Great information, easy to understand. I did the same test years ago, rolling the windows down FIRST. My 99 Tacoma, wouldn't lock the door if it Wasn't running but with key in ignition, like the Matrix. It was totalled when a Tesla t boned it. My 2007 Infiniti, put the key in the trunk, grabbed two arm fulls of stuff, shut the trunk. Car beeped at me and popped the trunk back open. Good to know how things work.

"you might want to roll down the window first" That's probably the best advice in this whole video. Honestly, there are many people out there that won't even think about doing that they would just toss their key in there and not even consider what might happen. Since I'm old school I used to always keep a spare key in my wallet. Nowadays, I just have AAA coverage if I have a problem like that where I'm locked out I can call them and they'll come out and unlock my car for me. One time I was out and about with a friend of mine in his car and he locked his keys inside so I called AAA to come out and in fact they used the bladder and a long adjustable rod exactly like you are doing it here. When you think about it with all the technological advancements they have made in automobiles the absolute worst and weakest link in the chain after all this time is still the battery.

What works for me is getting a spare key cut. The spare key won't start the car because there's no transponder. It will only open the door. I then hide the key somewhere under the car. Even if a crook found it, they won't be able to start the car. I usually don't keep valuables in the car so there's nothing of worth to steal.
@krikx08

a little trick I used to do (having a 2011 Mazda CX-7) was to detach the buttons part (remote control) of my key fob and leave it in my pants pocket all the time and forget about it (until I’d need it to open the car in case I’m locked out or something) and always use the metal part for my daily uses. You’re probably asking why I don’t do the opposite and use the remote control for my daily basis ? Well that’s to prevent thieves from intercepting my key fob signals, copy them and then come later and steal my car ! So to recap : I keep the spare key at home and use the main key as 2 keys : 1 for daily uses, and the 2nd as a spare key that stays attached to my body all the time ; I don’t put it in my phone or purse coz I may forget the phone/purse themselves in my locked car.

Even if you have a newer vehicle that needs the remote so that the car will start, you can still have a plain key cut so at least you can open the door to get your keys. Many places will say, oh, you have to have the remote, nope. Plus, a plain keys is easier to put in your wallet, or if you use one of the magnetic key holders, if they find it, they may open the door, but it won't start, (unless you left your keys in the car)

I used one for years without fail, but my last one made its way to my exhaust and melted:) Guess because I went over too many bumps too fast for way too long without checking on it:) Anyways, a few months ago I drilled a small hole through a piece of framing/metal underneath my car, ran a bolt through it followed by my key (drilled a hole in my key too to fit over the bolt) tighten it all up with a wingnut BAM! Fixed the issue I believe:) HA!

I do roadside assistance and help with 15+ lockouts. Toyotas are the only vehicles that do not lock when the key is in the ignition. The rest don’t and yes, no matter how old or new it is, it WILL still lock you out. I would highly suggest getting a second key because if you own an American, Japanese, German or a Korean car then chances are it could lock you out.

last summer i was with a scout troop of about 25 in Alaska. We were in a remote area doing some salmon fishing (yes, that was amazing). One of the dads locked the doors and key inside of one of the cars we were using. We were in a NON cell area that was very remote. I stepped up to the plate and took on the task of getting us in. The 1st thing i did was checked ALL the doors for a open lock. None were found. The drivers window was down about 1/4". I directed scouts to find me the perfect stick, a couple dads pulled on the glass and I very cautiously guided the stick down to the unlock button. Although they were amazed, no one really gave me credit for that magic touch and ingenuity!

BATTERY'S, ELECTRIC CARS ETC: Lithium-ion(lion): 500 to 3000+ cycles(RATINGS) Lead-acid: 200 to 1000 cycles(RATINGS) All batteries lose capacity after each charge cycle, until they reach zero capacity. lions lose at a faster rate if you do not FULLY CHARGE THEM EACH TIME!!! A lion will last LONGER than lead acid if it is fully charged EACH TIME!!! IN A CAR OR COMPUTER THAT IS DRIVEN(CHARGING) FOR 2 HOURS PER DAY, THE LION BATTERY WOULD BE FULLY CHARGED PER DAY!!! IN A CAR OR COMPUTER USED FOR 30 MINUTES PER DAY, THE LION WOULD NOT BE FULLY CHARGED AND THE LION WOULD HAVE A SHORTER LIFE/CAPACITY. THE SAME IS TRUE FOR A HYBRID OR ELECTRIC CAR. LONG TRIPS WILL PROLONG THE LIFE OF A LION BATTERY(ELECTRIC CAR) SHORT TRIPS WILL DECREASE THE LIFE OF A LION BATTERY(ELECTRIC CAR).

Hey Scotty, I actually locked the keys in my 2011 Prius for the first time since I bought it back in 2011! The keys were left in the very back corner of the hatch, which allowed the car to start and lock! I am not sure how the keyless entry detected the key enough to allow the car to start, but didn’t prevent it from locking. I’m thankful I was close to home, and a spare set could be brought to me. Do you know how this could have happened? Great videos! Thank you for saving me a ton of money over the years!!!

I purchased a similar kit, but to help others. But the only way anything is going to help you get into your own car is if it is accessible to you. Those tool sitting in your trunk will do no good with getting you back in your own car. I used to lock my keys in my car quite frequently and then I got smart (and disciplined ). I made two 3x5 cards that reminded me to put my key in my pocket before standing up. One for the windshield and one for my driver's side window. To my surprise, it only took a week to train myself and I never locked them inside again. I don't even have to do it anymore with my vehicles but I still do it by habit. Huge problems can be solved with small disciplines.Try it and see. You will shock yourself how well it really works and what little effort.

That could be done and it is a good idea in a time when it is needed. Still, I think I'm going to promote my idea of reminding the driver with flash cards to stick the key in a pocket before getting out. I didn't know if it was going to work out but I was very surprised by the good outcome.

I've done the same thing several times using a coat hanger. Once a coworker had me open her car door. After I got it open she screamed, "That's not my car! that's my car!" Pointing to another vehicle. The kicker? The two vehicles weren't even the same color. lol. Shalom/gw. BTW. NEVER put a lithium battery in anything you don't want to see burn. However LiFe batteries don't have that problem.

If you put the fob in a magnetic box you wouldn't have to break the window, the new cars all have a little button on the door handle, it would just unlock the door and push to start and see ya later!!! Or you can just have a Hyundai sonata without a immobilizer built in and it could be stolen without a key lol

I have a hidden house key in my shed. I showed my son where it was. I told him if you ever get locked out these a spare to get in the house. I also said, “This key NEVER goes inside! Open the door, and hang it back where it belongs.” Well you can probably already guess where this is going. My son called me a few months later. “Dad I got locked out of the house.” I said “No. remember there’s a spare key in the shed.” He said “The key is gone.” “How’s it gone?” He said “I can see it but can’t get to it.” “Where is it?” “It’s on the kitchen counter where I left it.”

I hid a key inside the front turn signal light on my 1971 VW Squareback. All I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver to access it from the outside. Never needed it after my wife tried to back out of the garage with the hatch open. Why was the car stuck? The latch never lined up properly again. 😅

There's an easier way. At least if its a Honda , not sure about Toyota, go to the dealer parts department , They can make you a new key , I done twice cost was $12 for a basic key. If the car is registered in your name you need your driver's license and the VIN . As long as you haven't changed the locks.

The problem with all of these new battery packs is they have PUSH button activation. Which means they easily turn on when anything from your truck, or even the cables etc included with the kit, touches the easy to turn on buttons. So your booster pack just sits there with the light on forever and you never know. THen it's dead when you need it. Poor design honestly. The worst part is they give you a satin bag to put it in......which has zero ability to resist button pushes from the exterior. Take your pack, put it in a box, keep the cables and manual separated from the battery and put it in your vehicle like that. Otherwise one wrong bump and your booster will be dead when you need it.

You dont need a "kit", go to menards where they sell doors and they have the exact same bladder bag thing in two sizes. They sell them for leveling doors when you install them yourself. Same exact thing except the menards one is actually made in Denmark for some reason....probably lasts longer than one 从中国. I have two of the smaller ones (same as in the video) they work amazing. For a wire I use a muskrat stretcher that I cut bottom stuff off....probably four times thicker than a coat hanger and works really well too.
