I just want to say I appreciate the videos . Even though I never have repaired a single circuit board in my life . I like to tinker , just don’t know enough for this sort of thing . So I enjoy watching your videos . Good vibes .
Thanks to you I was given a blown kicker like this one to trash I believe its the 1200.1 version but I watch your videos and was able to replace the mosfets and the amp has been working perfect for 2yrs now. These amps are a beast sounds really good
TIP141 are Darlington transistors with built in resistors so the testers sometimes have a hard time. Hfe is in simple terms: if you want a collector current of 1A and you have a transistor with hfe 100 you must put a minimum of 10mA into the base. If the transistor has hfe 200 you only need 5mA base current or with 10mA base current you get 2A at the collector if of course the surrounding parts can provide it. There are many other factors but this is how i can keep it in my head :) To make things funnier Hfe is NOT a constant. It is dependent to collector current, temperature etc.. So check first at what conditions the part is specified in the datasheet. The testers are checking hfe usually at a miniscule base current so what they show is just a rough estimate. As these parts are dirt cheap and under heavy stress it is always good to change them anyway as you did.
And the world is right again. These edited videos are some of my favorites. I wonder however if an Ultrasonic machine would help in cleaning these boards? Maybe offering a conformal coating service would be another way to increase the longevity of these Amplifiers along with adding another way to generate another revenue stream perhaps. Anyone have any long term experience with marine amps and their coatings? Are they more trouble then they are worth? Or do they really work to extended the lifetime in a humid environment? I have not heard anything about it either way.
HFE is the ratio of current reqd at the "gate" of a BJT versus the current flowing from "source" to "drain" they work on current instead of voltage. Fets work in the same way, but current is so small it is hard to be accurate. Its much easier to determine a threshold voltage for a few vs. It's threshold current. Hope this helps...
I had a Carver PMA-2100 IIRC ..back in the mid 90's, the ground wire inside the amp melted in half and I tossed it in the trash... I was clueless about repair, Or the thought that if I had it still today..I would have it displayed on a wall in my home.. giant regret in my life!
I wonder if that corrosion was caused by condensation from being in a car year round through hot and cold temps or if it was exposed to water like from a bad seal on a car Trunk or boot....
@@wilbatprojectscollegeandtr4215 u will be shocked wiring the zx2500.1 to 1 ohm the power is makes I know ppl that run these at .5 ohm also but they get extremely hot and in a hurry even at 1 ohm they run way more warmer I would suggest looking into boat fans as soon as u wire to 1 ohm most ppl take the bottom plate off or make a replacement plate with about 6 to 8 fans 4 fans pushing in air 2 fans pulling out the hot air it will def save ur amp using fans.
@@barevids I have a 5ch. Memphis Audio PRX700.5. It overheated and stopped playing. There was little, if any smoke. But, you could smell the burning electronics from it. In your opinion, would it be worth fixing? Generally, how much does a repair on that kind of amp cost?
I have a question anyone I have the same amp 1500 w am really bad naming those parts so am sorry you guys see those yellow circles like big batteries there are 8 of them together mine blow one of them so much smoke came out I have it connected to a cvx I have 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee summit I have small cheap amp it’s working now it didn’t do nothing but when the kicker amp got installed it’s blow out is it fixable or is trash ?
I know this is an old post but I need help. I have a kicker 400.4 that shuts down below 13.1 volts. I've tested just about everything on this amp. It still does it. When powered at 9.6 volts on the test bench absolutely nothing. I've replaced all the caps. 2 coils. Tested all the mosfets. I can't find this one. Any help would be gratefull. Don't want to trash it.
You need to be looking at the tl494 voltages. Sadly doing all the caps fets and coils was a waste of time haha they would never cause this. It will be an auxiliary supply voltage issue or remote turn on circuit issue.
Can u tell me what would cause pin 3 on the test high On the power supply ic? I've tested all fets there testing fine. It's in protect. This is a kicker zx1000.1 I'm working on.
@@barevids using BJTs as voltage regulators isn't that what typically korean big power boards use ? This zx series of kicker amp are considered korean correct or no?
thats why i dispise surface mount parts for car audio..I swear .. the solder pads are too small ..in car environment there will be isues from fluctuation of temp and humidity . add vibration from car audio bass and its a guaranteed failure sooner or later. mostly sooner. Lets build with through hole designs again... who agrees with me?
All modern car's running charging systems (alternators or starter-generators on hybrids) at 14,4 Volts. Does this mean, that Kicker Amps only can be used in older cars ? Arrrgggg. Ok this was an issue and not a feature. Next time i watch the video completely before writing a comment. :-P
most real people cant do 14.4 volts so why do you care ?...12 volts makes more sense. most batteries add up to 12 volts.... not 14.4...i cannot stand 14.4 volt ratings on amps..it's very unrealistic
There is a strange mystical device known to heathen folk as an alternator. Some say it can be used to charge your battery. It is fabled that a battery will be charged with current when the output of the mystical alternator is 2v above the float voltage of the battery. Demons say that a lead acid battery floats on average around 12.4 volts. They also say that cars come with these mystical alternator devices.. and that when the engine is running, the car system voltage will be 14.4v! I have never seen one of these prophesied alternator devices. I believe it to be the talk of madmen and witchcraft. To many for too long have been fooled into thinking a car electrical system charges at 14.4v. The gods would never allow it. I shake my fist and spit upon the heathens that dare speak of this foul heresy... for no man's standard car could ever reach 14.4v. BEWARE THE ALTERNATOR. Quake in fear upon the utterance of its name. Thou shalt repent and burn in hell, should the tail be retold as gospel. A fate worse than death, I shall bring upon thee. Damnation, fire and brimstone. 14.4v! Remember, the valley of darkness awaits. The number of the beast! Repent! Repent! (Sets self on fire outside pizza-hut) xx
Do you have an email that I can reach you at to possibly bug you about a couple knowledge questions? It would be very much appreciated. I tried to find you on social media. Like instagram or such with no luck! Thanks!
Good job. Happy days.. Tried something new. I watched this video with ear buds... Annnd now id like to ship you a nice DIGITAL clock.. lol. 🕰tic-tock. Tic-toc. Tic-toc. The entire video. In my left ear.. ha ha. Still really enjoy your videos. 👍
@@barevids no doubt. you, sir, were in The Zone.. Lazer focused. Only thing that could have broken that was maybe a capacitor popping on your bench. 🧨 lol.
