I want ANYTHING that can take TERA's combat and bring at least Blizzard's mechanical insight to that design. Hard-Lock spellclickers are not bad, but there is so much polish you could add to an MMO IF you could take basically what TERA put forward with the Brawler as a class design. I dont really qualify TERA or Blade and Soul as a different style of spellclicker. Hardlock vs Softlock really doesnt change a ton mechanically in MMOs until you really begin fully integrating Fighting game mechanics.

rofl..."safe" You might want to update this one since Jacobs clearly hoodwinked the investors in one of the most controversial screwovers weve seen. He took the Camelot Unchained money and developed a different game with it in secrecy. I see MMO on Kickstarter or crowdfunding is higher risk, I have backed many games nearly all single player with Grim Dawn being one of my favs, but the problem i see with a mmo is they get funded they release a game but that is only the start if the game does not gain traction they will not last long

@ragzaugustus
@ragzaugustus 5 лет назад
It's a shitty investment really, the returns are rarely any good. Which you can see, in the fact that nobody's making NEW MMOs outside of kickstarter. And frankly, I don't think any of the games on your list will ever "fulfill their promises", Shroud of the Avatar is a staggering failure in every single way, all of them and has never made any money at all. I doubt any of the others will. Free2Play MMOs that go all out "mobile games style" whale fishing? Oh they make plenty of cash, whales are whales. Paid MMOs? There's only one left and that's World of Warcraft. So any of them were you said "paid subscription based" is already a failure, from day one.

@@ragzaugustus PVP in mobile is exploitive as hell but the F2P games I've played on console/PC aren't all evil.... Warframe, DCUO, STO, Skyforge, Neverwinter, D&DO, even to a small extent TESO is better than any Mobile trash fire..... just cus a game has MTX in it don't necessarily mean it's evil, neverwinter is a great game.... what I find more of a risk is you spend $60 on the game then have to turn around and spend another $15 a month just to play.....like FF15 ARR, maybe the game is as good as people claim but a double paywall turns me off cus that's too much of a risk on a IP I've never liked [never liked the FF games but FF14 ARR seems like a decent game, i mean i have liked the art in their games but just not the games themselves eh] also for me F2P MMO's like DCUIO and STO are almost the only way now to get a RPG experience

Hey just wanted to correct something. You said for Star Citizen that Evocati is how you access the more persistent world and that's just not true at all. Evocati are hard-core community testers selected by the Devs. They get limited run time on very broken builds. What's live right now is the fully persistent game that you can play for your $45 backing. You can not pay more money to get into a better or more complete version of the game. That version is available to everyone right now. TL:DR - $45 nets you the whole kit and caboodle for the Persistent Universe as far as it is, which you can play right now. $65 gets you the previous and the single player Squadron 42. You cannot pay to get into Private Test Universe or Evocati - both of which run limited broken build versions of the game WHEN they are even online. Once a patch goes live those shut down.

Solid and informative video! A couple small clarifications though! Star Citizen actually does have a playable test bed. The “Persistent Universe“ is the....well the universe and it comes with the base starter package at $45. The PTU (public test universe) is their test server (like Blizzards PTR), where they test major patches before release on the live servers. Evocati are like the testers of the PTU, so they get the buggiest worst builds. Those are community members who report bugs and help out, but they have to be invited and need to sign an NDA in order to join Evocati. The Concierge (big spenders) just get a couple cosmetics and early access to the PTU (theres a couple other ways to get early PTU access also). The PU (Persistent Universe) is where everyone spends their time and is available to all. Currently only 1 system with 2 landable planets, about 10 moons, satellites, space stations and other stuff. (This system will be pretty much finished early next year and we will see the next system likely later next year. ). There are missions, trading, mining, stuff like that but it is still only s fraction of their planned scope.Their plan was to do the most complicated system first, so they’d have the tools developed to more easily proc gen the rest of the planets (with an artists touch so its not completely procedurally generated). Also Squadron 42 (the separate single player game) has always been a major goal (with some backing purely for that). Squadron 42 is currently planned to hit beta Q2 of next year. Star Citizen is still at least several years out though. For the curious, they have a youtube channel that releases weekly shows, showcasing what they are working on. (Highly recommend for anyone interested in game development). Vast majority of the backers still believe in the project (though there is a disgruntled vocal minority). It is not without problems, but it’ll be cool to see the campaign release in the next year or so. (Id recommend checking it out on Twitch if you’re curious as to what the gameplay is actually like at this state!)

Ok about the squadron 42, it was in the kickstarter. There isn't much of a question as to why they're making it. Originally the game was going to have you play the single player and once you are done get sent into the persistence universe, now they've just been separated into two games. Edit: after watching you're whole section on SC it's clear you need to do a bit more looking into. You don't need to be evocati or concierge or spend that extra $10 for access to the PTU to test the game. Those only give you early access (to often buggy messes that a lot of people don't like to deal with) and generally the PTU opens up to all backers after a week or so. The PTU is only the stepping stone before a live release.

A Pathfinder RPG with no Classes? This is a betrayal!
@UltimateCarl
@UltimateCarl 5 лет назад
Seriously, how the hell did this project even get off the ground? A Pathfinder game with no classes, a PvP focus, and buy-to-play-with-subscription? You mean arguably the single most crunchy, class rules-heavy tabletop game still releasing books in the market today, that Pathfinder? A tabletop game, where 95% of campaigns lack any kind of inter-player combat at all? The one that's easy to play cheaply when only one of your friends owns the books or if you just use the official freebies from the company online? There's wanting to try something new and then there's just completely ignoring the source material... Not to mention, I mean... Paizo isn't WotC or Blizzard rich, but they're not exactly a tiny company either. They really couldn't put *any* kind of extra funds into this game? Graphics aren't everything, sure, but holy shit that character select screen at 34:38 is just embarrassing! I was aware of the game as a concept, but I had no idea it was officially released already, and now I'm glad so I didn't get all hype first.

What pisses me off the most is that very early on they had a proof of concept build that showed the Iconic Characters walking through a Dungeon. Things looked OK enough from a graphics point of view, and it was a Dungeon (Temple really), so cool ! Then I played the early Beta and found out there are zero dungeons, zero caves, nothing like the concept demo and the character avatars are nowhere as cool-looking as the ones in the test demo.
@TZG41
@TZG41 5 лет назад
other commenters probably already commented this but you got some things wrong about star citizen, you cant really buy yourself in the more restricted, newer game versions, the players are mostly choosen by how much they play and how many bugs they report. Concierge members get acces to the PTU versions, but they are only some weeks ahead of the normal version, and most of the time after 2 or 3 weeks it gets opened for everyone, it seems more like a small gift, and less of a reason to pay so much. You cant really pay 10€ to get into it, maybe you confused that with the access to squadron 42 or some older beta access thing they removed and gave to everyone. The evocati are a handfull of testers, that are under nda and get the most recent version that is often very buggy (seen on leaked footage), and probably also dont have a real persistent universe yet, only some more advanced features. I have my own hopes and fears about the whole projekt expecally with the monetisation, but at least getting into the beta is farly easy and as much as you can spend on the game, it is not required for full access.

Knowing Star Citizen very well and listening to him showing N.S. research was sloppy or inexistent, made me put the whole video in perspective. How can I trust his opinion on the other games I don't know after being so wrong about SC? Voted down because of this.
@Fractured676
@Fractured676 5 лет назад
It was clear he didn't know much about SC. I'm fine if you find it sketchy, but at least be informed if you're going to make a video on it. He made it sound like all you could do it go on Arccorp, and theres no sandbox? While its not nearly as big as planned, there are several planets, space stations, and space areas to go to. There's a ton to explore, which basically meets the "sandbox" definition. You can fight, trade, talk, group up, do some scripted missions, some non-scripted missions. Yet he made it sound like all you could do is walk around on a single city (Which happens to be a city planet). The game has finally been settling down with what I assume the near completion of the engine, as actual content has been coming out quite often. I'm still not 100% that it will get launched in a super playable state anytime soon. But my friend and I enjoy the time we play in the alpha, which means if it does actually launch, oh man will it be sexy. Also, what is with the "Why are they making a single player game?" question? Was literally promised in the Kickstarter itself. That the game will come with a single player, and a persistent universe. And that Squadron 42 (The SP) can lead into the persistent universe, even though I'm not sure if they still plan on this.

Thanks for the great video! I've never played elite dangerous, but it was interesting that you said it was niche and "catered to it's audience," said in a way that came across as a criticism. To me, that's incredibly encouraging to hear -- a huge positive. Too many games try to cater to too many folks then end up either over reaching and screwing up core audience objectives or watering things down where it doesn't scratch any itch for anyone. I think the power of Kickstarter for games is the ability to cater to niche audiences that aren't served by behemoth game publishers. If you aren't into the big titles from EA or Activision, then your alternative is an 8-bit Indy game? Bleh...

I've been playing Elite Dangerous for around 6 months now. It's not quite an MMO in the normal sense of the term. N.S. is correct in saying that at it's heart, this is a space flight simulator. It also has a bit of a steep learning curve as simulator games often do (although they recently added some tweaks to make it a bit less rough). It isn't for everyone but it really does scratch an itch for a certain kind of sci-fi fan. It's a bit of a love or hate it kind of game I suppose. Elite is better described as space flight game with a persistent online world that is impacted by the players, but more on a micro-level than say in EVE (player activity shifts NPC faction influence, commodity pricing, mining resource depletion and such and there's occasional community events that can impact the way the game develops). Because their game uses a peer-to-peer structure for multiplayer interaction, even populated systems tend to be fairly heavily instanced. While this has obvious drawbacks in terms of making EVE-style gigantic player battles impossible (due to the sheer number of connections that would require), it means that Frontier's servers don't have to manage a ton of data and can be relatively lightweight (meaning that there's no subscription and the in-game store sticks to cosmetics like paint jobs and doesn't have pay-to-win rubbish). PvP tends to be small scale. Capital ships are not in the game except as NPCs currently, with player ships essentially ranging from large fighters and space "delivery vans" to large sub-capital ships topping out around 200m in length. Players can compete for control of systems and space stations, but they do it via NPC proxies and they do it by completing (or intentionally failing) missions (questing in MMO terms) in populated part of the galaxy (what EVE would call high-sec and low-sec). Most anarchy (i.e. lawless) systems are simply unpopulated (although a few are governed by lawless factions like pirates, making them great ports of call for criminal players). The areas outside human colonization are not a null-sec PvP playground like in EVE but instead are a vast empty space devoid of humanity, waiting to be explored. The wider galaxy is staggeringly huge and quiet compared to the populated area around Earth. Players in game often refer to it as the Black. Some players will head out into the Black and travel for months (even years) before returning back to civilization to sell off their exploration data and reconnect with "civilization". The game has an active community on PC, Xbox and PS4 (with the PC community being the largest and the much younger PS4 community being the smallest). A single persistent game world is shared between all 3 platforms BUT (big but), players of each platform can only interact with players from that platform. For example, I'm part of a mixed PC/PS4 squadron and while we work together on our political influence goals, I can't fly together with folks on a different platform. I'm told the VR implementation of the game is excellent if you have a good PC VR setup. Coming out of hyperspace (they call it witchspace in game) right beside a massive star in VR for the first time is apparently kind of scary. There is no PS VR support although some folks hope that the PS5 and it's VR kit will be able to handle the game. The three modes of play mean that players who don't care for PvP often opt to load up in solo or private mode to avoid griefers. "Gentlemanly" pirates (who are role-players and demand token amounts of cargo if you play along) do exist, as does a substantial honorable consensual PvP player population, but folks running big expensive freighters will still often just run in solo or private. Playing in open means you are consenting to possible PvP and you should build your ships for it (e.g. using a tougher, heavily defended ship able to cut and run rather than a fragile ship focused purely on cargo capacity). Some self-policing large private groups exist for players who want to play in a populated world without PvP. The open world mode is still pretty quiet outside of the most focal star systems, in part due to the sheer size of the sandbox (the entire Milky Way), the population being spread across 3 platforms and the instancing mechanics. Most gameplay tends to be PvE focused, either for personal gain or trying to influence the NPC factions in the game world (largely for role-playing "it's my team" reasons). Some style of cooperative game play kind of emerged on their own, such as fuel ratting and seal hulling (think AAA rescue service provided by friendly players who will fly out to your stranded ship and refuel you or fix your battered ship after a mishap). Xeno biological and archeological study is another play style that emerged and the primary player group behind it even has a megaship (think mobile space dock) that was built with the help of the entire player community. The best way to get player interaction is to find a player squadron that engages in the style of game play you like. The main region of human colonization (referred to as the Bubble) is a few hundred light-years across with about 19000 star systems. The vast majority of the trade (aka. space trucking), piracy, bounty hunting and even mining happens in that tiny pocket about 150LY in radius around Earth's solar system. Apart from a few outlying population centres, the vast majority of the Milky Way is uninhabited (there are two alien races, one hostile and relatively nearby and one so far apparently dead and showing up as archeological sites). Most of the interactions with sentient alien stuff is not that far from human space (so far) and fighting off hostile alien incursions that wreck space stations (and repairing those stations after) is another popular activity. The galaxy has 400 BILLION star systems in ED (with probably several trillion planets and moons), only 0.036% of which have been explored as of April 2019. Sounds like a tiny number until you realize that's 144 million star systems explored and mapped out by players who are into the exploration side of the game. Given that the first person to discover and map a system gets their name permanently displayed when any player visits, a lot of players enjoy playing as explorers and discoverers. As I mentioned, some wander off into the Black for long periods of time. Even if they were in open mode, when there's over 50 star systems for each human currently alive on the planet, the odds of actually bumping into anyone else unless you are close to civilization or near a popular point of interest are very low. Space tourism is a variation on exploration. It is done either for the fun of seeing pretty eye-candy (some of the nebulae are quite beautiful) or using passenger liners and carrying NPC mission givers to their chosen destinations (which are usually eye-candy spots). A large paid expansion is due next year and the game developer appears to have a road map for at least the next three years so the game's likely to stick around for a while.

@@Byssbod Regarding Camelot... Alpha/beta footage doesn't look bad to me, BUT even if it did, the developers have been very clear that they are optimizing for PERFORMANCE -- they can support hundreds (thousands actually) of players in the same area running around, battling, casting spells. They are also focused on physics and object interaction. Heck, they built their own game engine from scratch to be able to do that specifically. Can ANY other game of any budget do near that today even with worse graphics? Personally, I appreciate the balance they are trying to strike. Gameplay over graphics any day of the week for me. Of course, to be determined if they'll deliver on gameplay, but we'll see.

I don't think city of titans will be made anytime soon, every update is a giant wall of text with occasionally some asset attached but not very often. Star Citizen needs a ridiculous amount of funding every month to keep it in production, if funding were to drop even a little the project will probably collapse, they are addicted to throwing around and wasting money.

Tackling Star Citizen is always difficult because everybody seems to have a different idea what it is and why it is good or bad. Heck, people cant even agree on how long the game is in development. Is it 8? is it 6? or only 4? People have different approaches on how to value the project, therefore they come to different conclusions. CIG's initial promises and scope were altered a lot throughout the years, but not because it is taking so long, and more because based on the amount of funding rolling in as well as the tech that was being developed and gave them rise to new possibilities they wanted to utilize. They always adapted to the best of their vision and core promises, which are: - Sci-Fi simulation games (Singleplayer and Multiplayer, Multiplayer was shortly after scoped into an MMO) - great immersion - great level of detail - great scale - scaling production and features based on funding in order to create the best game possible - long term investment into the future to support the game as long as possible Personally, I think they always made their decisions with these ideas in mind since the kickstarter and stayed true to them. Large part of Star Citizen is still a research project, which I find very interesting. I knew back in 2013, that this would need some large investment into new software technologies and with hardware starting to slow down, potentionally seeing software to finally give time to breath and shine was my main reason why I supported the project. And from what they have accomplished so far makes me very happy. Is it a game? Barely. Most of the stuff we have is just there to give a first impression of what the game might be one day and to give back to the backers. So, besides the tech, it is still very lackluster. And buggy. But the potential is definitly there and I hope that once they got their server tech up and running, that gameplay development will start to be prioritized more and more. And also dont forget that they are working on the singleplayer game which we have barely seen anything of so far. So who knows what they are working on on that.
@ScottWinterringer
@ScottWinterringer 5 лет назад
main issue is the StarCitizen game did not have a full development team at start. it all had to ramp up to be what it is. The game is also actually making new tech. no asset flips here, no game reused game tech for the most part. they gutted cryengine and remaade it almost entirely. now its on lumberyards version. (64 bit code too) lets not waste time discussing the news plagiarism of its issues and failure to provide truth and instead push half truth....
@SETHthegodofchaos
@SETHthegodofchaos 5 лет назад
@@ScottWinterringer Is it really an issue? Its an important factor to keep in mind which was vital in how the project evolved. How do you scope a game when funding keeps rolling in, but you cant be sure that it will be a steady income? Do you go large? Then you might risk overscoping and failing! Do you go small? Then you will disappoint a lot of people because they expected more and your reputation will suffer for the future. There is no real win other than to do the best and take the advantage of the unique opportunity provided. I think they made the right choice in 2014/2015 to rescope the game entirely into something much larger. And that also helped to keep funding rolling in, because there would be always something great upcomming. I am aware of the rest, so I am not sure what your point is by listing them. I also dont quite understand what you mean by your last sentence.

I love the concept of timed campaign in Crowfall and frankly i always wanted to play a game like that (not sure why other MMOs don't do that), the idea that you can play in a world for several weeks or months then it ends prevents things from stagnating and also makes sure a select few of players don't accumulate too much power and stuff, sure maybe some stuff carry over (i.e when you go the "eternal realm" you keep some items or rewards) but it allows for a lot ideas that are rarely seen in other MMOs (like a world ending event, or real death where this version of your playable character in this specific world could die for good after failing certain parameters, ....etc).

Pretty cool video! and nice to see SC didn't get an F lol anyway, some tips on SC, you only need the starter pack with a starter ship to test the game, you don't need to be an evocati or a concierge, the PTU is done by waves, first wave is evocati, second wave is for subscribers/concierge, and then it is open to all to test. the PTU patch then moves over to the PU. The PU is always open to every backer.

It's telling but no surprise that not one crowd funded MMOs after years of development across multiple projects has even produced a single launched title. Let alone a successful one. But customization is a big part of MMORPGs - looking at all the different backgrounds and variants of just a Pathfinder - Kingmaker Sorcerer is mouth-watering. The only reason Pathfinder is on hold for me is the severly bugged release and the Kingdom part being fleshed out. Not being able to freely combine a certain number of skill trees/a max. amount of skill points in any varity of skill trees in a game that calls itself Elder Scroll Online is a sad joke. Also the RPG part, most MMOs are really just Hack&Slay-Multiplayer, large scale PVP in GW2 for example has next to no backstory. The lame singleplayer stories that are attached to the games where every player is THE hero to save the world is another minus. Finally there are no good D&D MMORPGs (D&D is very dated, Neverwinter has its issues and Pathfinder Online was born dead).

@@frankmeyer8593 I do think DD0 out of those is the best one. Sure the graphics are very dated, but in an MMO i dont think graphics should matter too much. And the classes (*customizable* classes) are part of the very essence of d&d/path

I have one friend that I've never played ED with, that i sometimes see login through Steam. A lot of the "hardcore" or early ED crowd that play religiously, bought it long before the Steam launch and never added it, as there is no advantage over the standalone launcher.

Indeed! There was an expedition of players across the galaxy during the early part of the year that had over 13000 participants and that certainly wasn't the entire player base. Some events have pulled in 50k+ participants. While Frontier doesn't publish player numbers, it seems like the active players numbers are probably around 100k+, with tens of thousands of hardcore players. Still, given the sheer number of star systems in the game where players could be, it being on three platforms and it using an instancing system, one normally only tends to run into players in busier systems (except perhaps your own squadron mates if you are in a squadron that has a BGS player faction and thus a clear home base).

I soloed the few good MMO's out there DCUO STO kinda hit the wall on Skyforge definitely hit the wall on Warframe need to finish Neverwinter Defiance 2050 is a lie I play F2P MMO's that I can solo cus lately it's the only way to get a RPG experience and I don't like taking the risk of tossing money on a game then tossing more money on a sub like FF14 ARR on the off chance it might be fun.... I'm not a FF fan, never liked the series but some of that game does seem kinda fun so eh... DCUO I beat the main story but from there the grind to get to readiness for the rest of the content is too much but I enjoyed what I played, plus they seem to keep going back and forth with the balance, when I first started the game was nearly unplayable cus enemies would all swarm you, they rebalanced the damage output of enemies and made it easier to play but then it got to a point where some bosses were too hard or specific battles were too hard, also after having beat the game a few times going through some sections again is NO, not doing it again.... STO was really good and I spent money on it but ever since they've been forced to implement STD content and streamline the game it's kinda unbearable now.... they shorten the Klingon war and remove the best missions and keep the most boring missions, remove Spectres from the episode organizer but is still playable same with Wasteland [Nimbus] yet they keep a lot of the filler content like most of Solanae Dyson Sphere [it's all group content which is fine but even if you have a group the constant tug of war mechanics get old fast] then they remove 75% of Cardassian struggle relegating it to 4 missions if that and even the Borg story just cuts off at the end, every major story arc cuts off at the end abruptly and some of the rewards you used to get are now stuck at very low level cus they aren't current missions, it makes the whole game more of a chore to play cus you suffer through boring missions to get to the good stuff.... Defiance is just the same game from last gen with slightly better gfx but the same lackluster combat...with the show now dead they shoulda made a new game and progress the story, make it their way yeah?? whole new game, new quest set after season 3's end.... basically now everyone knows Earth Rep is evil, there was some drama with Irissa, Datak Tarr's house was in tatters and more that could play a part in a continuing story, it's been awhile so I honestly forget all that's happened.... STO is the one I obviously feel the strongest about, I coulda stuck with it for years but streamlining and bad content hurts it a lot....really wish STD hadn't been made...
