Y'all saying just cause this nigga has all the money and fame he shouldn't be depressed. This dude human just like me and you. Depression real AF and can take over your life.. pray for Cudi
I just think its because people don't learn the concept of chemical imbalances in the brain. A lot of the time if it can't be physically seen it's harder for a lot of people to understand and relate to
Wehere323 That's the problem though. Like you can say be positive but people gotta understand that not everyone can think like that and there may be something might be going on deep inside than what they see on the surface level
calling this strange just shows how problematic the culture surrounding depression and suicide still is. As long as depression is still viewed as "strange" or needing help is seen as a sign of weakness the conversation needs to be continued. Kid Cudi speaking on this was HUGE for mental illness as a whole, making this public was amazing for hip hop and the culture.
Sometimes he switches up the flow in his lyrics his words like issues will change to visions or some shit just like that kid cudi 4ever hold on is this yelawolf
+102477136237988226307 I've heard that and while I hear the influence Cudi is was way less grounded in his sound. I guess airy or Smokey is a way to describe it.
Kid Cudi MASSIVELY helped (still helping) me through my depression, but I can't help but feel powerless because I can't directly do the same for him. I can only pray for him 💙
It's never too late to take it back. I mean if he meant the beach boys suck with the exception of brian wilson, i agree. but brian wilson is unquestionably a genius.
Depression is real! I'm not talking about "I'm having a bad week I'm so depressed" I'm talking about feeling like shit combined with suicidal toughts for months and months sometimes even years. I destroyed depression! Glad this is being addressed. Hopefully cudi and everybody going trough depression will destroy it too. The only advice I can give is: talk. Don't hide it. YOU ARE NOT WEAK. talk about it with someone. and in time you will understand what you need to do to destroy depression.
i read that kanye had suicidal thoughts during the Taylor Swift incident and his mom's passing really got to him but his music really saved him and now has a family
DEHH on some real shit. This was a great topic to tackle. Excellently done. Everybody should give this a thumbs up so it pops up in more RU-vid recommendations. More people need to watch this and get the conversation started.
I'm one of the biggest Kid Cudi stans out there and not gonna lie, reading that facebook post broke my heart. I've looked up to this dude ever since 7th grade and he made me feel not alone thru his music when I was going thru some tough times. I wish nothing but the best for Cudi.
Jacob Hartwell black men? I dont think race is a issue in mental illness... i think in general it will help musicians maybe but black men ? Have to disagree
Jacob Hartwell not all black men are mentally disfunctional. Everyone at some point in their life has been thru a low point in their life and in Cudi's case; he let his own music and voice mask his true feelings and that's a big problem for many who look up to him.
race is an element, ive heard from several people(including kinge in this video) who have said that black men dont discuss these issues, seeing it as being week etc. obviously this is s universal problem, but there seems to be a consensus that it's a thing black men dont deal with aswell as other groups of people
This is a topic that has sadly been spoken on very little, but you guys did a fantastic and nuanced job covering it. As someone who suffers from depression and who has had suicidal thoughts it was incredibly heartwarming to see you guys talk about this issue as well as you did. Keep up the good work ^-^
Depression is natural you shouldn't be afraid to admit to it. The term "mental illness" has a bad connotation. Depression is more of a cycling phase the only way to get rid of it is to do what you want.
The term mental illness is an accurate one. Autism is a mental illness, Bipolar disorder is a mental illness. Clinical Depression is a mental illness. There's not a better term for a mental issue than mental illness.
Roxasthesupersaiyan I agree but most people are depressed at least once in life. Being depressed is completely natural. Now if you're some how depressed for no identifiable reason I can't speak on that, but for most there is a reason why.
Jirehn IsJirehn There's a difference in the severity of the depression that most people will go through and the chemically unbalanced depression that far less people will go to.
The way depression is portrayed in the media and the way the public views depression is not altogether accurate. Essentially the point I want to to make is that the real definition of depression is not what the public definition of depression is. People often do not really understand what constitutes as depression or the various types of depression and so they make rash unsubstantiated claims about their or other's "mental illnesses" or mental state. Most people have no idea that depression is a mood that is a feature of various psychiatric syndromes like major depressive disorder. I do not have all the information on depression, but I do know what I have stated so far. That's all I have to say. I do not have the ability to accurately describe depression any more than I already have.
One of the best conversations you guys have had on this channel. Hopefully it'll open the door for more people dealing with mental issues to feel more comfortable in addressing these topics.
Hasn't he alluded to being depressed before? Even on his most popular single he talked about smoking to take the pain away. I don't remember if that song was supposed to be from his perspective or not but still
Yes. I don't understand how this is a surprise to anyone considering most of his music and whole persona has been this struggling, depressed, lonely outsider with a habit for drugs. I'm sure you can even find interviews with him discussing it. I think it's getting attention mostly because he announced he's getting help straight out and it's not as common to bring it up because of this social stigma, especially from a hip hop artist. Other than that, this isn't really astounding, though I have and always will be pulling for Cudi.
Brandon Standifer He had a song (These Worries) that had a cocaine snorting sound at the beginning of it. How are people surprised he's depressed, you thought he was joking? "When did I become a ghost?"
hell, even Day N Nite was about him smoking to get rid of the pain. Check the first verse: Day and night I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind I look for peace but see I don't attain What I need for keeps this silly game we play, play Now look at this Madness to magnet keeps attracting me, me I try to run but see I'm not that fast I think I'm first but surely finish last, last even the chorus: cause day and night The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night He's all alone through the day and night The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night Day and night The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night He's all alone, some things will never change The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night That was his first big hit and people act like they didn't see it coming.
+Skygooose Wait...you're not really going to focus on a comment about the fucking Beach Boys on a video about depression and suicide in urban communities ARE YOU?
Depression has taken over my life at times and Cudi's music has always been there for me. Depressed person makes depressed music and he has helped many people with his music whether he realizes it or not. Thanks Scott
Had a rock music class. They made me listen to old rock music. I listen to Beatles and Rolling Stones, fuck with them. Heard Beach Boys, that shit was torture to my ears. My teacher had the nerve to say Beach Boys is next to Beatles, looked at him SMFH!!!!!
Not only a great convo but an IMPORTANT one at that. I can def relate to Cuddy, once again goes to show man we may never know what people are really going through. They seem like the happiest but maybe in the dumps in inside. So spread love and yeah a DEHH vid good for the soul
Thank you for continuing the conversation. Everyone has mental health the same way everyone has physical health, and it should be taken seriously and taken care of as well... thank you DEHH
Great video obviously a heart-wrenching Topic that needs to be address in the inner-city communities many kids growing up doesn't know how to deal with mental issues and it's really sad because we have the most reason to be depression just off living conditions only.
Yoooo last night I actually watched an older DEHH convo and was gonna ask y'all on the next video when another was gonna go up. Guess I don't have to. Good shit guys! Awesome content as always,
cudi always been going thru some shit... thats why we love him. he was always honest about it.... i mean like... day n night, persuit of hapiness, trapped in my mind, these worries, all along, man on the moon....
I Thank you guys for this convo. I'm a black independent artist and have dealt with anxiety and depression off and on. I'm just fed up with our people calling me sensitive, or soft or a punk or stuck in my feelings because I really feel some shit. this needs to be talked about. that and its crazy Cudi and Kanye is one of my biggest influences for the type of music I make. so to here Cudi going through this doesnt make me feel like I lost hope. its makes me feel like that I'm not alone and even my idols go through it. I'm sick of the hip-hop stereotype of rappers gotta be hard gangsters from the trap. some ignorant people make fun of people for feeling emotions and shit. now I wish hip-hop would change.
Yeah that definitely threw me off. The Beach Boys, didn't always make the happy-go-lucky surfing music that c town is probably thinking of. A lot of songs on Pet Sounds point to Brian Wilson's mental health so I don't completely agree with Myke.
+Chad Czerny real talk. whatever, I don't care what someone else thinks about music anyways, I never understood why it upsets some people. but yeah, I used to blaze a fatty and drive listenin to Pet Sounds, that album is perfect.
I'm actually very glad this issue has been gaining so much attention. Depression can come from so many things, and for you conspiracy theorists, it can even come from the foods you eat. I think one of the best songs I've heard on this issue is Joyner Lucas' "I'm Sorry". I think it captures the emotion so well and also opens up the room for that discussion.
I fuck with kid cudi's music, even though I don't listen to him a lot. I always felt his music is depressing. Cudi doesnt give me a vibe of someone that is trying to overcome depression in his music. People hate Eminem's Recovery, but he addressed many issues and wrote uplifting music to overcome his drug abuse, I think dat album is underrated. Compare to Cudi, he never really evolved and stayed the same. I have a question, "Is depressing music uplifting?"
it depends on the listener. some people may use it to go further down the rabbit hole, others just need someone to arttistically tap into their pain, and the sense of "im not alone" can be very validating and uplifting for people
Honestly having a strong family unit is a serious necessity for a healthy childhood and that is just something the black community and many other communities are just straight up missing. So many black kids grow up without a father, not only does that prevent them from having a male figure in the household it also basically guarantees that they will grow up in poverty. I think it is absurd to think this has nothing to do with how black people basically have a "suck it up" attitude towards mental illness.
Myke was trying to say you cant see an artists mental health through his music while Jay was saying that he noted something was wrong with Kanye in TLOP, and three years later its known that Kanye is bipolar lol
Time the hell out. Myke. The Beach Boys are awesome. Listen to Pet Sounds. The harmonies and songwriting on that album are perfect. And their more abstract work, such as Surf's Up, is so interesting and hilarious because the name suggests it will be just another easy going Beach Boys album.
Once I heard him questioning "why's he, along with all these other new artists, always making sad music?" on his MOTM2 review, I considered everything Melon said about Cudi to be irrelevant. Hugely disrespectful
Im glad he finally got help. If you sit around and think about the things that make you depressed, which you will do when you sit around while depressed, it will tear you down make it worse and fuck you up.
This is such an interesting topic cause in Hip Hop we have rappers going through these depressive thoughts like Danny, Earl, Tyler, Sadistik, Cudi and a lot of rappers more
This is what made the last album so good. It was so authentic and you really felt what part of his life Cudi was in. Obviously I'm happy he didn't give into his urges, but that's what really gave speedin bullet, his last album, it's distinct flavor.
I love how well this conversation is resonating with y'all and I'm glad so many of us are with Kid Cudi and hopes he gets the help he needs. Y'all take care of yourselves! And thanks for watching my face as always, I know this shit's getting old by now lol
Maybe cudi was saying something in his last album "I might go lose it and drive off a cliff fall in the void" I knew from the second I heard soundtrack to my life cudi has shit on his plate. Didn't listen to him for a long time after but came back to sb2h. Those are the most raw lyrics I've heard from him.
Okay, come on, Myke. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds along with Sgt. Peppers were the 2 most important albums in shifting the focus from singles to albums in the music industry. Who knows where popular music would be without them, but it certainly wouldn't be here. And don't even tell me their later output was bad. The early stuff was, but not late stuff.
