McDonald's had a big promotion deal with Batman Forever. Remember the glass handled transparent mugs? I still have the Batman and Two-Face ones. Sturdy 20 years later.
+Emperor Psycho what dicks studios executives were. and i can say the same thing to the parents who bitched about batman returns being too dark and violent. did they even see the first movie? that movie wasn't all rainbows and unicorns either
+Jason Rameriz This movie was deliberately trying to bring the corny 60s Adam West Batman into a big budget action movie. It did not work. Ho boy did it not work.
I think that's the idea though. I enjoy these movies because I was a kid when they came out. I didn't care about plot or acting. I just enjoyed seeing Batman and Robin. If I had been an adult when these came out I definitely would have criticized them the same way they are. But as a kid I didnt take them that serious.
I liked it alot more as a kid but even now it still has its charm. Batman and robin is the one i cant tolerate watching, the mr freeze puns are the one thing i do like
I don't know it for fact, but being in my 20s when the Schumacher ones came out, the campy colors and all didn't bother me or my friends of the same age, and it didn't seem to bother little kids. But I suspect the ones who really hated it were teenagers at the time who felt like it was some step backward from the more mature Phantasm movie and BTAS of the previous few years, and who believed bashing the Adam West TV show was an essential rite of passage.
@@75aces97 I'd be 11 when this came out, I didn't see it in theaters back then. I do recall them re-relasing the Seal song for it, which the kids now think was made for the film. But you are correct after BTAS the only way forward was Nolan or the Batman stuff. Plus Riddler and Two Face were so much better in BTAS and I would have rather have had that over Carey, at his peak, being Carey does Frank Groschen. All they had to do was slow the films down and just do Two Face from the animated series or Riddler as the actual intellectual threat to Batman. But hey Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore probably at their peaks of hotness in this film.
if you like these check out a a channel you might like. Oliver Harper he does the same thing with movies and has me giggling to myself while listening to them on the way to work. Check out Skyfall commentary first :) Let me know what you think.
Kev is so right-on. Batman refers to him as Two Face when he's talking about him, but he calls him Harvey when he's talking to him, it adds a little personal touch because they have history. Batman usually never refers to his villains by their stage names when he's talking directly to them, except for those who lack a birth name like Joker and Bane.
@Chris Seymouryeah but Bruce and Jack didn't know each other beforehand. The original comment is talking about the history the characters have, Jack and Bruce, don't have any.
I used to think that but I think he’s referring to the guy he’s telling the story about,as an audience we know they’re the same though. I think he’s saying “let me tell you about this guy I know...Jack” as in the guy he’s referring to. I could be wrong
That chase meridian sex scene with her bush shaved like a bat symbol and batman leaving the cowl and cape on is a fantasy we've all imagined, let's admit it.
Batman Forever was awesome for its time. I remember seeing it in theaters for this kids birthday party and everyone was going apeshit during the opening scene.
Normally Im not the type to bitch about ads throughout, but its really annoying on a commentary track. Have to keep realligning the movie with the track over and over..😵
Yeah everybody talk shit I saw the movie when I was a kid in theaters and I loved it. And I still love her to this day when I’m 30 I think it was a Unique. Val Kilmer was a decent Batman, riddler was a little to joker. And it beat the hell out of Batman and robin.
One thing that I hadn't noticed before was how Bruce looked at that malysian doll, which was half black half white, kinda' like Two-Face. That's was actually pretty cool moment and you could see the regret in his eyes. Something I didn't expect in this film.
Kevin's beast point is Robin not being a kid, him being a full grown man just kills everything that would give it pathos, just makes it kind of awkward.
My favourite of the four Batman movies my theory of why people hated it back then because its not Tim Burton now people don't like it because its a trend to hate this movie.
***** No that's what I'm what saying is its mostly following trend of it was hated and mostly look at all of the negativity it had and when you see reviews about it the ones I've seen its mostly "This movie is silly camp its just entertainment for kids and no good storytelling for the adults."maybe not those exact words but hopefully you get the gist of it.
of the 80s-90s era.. the Batman movies actually go in order of good to BAD.. and batman forever completely flips the switch from gothic.. to campy action, and goes even further in Batman and Robin.. they go away from the dark sets in the first 2 and throw in day glo.. plus the villains are even more played for laughs. If Jones had played it straight.. and Carrey brought it down a level.. and played it a bit more sinister.. it actually had a shot to be a great movie..
20:16 “Yeah he did-he [Joel Schumacher] was not a comic book guy.” That’s actually such a misconception, Joel Schumacher actually WAS a huge Batman fan, more than Tim Burton, and he came on the project with the intent of carrying on the dark, gothic, Deco-Noire style of Tim Burton’s first two films. However Warner Bros. was still unwinding from the backlash of Batman Returns and made Schumacher make the film lighter and friendlier. Schumacher had also wanted to make a Batman: Year One film, but was shelved after the reception of Batman & Robin.
They might be on that....this was published only a month ago now. Maybe they're working their way up to it. EDIT: At about 2:10:00 Kevin says a Batman & Robin commentary is next. Patience is a virtue.
The thing that gets me is at the time I thought all of those early Batman movies were the same universe. Different directors and different actors in the leads ,but same universe. Fast forward to today, the Flash movie changes that.
When they came out they WERE the same universe. Nobody was thinking about multiverse stuff. It's the same as Sean Connery in Dr. No and Roger Moore in Moonraker being the "same" James Bond..
I don't get the feeling they know how popular these Batman commentaries are. There's real demand here for the Nolan and Reeves films, the 66 film, episodes of the many different shows, you could do so much with this format.
That might be his own prejudice. By 1995 Kevin Smith had already directed 2 feature films, looked like an adult, and probably saw himself as way too old to play Robin. And COD is a few months older than Smith. FWIW I sorta saw it the same way. I was 20 when I saw it and knowing that O'Donnell is years older than me it was tough to buy it.
Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face is awful. I'm sure he's embarrassed to think of it now, and if you asked him about it during an interview, I imagine he'd slap you and walk out of the room. Or maybe just start crying and vomiting.
John Clavis Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face is the movie's biggest low point. Still, the writers managed to sneak in a hint of the character's true depth by including that television re-enactment of his (very faithful to the comic-books') origin story in the background. Still, better to have the least important half of an antagonist duo be mistreated than the protagonist, as occurs in Tim Burton's films, in which Bruce Wayne is portrayed as an aloof eccentric trust fund Billionaire whose primary motivation to be Batman is driven as much by boredom as by the murder of his parents. Forever pulls inspiration from all incarnations of the Batman persona, from the 1960's silly cartoon psychedelia, to the 1970's "New Look", and even Frank Miller's bleak 1980's re-interpretation of the character.
Fun fact: Val Kilmer did not get along well with Joel Schumacher (for reasons more to do with the studio and producers), but it was Jim Carry & Tommy Lee Jones had real animosity with each other nearly all the whole shooting schedule (it has been mentioned on other commentaries).
Tommy Lee Jones was bitter that his lame oscar bait movie about Ty Cobb completely flopped while Jim Carrey was fresh of 3 back to back to back blockbuster hits.
To think THIS COULD HAVE BEEN; BATMAN CONTINUES Michael Keaton read the script "THIS IS CRAP. THE FUCK TIM???" Mike calls Tim Burton "Batman 3???" That's HOW Tim Burton found out Warner Bros. fired him. "BATMAN FOREVER??? Sounds like something one would write in a yearbook FOREVER? Gross." - Tim Burton
I appreciate you putting this together but the obnoxious ads aren’t needed. Profiting off other ppls work? In turn throwing off the timing like 7 times there.... not cool
RIDDLER should be the one glorifying the scene with colors...literally rainbowing BATMAN out of such darkness. BATMAN FOREVER was certainly light hearted; which is understanding considering RIDDLER as a villain. Two-Face looks like he's out of Star Trek TNG
Kevin, please take Marc and do commentaries on all the modern Superman movies. I love you guys; you're almost as good as Rifftrax. Then do the Spider-Man ones.
Nolan comes back for one more movie with Christian Bale batman and Joseph G Levitt as Nightwing: The Dark Knight Rises Forever… people would praise that title lol
I just wanna say, this commentary does not work when its monetized for RU-vid ads. lol So I have to repeatedly pause the movie and rewind it to make up for the ads that constantly interrupt the commentary's run time. Super sucks!
Batman & Robin is extremely underrated. THAT had the best opening. It may even be my favorite of the four films. It was fucking awesome. People are so easily led to have a decision based on everyone else. Look at religion. Stupid fucks.
+Bill Hiers he has an everlasting grudge against Tim Burton because Burton rejected his script for Superman Lives...okay fine, not many people appreciate the art of Batman Returns but I just can't stand how this guy criticises the 1989 movie "Batman", the epitome of Batman movies.
As a big fan of Kevin Smith, Batman, AND Mystery Science Theater 3000...this was just incredible! Thank you both so much for doing this, guys! Definitely going back to watch the first two commentaries soon. This was great.
batman forever / judge dread -95 barbwire -96 batman and robin -97 blade -98 matrix -99 xmen -00 from hell -01 spiderman -02 daredevil / hulk -03 hellboy / punisher -04 (catwoman XD) batman begins -05 superman returns -06 300 -07 ironman -08 watchmen -09 ironman 2 -10 thor / captain america / xmen first class- 11 avengers -12 iron man 3 -13 guardians of the galaxy/ xmen days of future past -14
How can Kevin Smith criticise any film he's never made a good one himself. And who died and made him king of the nerds? Also he should never be forgiven for what he did to BATMAN in that Shit comic he wrote when he took the classic "Ladies. Gentlemen. You have eaten well." Seen from year one and made Bruce piss his pants
These commentaries are hilarious, but you can make a drinking a game out of... "Batman wouldn't do X" "Something something Chris Nolan's films" "BJ joke" Etc.
Hmm. Controversial opinion but I prefer Batman & Robin to Forever. Before you all shoot me it's because Forever is almost amazing... almost. But Jim Carrey is far too OTT, Riddler just fails when he should be easy to write... Two-Face is appalling (that's more Tommy Lee's fault). Kilmer to me is bland personified. He's better than Clooney but he's still bland. And the point is it's all bland. Nothing is great... and it should be with the budget and director involved. I adore Nicole Kidman but Chase just misses the mark. At least Batman & Robin is irredeemable crap. The whole thing is bad so you go into it knowing you have to prepare for crap. Someone it means I can watch it in a kitsch, 'laugh at the stupid thing' way. But Batman Forever ISN'T bad, certainly not bad enough to laugh at it. It's just so irredeemably bland and Carrey and Lee Jones are TERRIBLE. So I'd rather watch Batman & Robin.
say what you want Jim nailed Riddler. They will eventually recreate him dark but this was amazing... I'm following along, its raining out and i have no life right now. lol
+Adam S Have... have you ever read a comic with Riddler in it? Have you ever seen an animated series episode with Riddler in it? This was basically "Ace Ventura as The Riddler". Carrey nailed nothing.
callmeinstead i've read almost every batman riddler was a jilted obsessed freak, Carry did bring some Ace in but that's what you get when you go camp not dark. I think Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in BvS style would be a better darker riddler than lex (they miscast Jesse in my opinion)
I have a lot of fond memories with this movie. I find it funny how Im listening to this as Im watching it. But, like I said, I have a lot of memories with this movie.
I cracked up at 1:22:43. That was insane! Lot of plot holes in this film; Two-face and Riddler raid Bruce's mansion, and then just leave him there? Really? This was a very fun commentary that analyzes all the good and bad things in the film.
I remember going in for the casting call for Robin in Boston for this movie. Some half truths from the casting director. We were told Michael Keaton was coming back as Batman and Robin Williams had been cast as Riddler but Two-face had not been cast. I think the soundtrack was the only good thing about the movie.. I will say Jim Carrey was funny but I think Schumacher watched the tv series too much which is why I believe this was the most campy Batman movie next to Batman and Robin. Most fans want the Dark Knight not the Disco, Campy, Batman... It was not Val's fault on how he played the role, Schumacher insisted. I also resent Schumacher lying through his teeth on how he wanted Val for the fouth, Joel let Val out of his contract and There is a quote from Schumacher saying "Val was an asshole, I never want to work with him again....
Jim Carry was the reason Tommy Lee Jones acted Two Face in one tone like the Joker. They antagonized each other to the point Schumacher filmed them separately at times because of it, Kevin Smith mentioned it before. Val thought he would be given more... say in the role and Schumacher never delt properly with the casts expectations.
didn't superman save those oil workers at the beginning of man of steel? and then lois lane like three times later? and those soldiers in the smallville fight? and that family at the end when he snapped zod's neck? MoS is far from perfect but supes saved way more people in that one then he did in BvS.
