The early 1990s saw a culinary revolution hit New Zealand shores, one that came in the form of crispy, plump chicken wings, coated in a spicy, tangy glaze: KFC's Hot Wings.
They were an instant hit, capturing the hearts and stomachs of us as New Zealanders. Their deliciousness was amplified by a charmingly vintage commercial (voiced by the late Barry Jenkin), constantly flashing across our TV screens, ensuring the brand was firmly etched into the country's collective memory.
However, as time passed, the Hot Wings' reign began to wane. By the mid-2000s KFC introduced a new contender: Wicked Wings. These wings, while still offering that signature KFC flavour, were coated in a thicker, more intensely spiced sauce, aiming for a bolder, more adventurous taste.
Despite their absence from the menu, the legacy of KFC's Hot Wings lives on. They hold a special place in the culinary memories of many Kiwis, a reminder of a simpler time.
