money, so I told him he could afford to buy another copy. 😂 (TBF, I'm the one that introduced him to Kevin Smith and the View-Askewniverse. But he was Catholic and I'm not.)
Somebody should organize a kickstarter to get Dogma back. And by that I mean pay somebody in jail to start kicking Harvey until he agrees to sell the movie back cheap.
Harvey isn’t giving up the movie but it’s totally worthless without Kevin involved…and he pretty much wants nothing to do with Weinstein. You can tell he felt dirty even offering him $$ to buy the movie back. Odds are, we’ll see all of Kevin’s movies bundled on Paramount Plus or Criterion Collection, and maybe they’ll even include all the commentaries.
Harvey has a brother Bob. Kevin will never get his movie back. Unless..... Someone wins the lottery, approaches the Weinstein company, drops the bucks and makes a deal with Kevin under the table to slowly drop percentages back to Kevin. Or Kevin could just go full Tator Swift and remake all his movies thru a "modern prism" (change enough to make it his and not get sued), to bring it back to himself. Just my drunk assed opinion, I had too much to drink, I need to lay down.
or... Weinstein could continue to be a dick and order all the masters of that movie to be destroyed so the only thing we could hope for is a decent quality recording on a pirate server somewhere. Or a copy of a dvd/blueray in good condition.
i found a collectors box set of Dogma at a pawn shop in Alaska....paid 2 buckd for it. On a whim, i looked it up online and this particular set was going for $90....this was 10 years ago. Hands down, my favorite Kevin Smith movie ❤
I had a similar experience. Last summer I found it at a media sale being held by the local library and paid a whopping FIFTY CENTS for it. I'll tell you, when I spotted it I could not snatch it off the shelf fast enough. It's the 2-disc special edition, too. I found an (almost literal) holy grail lol.
@@NightAtTheOpera3 yes!! my partner thought id lost my damned mind right there in the pawn shop lol We were talking about clearing out our vast dvd collection last week, and first words out of my mouth were "Dont even think about getting rid of Dogma"...he said "I wouldnt, i enjoy living too much"😝
I have to - politely - disagree. :) I loved the movie in my 20s, mostly because of the topic and because it was one of very few movies which made fun of religion, back then. (and Life of Brian, and that‘s pretty much it, for the "list") Watched it a few weeks ago. It‘s just SO. MUCH. EXPOSITION…. :) I prefer Clerks.
@@Zett76 Can't argue with ya there...my fondness for it is just nolstalgia, as it was the first "not for kids" movie that made me feel less like a loser for not being successful at the whole church/god thing.
File with the courts a brief that explains how HW is evading paying full value of judgements to victims by denying the sale of assets. Let a judge force the sale of all of his IP assets at auction. Then KS can step in and pick it up for a reasonable price.
Can’t. Judge James Burke was removed from the bench by NYC Mayor Adams’ chief of staff who is on the board that appoints the city’s judges. Apparently the chief of staff was close friends with Weinstein’s defense attorney and didn’t like the Judge’s behavior during the trial. I’m not familiar with NYC’s judicial system and don’t know if his old cases were transferred to another judge. Judge Burke was on the bench for 20 years before he was fired.
@@dr.floridamanphdThis is not correct. They 100% could do it. Judges do not 'own' a case, especially a settled case. They could file with the district, and a judge appointed to that district can make a ruling on the complaint related to denial of assets.
@@0MohawkWarrior0 judges are assigned to cases and, unless otherwise removed from it, technically “own” the case pretty much in perpetuity. Now that Judge Burke has been removed, and Weinstein’s conviction on one charge is currently under appeal, and the other charge being under a motion to dismiss for being beyond the statute of limitations, it’s unclear who the next trial judge would be if one or both of those charges ends up being remanded for a new trial and would be the one enforcing Weinstein’s payments to his victims. But what do I know? I’m just that weird guy who makes friends with lawyers to learn about these things.
I know a lot of people are kind "tired" of Kevin Smith and his talks, but it's a great speaker and a great storyteller. I saw him speak at a college years and years ago and he's just one of those people who can hold an audience's attention for 2 hours straight and you never feel bored listening to him.
Absolute insanity; that Harvey Weinstein owns such a great Kevin Smith movie! I watched that so much early 2000’s… such a great movie! Absolutely crazy!
Why is it insanity? Were it not the scumbag Weinstein, would you object? Kevin sold the rights, he was paid. There is no argument that it was a fraudulent contract or under duress. It sucks but what system would you create.
glad he mentioned it is on RU-vid. Hopefull it stays here until it is able to be re-released so we can at least watch it somewhere. Or I have to dig in the attic for my dvds.
Whenever You get it back Kevin, put it back out in a theatrical run and I will buy so many tickets!!!! Then whatever You do with it after that I am so excited to see!!! 😅
I think it been here a year or more so far, I think that's when I ripped from here. Maybe since its not available commercially, RU-vid wont remove it without a direct complaint from Weinstein.
while that is correct, what Kevin means by "Harvey owns dogma" is not only does he own the film that was shot in 1998 but all other SQL and licensing rights. So Kevin can't even approach making a sequel until Harvey lets go of it. So it's more intertwined than it's simply not being available on DVD or streaming etc. Harvey essentially has that entire film and the universe there within by the balls
@@RiggsBF yeah luckily for people that want to see it this doesnt really impact it. digitally it survives, its just for the rights to make a sequel or to get a licensed dvd it is not quite as easy.
Well, there's one way we can do this. We take it back. Then Kevin can say, "see how much you already lost out, these cats are pirating it like crazy because you didn't want to go for the 500k."
I saw him in St Louis at The Pageant when he was touring that Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. He told that story there too. It’s a damn shame he can’t get his own movie back.
That leads to a bit of a conundrum regarding how involved HW was with every movie with a Mirimax label on it, since they were also a distribution company. I could see that Smith, or Tarantino, being way more involved in all the casting and producing side of things, than a movie like Good Will Hunting. Gervais nailed it at the Golden Globes - ' our next presenter starred in Netflix's Birdbox, a,movie where people survive by acting like they don't see a thing.... sort of like working for HW
Y’know, I keep participating in capitalist culture, knowing it’s killing the less privileged. I keep buying takeout in plastic and I’ve begun wearing makeup again, knowing the damage plastics and microplastics do to ALL living beings. I can’t know KS’s level of awareness and justifications, but everybody’s just human, f’ing up like humans do.
@@leemires5315Haha lucky for me my mom bought one Without knowing what it is and then I inherited it because she doesn't buy much Blu-rays & has really no interest in them. So yeah I have DOGMA on Blu-Ray.
Funny this showed up on RU-vid, I asked him the question. It was so cool meeting him and seeing just how down to earth he is. I hope the announcement of Dogma Remaster suggests he may have made some headway in getting the rights back.
Love a lot of Kevin's work, Dogma in particular. It does baffle me regarding the various bankruptcy types in usa, when despite compensation awards by a court, someone can hold on to assets like this.
Had the pleasure of meeting him at a con a couple years ago. I'm very happy to say that he is one of those celebs that is exactly who you hope they will be.
Kevin Smith is awesome. I love that he said “I would know and I need to look in the mirror every day”. So many people seem to be okay with shady crap as long as they can hide it. If you are a good person you can’t hide shady crap from yourself and that should be enough NOT to do shady shit.
I copped 2 Blu-rays of Dogma @ a used record store a few years back.... No lie. I'll flip one in a heartbeat lol. They priced them @ 10-12 dollars @ the time...
The issue with the rights is that HW has to agree to the sale (as Kev says), or be forced to sell by order of the Court during his lifetime. If he is willing (or if his estate is willing to sell once he has passed away), I'd happy donate a couple of hundred dollars to the cause for him to recover the rights.
One of my fave films ever. As much as I’d love to see a part 2 of Dogma Kevin has done the honourable thing by refusing to allow that criminal to be associated with the movie any further. Gotta love Kevin ! ❤
I buy a lot of movies. Been buying a lot of movies for over 20 years. One of the few times I can specifically remember buying a specific movie is Dogma. 2-disc special edition, because the one guy working at the Sam Goody at the mall was so eager to sell it to me that while I was looking at it he sidled up next to me and handed me a coupon all "hey, you were gonna use this, right?" To this day it's one of the dvds I'll likely never get rid of, even if I find a blu ray copy of it somewhere. Maybe if this situation ever gets cleared up and there's a nice 4k release that has all the same features, but it'd take nothing less than that for me to part with my copy.
Yeah, but that's life for some people. Some parts of life are a real dick punch. I'm going through that part right now, so I can relate to it. Funnily enough, I actually really like 3. Edit: and then I re-watched 3.
Dogma, I was just a bit too young to see when it came out. Thankfully when Jay & Silent Bob came out, I saw it as an advance screening so in a theater with fans. The Drive In had that playing after Clerks and Dogma after those two, so I did get to see it on the big screen. Inside my car, though the laughs were still heard.
Kevin Smith is such a legend and a great story teller. I think he and Sylvester Stallone have something in common here. Sylvester Stallone doesn't own Rocky because Producer Irwin Winkler bought the rights. Stallone is really pissed about it. Just like with Kevin he's in a situation where his pride and joy movie is not owned by a Studio but by an individual who won't give it up. Who are these jackasses and why is the industry still tolerating them?
You're right that they're similar in principle, but the difference is that the Rocky IP is still worth a fortune. They're still making movies that make hundreds of millions of dollars under the Rocky license. IF we assume that Stallone is offering fair market value for it, then maybe Smith's situation would be similar. Fair value would be a HUGE number because Rocky movies probably do well in streaming and will most likely be remade at some point in the future for potential billions in box office. So the Rocky IP is still staggeringly valuable and therefore a huge asset for Winkler, who is very near the end of his life. I'm sure he's plenty rich, but that license is a tremendous asset for his estate in terms of future earnings. He produced a lot of prestigious and lucrative films in his career, but those streaming residuals and redistribution payouts are small potatoes compared to Rocky's potential future. It's also a part of Winkler's legacy as a producer. The people that took a chance on that movie with Stallone as the lead ALL contributed to maybe the biggest underdog film of all time. Of course it's nowhere near as personal as it is to Stallone, but it's very meaningful to Winkler, too. Stallone is also an old man now and likewise thinking about his legacy and his family's financial future, but Winkler is in his nineties I think and despite a storied career he's most likely nowhere near Stallone in terms of wealth. That Rocky license could take care of his family for generations, and is rightfully his. I sympathize with Stallone's position. Of course it'd be great if he owned it, but that's the way the business works. He sold something to set himself up for a bright future in Hollywood, and that proved to be a worthwhile sacrifice. He became a colossal superstar on the back of that movie and made hundreds of millions of dollars. It was in no way a bad deal for him. Quite the contrary. What Winkler did is what producers do. They gamble on small films becoming big films, and the enormous successes are what earn them their reputations and money. Plenty of those gambles don't pay off and many lose money. He bought Rocky fair and square and was a big part of its initial success. Should he part with it now IF Stallone offered him a legit fair deal (which, again, would be HUGE money)? Sure, it would FEEL like the right thing to do, but his family would almost immediately lose a large chunk of that money in estate taxes. The most sound thing for his family to do financially is to wait until he passes before selling it, and maybe that's the plan. We have no way of knowing. What's going on with Dogma is entirely different in that way. Dogma earns no money as it is now. It's not available to stream for profit anywhere and is most likely not in current print for physical purchase. And if Smith bought it and made it available, it wouldn't be a huge earner for him. What he says about Weinstein is spot on -- he's holding the movie hostage just because he can. He has nothing to gain from it except whatever feeling he gets from saying no. I'd bet his beneficiaries will sell it when he dies, which shouldn't be long. Unless he puts something in his will that prevents it, which I wouldn't put past the prick.
I don't understand your annoyance. Someone buys something, be it a car, a house or music and film rights... once they buy it, it's theirs. Why should they sell it to anyone else? Buy a painting from a shop, it's yours. Later on, he artist becomes famous, and your painting is now worth millions. Does the shop have the right to claim it back? Just because you don't like the owner, if it's bought legally, it's tough luck.
@@another3997 Not the same thing at all. This is about copyright not ownership. To buy a franchise from under the creator and them do nothing with it is just a dick move. This is why The Fantastic Four had such trouble in movies because people were holding the rights with no intention of utilising them. It's like when supermarkets buy land just so no-one else can put a supermarket there. Or when a jealous Ex kills their former partner so no-one else can be with them. It's just controlling and spiteful. Why buy the rights to a movie and hold on to them when you're NEVER going to use them? Because you're a control freak. It's not even an Investment because No-one's making money on it.
This is awesome. So glad to know what exactly is going on with it. But that's hilarious that he played it at the theater. Couldn't he just buy a 35mm print of it and that's that.
“No one will ever know,” “but I will know,” has there been a time where Kevin Smith had some juicy gossip on anyone and didn’t talk about in front of a crowd. We would have found out.
I have a feeling even without Harvey picking up Kevin's first movie.. we would still have found out about Kevin's talents.. movies, TV, even stand up, he would have made it
Dogma and WKRP are two of the best entertainment properties that ended up being permanently messed up by the business dealings behind the scenes. Very sad but Kevin is right not to pursue it further.
I can’t believe Kevin Smith has so little money after all this time and I can’t believe he doesn’t think dogma can make back millions of dollars on streaming or whatever
Things they don’t tell new artists like songwriters and filmmakers: You don’t own any of your stuff until you get successful enough to demand it in your contracts. The sad truth. We’d probably have more masterpieces if the executives of these companies would give the creators full ownership from the get-go.
