You know what?… I am following Björn since the old days and it is 8 years I think from today backwards. He is fully dedicated to his profession and I whish all the naysayers and hippshooters out there at least a glimpse of this particular dedication. Instead of giving thumps down here, I guess it’ll be great if you would figure out what you are born for in this world and go do it.

The rear aerodynamic design is very clever on this car. They have fast airflow over the rear window and the lights, and the vertical area with turbulence which collects the dirt is left for less important things like the license plate.

Rear window design taken from IPace. Works a treat. In 3 years of driving an IPace (in Norway), not once have I had an issue with dirty rear screen. EV6 has used almost exactly the same design with channels through the rear roof spoiler and a sharp edge at the trailing edge of the boot. Red EV6 GT-Line is on order :D

It seems that the EV6 has the same issue as the Niro EV. My Niro EV Winter Mode seems to have done absolutely nothing over the last 2 winters and the battery does not preheat before charging either. I was hoping that Kia had learnt from the coldgate issues of the Niro EV and would implement corrections in the EV6, but it seems that they are doing the same thing in the EV6. Hopefully they will update the software to allow users to preheat the battery, or make it happen automatically when you set a charging station as a destination in the navigation software. I also agree that they should show the SoC remaining at destination in the navigation software. I really hope they get the message. Thanks for making this video, I know how much work it is 😎

I think I may have found an explanation for the cold gating; I found this in the EV6 Electric Vehicle Guide under 'winter mode' setting: 'However, the mode is not operated to ensure driving distance when the battery level is low.' It doesn't say how it decides if the battery level is too low.

Wehen the battery is cold gate, it is perhaps a better Plan to load to a higher state of charge. Because once the battery is warm you could charge faster even at 60 or 70% than with a cold battery at 5%. So you loose time at every beginning of the charging. . So in Winter ist could be better to stay longer and charge more in a stop and try to do less stops.

I know new EV6s have a pre-conditioning,and that winter modes, if you're heating cabin, will take all the heat from battery, so prior to update where pre-conditioning was added, you had to turn off heat on cabin (or if you could, the heat scavanging), and then yo-yo car to heat it up (Floor it, then regen hard, etc). Not sure how it works since updated, but I've seen in youtube that pre-conditioning did gork. (but didn't see how well on that video)

It is quite common that people leave their cars to charge to 100% on CCS chargers. (referring to 14:51) One time I had to top up 15 mins to reach the next charger (where I would stay a lot longer) and there was a vw e-up and an IONIQ charging at the only 2 hpc in the region. I asked the IONIQ driver if he could let me charge (he was at 93%) and he said no, he wants 100%. So I had to wait a lot more than I was planning on.

Thank you for the test - as always great job. Regarding "coldgating" - I winder how would EV6 battery temps behave without heat pump (not in Norway, but some other countries get it as a oaid option)? Drop in range, but reduced time when charging? Could be worth it in countries with well developed charging infrastructure. Second observation - why would heater remain at 24 degrees while heating up battery? I would expect it to get warmer to reduce time neededd to bring battery to optimum temperature. And last but not least - this car is "guzzler" in anything but optimum conditions (city drive in warm summer). Really sorry.

The EV6 has an unusual charging curve as it always starts slowly up to 20% and then ramps up thereafter. See the charging curves by Andreas Haehnel. It seems that the EV6 should be charged to 80% as it will be able to charge at 150 kW up to 80%. When you think you should leave, then you should actually stay as high speeds will be achieved at much higher SoC than we are used to. High DC speed at low SoC, and low speed at high SoC, doesn't apply to the EV6.
@Old-Bald-and-Grumpy

How about turning down/off the cabin heater for the last 20-30 minutes before arriving at the charger. The cabin will stay warm for a while, and you can use the seat and steering wheel heaters for comfort. The heat pump won't pull heat from the battery pack and enable you to arrive with a higher battery temperature.

How about the car comany programms an viable battery management system. Or at least provides a button "Preheat Battery". "Turning on ond off heat" while drinving without heat.... It amazes me how much the BEV community is willing to take. If there would be problems like this in combustion engine cars nobody would take it. They would return the car and demand repair. We need to push the car companys to build better cars and provide an easy user experience. They are already good, but stuff like this and that the comunity has to think about "workarounds" is simply bad. It needs to be simple. If I set up my car to 22°c, I want it to be 22°c and a preheated battery at the charging point if I use the navigation system and its set up, that i will charge in 20 Minutes.

The heat scavaging from the battery is not the problem. Likely no more than 2 to 4kW of power is needed for cabin heating, and heat losses in the motor, electronics and battery are usually more than that. At 90km/h and 21kwh/100 km your average power output is near 19kw. If Overal effiiency is 90% it can sustain 2kwh heat scavaging without reducing the temperature to much. (The battery mass has a lot of stored energy when at temperature) the more likely problem, is the reason why it cools down that much in short amount of time and why there is a lot of difference between min and max temperarture in the cells is that likely has low insulation arround the battery. A cell map temperature reading should make this visible.

Bjørn, would you pick the EV6 over the TM3? I like the more classic-car feel to it, but in regards of range and specs it seems to be overtaken by the Model 3. Is there significant difference in regards of noise if you mainly drive at 50-120 km/t? In Denmark the LR and EV6 AWD - with some extras like HUD and so one - is about the same price, but the TM3 with the advantages of used models with only a few km's in them at a fair price on the market.

I'm also trying to decide between the EV6 GT line and TM3 LR. I change my mind every day. I wish I could test each car for 2-3 days, and not only 30min...not enough to make a decision...not when you have to take charging in consideration. But since most of my trips are 200km - 400km I'm thinking Tesla is better due to the charging network. But maybe the fast charging of the EV6 makes up for that.

I didn't think the "Winter Mode" kicked in until -10c, which is madness if true.
@ranualfhunter1869
@ranualfhunter1869 2 года назад
You would also think that at this price the car(roughly 500k) would come with a battery heater as standard? And that it`d simply sort the coldgate problem. I know you have to pay (£879) for the 39kw Kona, but get if for "free" in the 64KW kona, as standard.. It is just weird as the Kia EV6 is on the luxury end of the price list, and they (Kia & Hyundai) both did testing there over the summer and winter months of last year.
@averagesimguy598
@averagesimguy598 2 года назад
@Ranualf Hunter I'm sure it has a battery heater, he states multiple times that it's using power from the charger to heat the battery. The issue is that it scavenges too much heat between charges. In my eyes with "winter mode" enabled, it should leave the heat in the battery pack and not scavenge it.
@ranualfhunter1869
@ranualfhunter1869 2 года назад
@@averagesimguy598 Ah thanks man, i didn't hear him comment on the heater, but yes, it is drawing too much heat(Like the tesla does), and that they will be patched, which is cool.

Does this particular model have a heat pump? If so is it not an efficient one? I think cars like this that don't have a heat pump aren't good enough for areas where it gets really cold. They may be perfect for warmer afensich as in most Southern parts of the US etc. If it doesn't have one and you have to get it as an add on or on their higher trim then that is something potential buyers might have to keep in mind because tour whole trip seemed very inefficient var/battery wise. But it does give us a glimpse as to what to expect with this car in the winter months.

That was the pre facelift M3 right? Wasnt that also without heat pump? New ones all have it, so it would now most likely achieve something like 12 hrs, I would guess.

Battery heat scavenging, although it is very good thing, is a kind of cheating :) Consumption reported by car doesn't include energy spent on heating the battery when charging, so real consumption on that route is higher.

I have a new Kia EV6 GT line rwd purchased and I become the EV6 in february 2022. I'm scared of this. All the tests on youtube for the EV6 are very positief. But what is going on? What can I expect? Are the problems in february solved? Has there been an software update by Kia in februari 2022? Can I cancle the sale? Is the loading problem also applicable with a home loading unit? And, are charging stations displayed correctly during navigation? Oké, it is not an MBUX system from Mercedes, but I hope, the Kia system will be good working. And is an full loaded battery in a winter with an average temperature of great infuence on the range of the EV6? I hope if someone has answers on my questions. Sorry for my bad English,.... I'm Dutch.
