Kevin Sun - Introduction to Sranan Tongo (Surinamese Creole)

Due to Suriname’s peculiar history as a British colony that was taken over by the Dutch, isolating it from the influence of standard English, the English-based creole language of Suriname is one of the most conservative (or least “de-creolized”) English creoles. Additional layers of Portuguese, African and Dutch influence have produced a language that presents a unique snapshot of the troubled early years of colonialism in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to Sranan’s English roots and straightforward grammar, this workshop - which will include assisted reading of original Sranan folktales and other texts - should be able to give participants a solid footing in the fundamentals of this language, while providing resources for further independent exploration.

I commend you for accurately pointing out the history. It's interesting how the Surinamese community outside the country (e.g. Netherlands, ABC Islands, U.S.) is probably larger than the population in the country itself. Sranan tongo is still widely spoken within those communities Tip: taki is pronounced with a short a, not a long one. Pikin is pronounced as ptjien (pkin). When the letter k is followed by an e or i the k is sometimes pronounced as tj. The e is mostly pronounced as a short i, as in 'him'. So ede is pronounced as idi 😉

This was incredibly fascinating! Got into a discussion with a friend from Suriname and discovered it overlaps with my Sierra Leonean creole (bit more complex than Nigerian creole). However, your demonstration of understanding of the links between the languages is really impressive. Thanks for sharing!

Prakiseri is Prakiseren in Dutch, which means “thinking over”, a bit oldfashioned, but still in use. Makandra comes from the Dutch words, “met elkander” meaning together. I guess the population of the Netherlands as a trading nation with already at that time a lot of immigrants in their home country, where always quick language learners (till today) and just added the new language to their vocabulary. Like Afrikaans is a creole language, while when the English came in, they demanded everyone to speak English. Because the English where not able to learn a second language quickly, to this present day for some reason.

I live in Brazil and I can say surely: there is almost no cultural interchange between Brazil and Suriname. I feel sorry for that.

My family just calls it Taki Taki.. I’m almost 40 yrs old and I’m just finding out that Taki Taki is called Sranan Tongo.. I remember it was rumored years ago that the Dutch still own parts of Manhattan.. We have a decent Suri community here in NYC.. But, American Creoles stem from trade languages started here in the Americas.. Ppl think we got our culture from African slaves when that’s opposite from the truth.. African slaves did not stand out more than the Asian, North American and European slaves.. It was American Indian slaves who built up West Africa tho and that’s facts, so the dialects are of our own doing.. Stop giving Africa credit for what our American Indian ancestors did..
