i am 100% in on eyewear now for PB...I have the CRBN, some Oakley sunglasses, Under Armour sunglass and some glasses that John sent me for a question submission and no matter what I wear, I like all of them...the price of the Briotti is high but buy once/cry once is my motto for quality stuff...i will look into these because eyewear is vital for me now

Great show and thanks for the review on Brioti sunglasses. I’ve always played in Rx glasses but just had cataracts removed so I’ll be able to play in non-Rx glasses. I started to look at RIA, Briioti and others and was inundated with ads. Your review really helped!

Played against a gearbox pro this past weekend. Hottest paddle I ever experienced. Absolute cannon in the hands of someone that couldn’t control it. Sending balls out left and right. More powerful than the joola gen 3. With the recent continued delisting, I will refrain from picking one up.

Thinner grips fun fact: in racquetball the racquet grips typically come in two sizes; ss and xs. The ss stands for super small and is intended for normal hand sizes and the xs is extra small and is intended for people with larger hand sizes. I believe the sport started out with grip sizes closer to tennis standards but players found they could get more power is smaller grips. The smaller grip allows the handle to whip/pivot in the hand more. I wouldn’t be surprised if pickleball goes the same way as tennis player paddle preferences decrease as the sport grows into its own.

I agree about the handle on the shogun. I took the grip off and replaced it with 3 over grips by Tourna. Same color. I usually like a 4.25 with one over grip

Agreed. Handle feels slightly bigger than my other paddles. Plays softer than Filth. I like it but not love it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks Eddie for the explanation, with thinner grips I’ve also found I can produce more wrist snap/action to generate more topspin on serves, drives and rolls coming from tennis.

Thanks for answering my question! I've been on the balance point over swingweight bandwagon for a bit now. I had a thought about a metric to easily demonstrate how balanced/head heavy a paddle is based on data you already have in your database: Take (balance point)/(overall length) to quantify balance %. I understand that swingweight can give a general idea, but it doesn't provide any specific weight distribution metric. You have the balance point percentile, and that works for ranking, but in this area I'd personally prefer a more objective indicator to give me an idea of how much weight I would need to add to achieve my desired balance. I hope that makes sense!

Gonna give the Eddie grip treatment a try! Used to love the super thin grips, I started playing in 2019 and right out the gate, used the Gearbox GX6's, with the 3 5/8 grip. A LOT of maneuverability there, and ability for wristy stuff. Now a few years later and finally on more stable, streamlined polypropylene core paddles; last year was experimenting putting overgrips on all my paddles on top of stock grip -- now I am back on just one grip, stock grip, on 4.25" handles 👍

I love the Brioti glasses! They're the best brand for venting and better vision in my opinion. I sweat and used to fog up a lot, but that never happens since I switched to Brioti. They're also strong. I've caught a line drive to the face, directly hitting the lens of my glasses, and they didn't break or scratch. I've had others crack before with lesser hits. Obviously, the goal is to not get pegged, but kisses off the tape are difficult to account for.

Curious. Where do you grip your handle? Most pros grip it so that the butt cap is 1/4 of the way inside the palm so that the large flashy part overhangs and does not rest on the grip. I wonder how adding weight on the endcap works in this scenario.

Thanks for the review! I just tried out a Mark 1 today and am going to pull the trigger. I currently have a Pickleball Ape but the Mark 1 can do so much more. I'm a 4.2 player and love the long handles. BTW, it's amazing how similar you both sound. If you don't look at the screen, you sound exactly the same.

What do you guys think the Slyce cap does to the vertical position of the sweet spot on a paddle? And would you consider using one on a Volair Mach 2 Forza? I'm currently testing about 14 grams of lead on the base plate of my Mach 1 Forza that already has a lot of side weighting. That paddle currently weighs 9.6 oz after the added baseplate weight addition.

Wow there will be a lot more delistings coming if they go by the sub section and or those that fall into it and are older paddles and haven’t been an issue might be looked over? Looks like Gearbox reeled a lot of manufactures in and sent them down a one way road, with a cliff at the end, and so far they are getting away with what others can’t….

I wonder how the balance point changes with the hesacore as well. Cause they are about .5 ounces as well. I would love to see a comparison with that vs the .5 ounce slyce endcap.

Shogun Vs Filth thoughts.... In bikes (road bikes), titanium frames are typically more flexy or compliant than carbon fiber frames. although they can certainly tweak the end result based on how the carbon is laid up or how the titanium tubing is formed or worked. So it makes sense that the titanium may be contributing to a softer feel in the Shogun than the Filth. But I was wondering if that flexiness might contribute to more of a trampoline effect in the Shogun. Just like fiberglass is less stiff than carbon and you see fiberglass often used in some power paddles.

You're right - carbon fiber has a higher modulus (less flex) than titanium. I wouldn't have thought that just adding titanium threads into carbon fiber would be noticeable, but it definitely is. The Modulus GPa of common paddle materials are (low score is more flexible; high score is stiffer): fiberglass (52-87), Kevlar (70-112), titanium (100-120), unidirectional carbon fiber (300-400)

Just ordered the Slyce for my Ruby. I'm new to the sport and have a question. What are your thoughts on wearing a watch on your paddle arm? I wear G-shock on my right wrist, and it's heavy. Would I be better off taking it off while playing? Thanks.

First, let me say you have great taste in watches! Love the gshocks. I have three myself! That being said, I would never wear one on my paddle hand/wrist. Too clunky and heavy. I do wear an apple watch, but on my off hand wrist.

The danger of increasing spin is that it de facto increases power because it allows people to swing harder. Right now, the maximum velocity of a speedup is capped by the geometry of the court, because if you hit with too much power and an upward trajectory the ball will go long. If the opponent sees you winding up a full swing on a low ball, all they have to do is get out of the way of the ball. But if you can hit with more spin, then you can hit a speedup using a higher percentage of your total strength while giving the ball enough shape to land in the court. Which means that your opponent can't just dodge the body bag, they have to stay in front of the ball and try to defend it. What ultimately matters for safety is not the maximum velocity of the ball, but the time available for the player to react. A serve hit at 60mph is much less dangerous than a speedup hit at 40mph at a target right across the kitchen. So a low power, high spin paddle is potentially even more dangerous than a high power, low spin paddle like the Gearbox if it consistently leads to scenarios where people are hitting with most of their power at the kitchen.

I like where you're coming from on this, but I would add a couple of things. First, you're not accounting for hard shots aimed at the body with no intention of landing in the court. Body bags are a real option in pickleball, which makes high octane paddles dangerous, particularly when there's less spin, because more of your swing energy can go into ball speed. Second, your swing path needs to change to impart spin, so some of the energy in your swing goes into brushing up on the ball, or slicing down, and that takes away from overall ball speed.

@@johnkewpickleball The first point is well taken, but the second one is only true to the extent that you have a constant amount of muscular force that you have to allocate between imparting velocity and imparting spin. I'd argue that doesn't apply most of the time, because the limiting factor in the large majority of pickleball strokes is not how much force the athlete can put out, but what ball trajectory it is possible to hit before the ball either flies out or pops up and can be countered. In practice, in sports like tennis where the spin potential of racquets has gone up, we've seen strokes get both faster and spinnier at the same time. Yes, some of the force imparted on the ball produces spin instead of translational velocity, but the athlete simply compensates by using even more force.

Eddie. As far as the Hesacore goes are you using/ trying the pink (thinnest) one? I also very much so prefer a thinner grip and feel naked without a pink Hesacore and a tightly stretched with minimal overlap overgrip. Also have looked into tons of overgrip companies and have settled on the thinnest that maintains durability. I hope this helps!

Majority of people I know that bought Joola's have returned them. They have been repurchasing all different brands. Diadem 18K, Thrive Azul. Spartus Apollo, Honolulu JK series. None of them went to a single brand to replace the Joola's.

Hey guys love the pod! Went to check out the slyce caps and they only offer 28 grams 1.0 oz and 15 grams 1/2 oz. You mentioned in your pod to start at 3 grams am I missing something?

The 3 grams was in reference to the lead/tungsten you could add to the edge guard. I find that the speedcap needs to be 'offset' by some degree with opposing head weight. For me, the sweetspot is the 28g speedcap and 12g total of lead tape (6g on each side).

Yes Eddie the size of the company matters a lot. Cash flow, cash reserves, credit/borrowing power, inventory control, cost control and profitability are the life blood of a company. Larger companies usually have larger cash reserves, lines of credit and borrowing capacity, to help them better survive turbulent financial events. Running a successful business is a complex task, but for the sake of simplification, lets say your household brings in a combined $200,000.00($16,667/mth) in annual salaries, you then budget your household expenditures, savings and investments based on this amount, then you wake up tomorrow and this amount has been cut in half, plus both of your luxury cars have exploded, would that be financially challenging for you, and cause you serious stress, strain and uncertainty?

$30 seems a little expensive for the end cap. I have some 2 gram per inch lead that I could wrap under the over grip. Think that would be similar? Or throw a few quarters inside the original end cap 😂

Sure, adding lead or tungsten tape in the handle will do the same. The only issue there is that it changes the shape of your handle. When I've tried adding lead under the grip in the past, it always bugged me how it felt

Nice new name. Fair enough. JW had a lousy weekend, glad he and his sister won Bronze. IMO, Sacramento Tour had the worst video quality I have ever seen on any YT stream. It's not in the posting, it is in the filming, most likely only 720p at most. You can tell, when the commercials come on, they are crystal clear.

I know people are willing to spend $$ on a paddle but an extra $30 for a end cap seems like a lot … Haven’t tried this so maybe I’m way off but it “feels like” you could just put (glue?) a coin or some lead weight inside your existing cap … It would be interesting to know if this achieves the same thing … or even 75% of the same thing.

You could. I've drilled into handles to insert weight and I've added weight under the grip tape. Those homemade solutions work fine, but the Slyce is way more elegant and well crafted. Maybe it's not for everyone, but for those who care about such things, it's worth the money.

so with all the bans, I think the paddle reviews will get very boring, because everything is being capped, innovation stifled, I get it , but I think that will be the consequence. why go past a poly core, thermo, and peel ply. when the innovation is being struck down.

They have to draw the line somewhere or the game will be ruined. They banned the EVA paddles due to their trampoline effect and crazy power on hard flicks and overheads. The GB and these other floating core paddles are approaching the EVA power level.

Before we regulate the paddles any further why don't we regulate the ball and make a spec ball like every other racket sport. Its ridiculous to talk about all these measures and standards and have 10 different types of pickleballs that all react differently to heat and cold.

Even though the Joola paddles are delisted places like Lifetime are still pushing them. Their reasoning is that that they are still ok for amateur play. This is ridicules they should all be banned.

@@Houjixfuldon’t approve a core crushing design. According to their story and joolas, they literally don’t even know what paddles they are testing. They just test random paddles without knowing what they are, what’s inside, and then certify some other paddle. That’s what happened with the gen 3s. USAP is trash

I hear Joola may be filing a $45 million dollar lawsuit against the USAP. I hope so, this is long overdue!. What independent body is overseeing the USAP testing model, holding them accountable, making them more timely, more responsive to their clients? The USAP is the problem! They have no transparency, and no accountability, they're a black hole. Who is the third party tester, what is their company name, what are their qualifications, what is their track record, years in business, customer list, customer references, what scientific equipment are they using, where are their detailed, published, scientific test results for each paddle tested? The USAP collects too much money, tens of millions of dollars, to be shrouded in such secrecy. Sunlight is the best disenfectant. Pickleball is going soft with all this talk about injury, liability etc. There's a simple solution, wear protective eyewear, when compared to paddle prices, this is a simple, cheap solution. Don't dumb down pickleball more then it is. Be progressive, continue to evolve, keep an open mind, remember your fans/viewers.

All franklin balls blow... Any of them... they bought and paid their way to make the ball relevant! a true skilled player 4.0 or over would use a ball the game came from... A true skill level ball yellow dura fast 40!!! All other balls be woke broke joke not pickleball!!!! Get real about the game!!!

Oh no, lets not allow a 10% increase in power, but a 50% increase in spin is just fine???? I thought people were concerned about the change to the game and making it so physical??? Sorry grandmother.

@@johnkewpickleballwell that does seem to be what people want. The Gen 3s were super fun paddles, not a problem in my opinion. The whiners absolutely ruined all the fun. And the genesis of it was the idea that they were dangerous versus grandma….

@@johnkewpickleballthis sport is one of a few that has been inclusive multiple generations. That’s important to me and many others. The paddle return efficiencies prior to gen 3 were part of that recipe /game formula. The natural advantages of youth, power and aged related reaction time could be somewhat muted by experience. It’s also understandable that some folks want this to be just like racquetball, tennis , Padel or table tennis prior to the 40mm ball size.

@@user-gn2mm2vh9i For sure I love the equalizing aspect of pickleball. It's a real thing, and makes our sport special. But nearly every shot made at the pro level, including aggressive dinks, would be clean winners against the average grandparent. And that's a good thing for the sport, and for viewership. I don't think that increasing spin limits to 3K RPM would make much difference at all to average rec players. My point in the podcast is that we can probably all agree that we've reached or exceeded power levels, but extra spin could make the game more dynamic and fun to play/watch, without making the sport more dangerous or change the nature of it too much

We have a saying where I play. STAY IN YOUR LANE. It sounds cruel, but grandma and anyone else wouldn't be getting hurt if they followed the simple saying. Play with parity should be a better solution.
