How Many Days? Day 874
Writer / Director Kevin Smith gives new filmmakers some ideas on how to act on set, always have the answer, treat people well... and also has some great advice for making sure the edit of your film is going to be tight and exactly what the audience can tolerate or enjoy.
Filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth is on a mission to meet the Hollywood professionals that have inspired him in his career thus far.
Steven Spielberg, Kevin Smith, Jimmy Eat World, Zach Braff, Tom Anderson, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Johnny Depp, Harry Knowles, Dan Mirvish, Bryan Singer, and Ellen DeGeneres.
Click here to see the daily video journals from Gavin as he asks, pleads, begs, whines for these people to sit down for dinner and offer advice and encouragement for his directing career.

You know, A lot of us watching this want to be a filmmaker. But, it's hard to actually make it, where everyone knows your movie and a lots of people love it and you have a career out of it. But Kevin Smith had the right set of mine when he wrote Clerks. If you watch his first Q&A he said "I'm going to do this, if I don't make it big, fuck it. At least I made it." I try to be like that. I'm going to make my movies, even if it's out of my own pocket. No ones going to stop me. Fuck it.

The fact that he stood out in the cold rain to give this interviews makes me respect him so much more. You can tell he honestly is giving his heart in this interview and is doing this purely to try and help people achieve their dream, just like he did so many years ago. Great video

This advice is in line with what Jerry Lewis said, about not being too kind or else you will wait in line like everyone else. You gotta swing hard to make it to 2nd and 3rd base. Love it!

How many 2.5 hour movies do we see now? He's right, even a superhero movie needs proper editing, and Hollywood seems to have lost that touch over the past few years (thanks Bob Orci).

He was a god in film school, gave us all advice. Honestly, I don't think he's a great director but man, his approach is so refreshing and inspiring. He just goes out and makes his movies and loves doing it... that's what it's all about.

Kevin Smith has always been an inspiration. Yes he's had a few hiccups (Jersey girl) but overall not only has he put out some cult classics, he also has a lot of inspiring and useful tips for newcomers. It's nice that he would stand in the cold/rain to talk to an interviewer.

This is some great advice! You have to be unreasonable these days because most people will tell you that you're no good, even if you are. I really agree with the part about cutting things down to the bone. It is very difficult to cut your work down, but it is a necessary evil. Even as an "artist" you have to keep things interesting for an audience or you won't sell. I had to make some brutal cuts on my last feature, and even though the material was good: it makes the film better as a whole.

This guy and Kubrick are my inspirations for film-making. I have an utmost gratitude for them and a sense of homage towards them. I can't thank them enough. Kevin Smith and Stanley Kubrick are my heroes. Now, I just have to get started.

Don't want to sound to pretentious, but personally I think the greatest advice for film making is actually doing it. You learn so much from actually commencing it

Kevin Smith is my mentor! And he's from Red Bank, New Jersey! He is da man! I loved "Clerks", "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"! I am a would be filmmaker and I am from Linden, New Jersey. My first film takes place in Paterson, New Jersey. It is being rewritten as we speak. The movie has two volumes and I am currently rewriting the first. When it is finished, I am going to start the next phase of making the film. Thanks for posting the video, Gavin. You and Kevin rock!

@GavinMichaelBooth You're welcome! I'm just trying to find my niche in life, really, mainly in media. Trying to figure out if I do well with reviews, or skits, or just plain being a personality when I make vlogs. The Journey is an independent documentary by Eric Saperston, who decided to take a road trip in his Winnebago and meet the biggest names in business/entertainment. His goal was to take them out for coffee and ask for their advice on life/being successful.

@Mitchsmooth it was more than that. The ORIGINAL Clerks - the version he shot and took to festivals (before getting bands like Soul Asylum on the soundtrack, getting cleaned up and remastered and having the sound redone on Mirimax's tab, etc) cost in the 25,000 range. Clerks 2 was EASILY a million dollar production.. if not more like 4-5 million.

@zigifrojd He means trimming the fat... because sometimes YOU think ALL the scenes are great but they aren't necessary for the finished film. Especially for first time indie filmmakers. He's talking about cutting it down to tell the most interesting film -- if that saves you some bad acting, less than stellar lighting, a few audio mistakes by cutting down some of your less than best stuff it can make the film BETTER... saying more with less so to say.

Tim Burton is like a never ending bowl of Chocolate Ice Cream. If you REALLY love Chocolate Ice Cream, Tim Burton is amazing all the time. However, if you're an average person, the same flavor of movie for every.single.movie gets real old, real fast. While Burton may be a better cinematographer than Smith, you can't say that he's a better storyteller or writer. Smith just tends to aim for the middle, because the middle is where he's comfortable. I wish he'd aim higher though. Just my 2 cents.

I come here again and again when I’m depressed. Pep’s me up a bit. This industry is so full of talkers and armchair critics. Not many doers. At least Kevin is a doer man. New film makers, watch out for the Enthusiasm Vampires. They suck it out of you quicker than Dracula. EV's criticize everything, offer no solutions. Spielberg, Lucas, Cameron, Scorsese, Scott say go and shoot. Just do it! you'll learn as you go. Improve with practice. New Years Res. Get rid of EV's from your life period!!

he surely knows what he's talking about. when he was saying "getting the message across, giving the audience something to take away from the theatre, giving them something to think about" i thought about some movies that tend to go on and on and on. clearly, if a writer has to make a 3 hour movie as to why the chicken crossed the road. he/she needs to get a life :)
