River and Harbour Sand Bars make up a large proportion of Aotearoa New Zealand’s coastline and unfortunately over the last decade 29 preventable drowning deaths have occurred on these stretches of water. This is a number Coastguard is working hard to reduce in collaboration with Safer Boating.
In this video you’ll learn key info about this particular bar and hear insights from local mana whenua and Coastguard volunteers who service the Kaipara Harbour area, all with the aim of equipping you with the know-how to make the right decision about crossing this dangerous bar.
Through the creation of this Bar Awareness series, we’re aiming to reduce the risk of boating related drownings by enabling more New Zealanders to make the right decision when considering crossing a bar.

Another couple of suggestions . It’s a good idea to go out with another boat because if you get swamped or an engine fails , you don’t want to be swimming in the middle of the bar hoping the coastguard can find you down there ! It’s a big area to search . Also going out on a 2 metre swell with a marginal forecast is asking for trouble . 3-4 metres is nuts .

Kia Ora, Do you know if there is a bar between Auckland Island (Motu Maha) and Adams Island? The port of entry between the two seems narrower than say Manukau Harbour's. I am guessing there is no bar sand but maybe underwater rocks that create a bar. On a separate note, do you know if there are classes somewhere in Auckland for sailors to better understand their marine environment? For instance where to find the tide hours on remote islands when you are travelling, the main currents, dominant winds, best anchoring practices, best safety practices, communication with the main land, etc. Tēnā koutou.

On Auckland anniversary weekend I seen a charter boat cross the bar just past south spit. I was surfcasting of the northwestern point. In was a northerly and swell wasn’t very big maybe 1.5m. Has the south channel moved closer in?

How do compare and determine wich bar has the roughest conditions lol its depending on the weather on the day and the changes to the bar , the manukau is the most dangerous, because its narrow with alot of water going in and out of the bar and its shallow , its killed plenty of people even though all boaties know its dangerous and that they should be very careful , 15 foot tall triangular waves sitting there rolling on the out going tide and if your engine fails youll get swept into them and drowned, and when the tides coming in waves leap up at you ramping from off the bottom , waves moving from left to right at the same time , the water there is like if you ran with a bucket of water , wave squeezing each other pushing upwards and falling from undernearh you, try driving a boat over that
