Us Tubers appreciate your amazing dedication and detailed videos. You have saved me a lot of money and put confidence in people. In fact I would not have considered changing sealed transmission oil until I heard your concern with so little mileage. I see you provide friendly personal assistance in the RU-vid notes. Look forward to more Sorento maintenance videos. Thank You Richard !!!!

Valvoline guarantees OEM compatibility and that it will not void your warranty. Here is the spec sheet with the information from Valvoline: content.valvoline.com/pdf/maxlife_atf.pdf Thanks

Just did my 2011 Sorento SX 3.5 V6 with 140xxx miles. Fluid looked pretty good....but it only drained exactly 3.8 ltrs (1 gallon) while warm, sitting on flat driveway. The quantity I drained out is what I put back in (one 1 gal jug....3.8 ltrs). Side fill level after cycling through the gears running and sitting for 30 minutes was just at the right "slow stream" level...so its filled to the right level verifying what came out was the right volume to go back in. Not sure how you got 5 ltrs to come out....I'll change again after the family vacation.

Was your engine idling or off when you checked the level? There seems to be some confusion. I always checked level with engine off after it was up to operating temp

I just did my son's 2013 Elantra using your video as a reference. Thanks for posting it. The fluid after 40,000 mile was jet black. I did chicken out and purchased OEM SP4-M as it's still under warranty to 60,000 miles. Another thing people need to realize is these new transmissions don't have a serviceable filter.....all the more reason for more frequent fluid changes.....do you know why the factory ATF fluid is so dark after the first drain? I did a complete flush using the ATF return line....now it's nice and red......at 60,000 I will use the MaxLife ATF at less then 1/2 the price......Thanks again.

Did you clean the magnetic plug? There are clutch plates in the transmission I am thinking the clutch material over time wears off and contaminates the oil. Though I have been told the clutch material is harmless I like to get it out and have clean fluid instead. Thanks.
@dm19609721
@dm19609721 8 лет назад
Hi Richard....thanks for replying. I should have prefaced my comment that yes I drained the oil first, cleaned the plug, filled the transmission and continued to flush it using the return line. The dealer ATF SP4-M is $16 Canadian or about $12 US a quart.....which for me is outrageous. MaxLife ATF is about 50% of the price but as I said the car is still under warranty and was too chicken to take a chance just to save $50. The Maxlife ATF in the US does say it is SP-IV compliant but the Canadian labeling only mentions SP-III. I flushed out 8 quarts which cost me about $100 US....where as the MaxLife would have cost me about $50 US. When it's out of warrant I will do another flush using Maxlife ATF and will change it annually. I agree with you 100% when the automakers say fluid for life is because the want the transmission to break and then you are faced with a $3,000 repair bill or replace the car. I look at it as a $40 annual maintenance cost which will give me longevity. Even if the dealer was charging $219 for a complete flush I would get it done every 25-30K miles......$219 pales in comparison in having to spend $3,000 for a rebuild. I'm like you, I will be driving old cars because I prefer the transmission dip stick and some sort of filtration system. They build engines to go 200,000 miles, why not transmissions.

Mechanics tend to see as a negative thing that these cars don’t have a stick to check the gearbox oil. Draining this to be checked is not possible on used cars that you are considering to purchase. Great vid.

In Europe nobody bothers (at least in my area) tho chang the transmision fluid. it is true that 95% drives a manual transmision. Nice video men

+Adam Budai Most people here are driving automatic transmissions and the majority never even think about changing their transmission fluid. Manual transmissions also have fluid and I believe it also should be changed once in while too. Thanks for watching.

Richard - Important notice, Kia requires the engine running while checking the level. If engine is off it will appear as if you overflilled. I noticed the MS manual is not clear but other years of this same transmission does state clearly to leave engine running then hoist up and remove cover and check for thin stream running. may want to update your video? thanks. would love to see how you change the rear spark plugs on our 3.3 GDI case you decide on another video.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 8 лет назад
Thank you for the feedback. I will take that into consideration. I have not had an issue with doing it the with the engine off but I will try it the other way next time. All I can say is that the spark plugs are rated for 100,000 miles and after looking at the engine I am very glad that it will be a while before I have to do it. Thanks.

Dear friend, I am from Iraq, I own a 2011 Sorento, I have a problem with the automatic transmission when driving the car at a speed of 60 mph and pressing the gas pedal quickly, the RPM will rise up to 5, but the car remains fixed at 60 mph, there is no drag or Torque force in the car engine🙏

@@richardlloydusa No, dear friend, you haven't lost the oil anymore, 123,000 miles have been reached. I'm afraid to go to the service centers. I'm afraid that there is some damage inside the transmission and I must replace it completely? Thank you my friend for the advice I really appreciate it❤️☺️
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
Check the level and perhaps empty out the old fluid and replace it with new fluid. It can hurt to do that and filter out the old fluid through a rag and look for large metal fragments or any material that is not fluid. There should not be any debris in the fluid but I'm sure it will be dirty. Try it after the fluid change and if it's still slipping then you may need to service the transmission. Just so you know transmissions have clutch plates that do eventually wear out as well as many components that can fail like solenoids etc. Good luck Sir. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

@@richardlloydusa Thanks but there are not helpful as you may think. In the car manual, there is nothing about changing the gearbox oil. Is that mean we should not change the gearbox oil at all. and we have to change it. Do we have to use the same oil for gearbox and transmission? or everyone has different oil.

Is this the same transmission that is in the 2012 Sedona? I need to change my parents fluid and want to make sure I'm draining and filling in the right locations.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 7 лет назад
It may be. I can't confirm for sure. Check your owners manual for the fluid type and amounts and then have a look at it and see if it compares to what you see in the video. KIA and Hyundai (Same company) use the same transmission in many of their vehicles. Thanks.

It says to replace gasket before reinstalling drain plug. Are they talking about the gasket for the pan?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 7 лет назад
They are referring to the aluminum washer. I have used the same one six times without incident. If it is not damaged I don't see any reason not to use it again. When you torque it right (35.4 ft/lbs) it does the job fine. Just make sure you check it for damage (cracks or splits) as long as it is solid you should be fine. Thanks.

There is an internal steel mesh filter which requires you to disassemble the transmission to replace. KIA does not recommend replacing it. Thanks.
