When I was a kid, my mom would take me to chess clubs where I would get thoroughly destroyed over the board by grumpy old timers. I just went cause I liked playing chess, but I wasn't some prodigy or anything. I wondered why they were so ruthless playing a kid when I never thought I had a chance to beat them, but I also never knew there were chess prodigies my age who could wipe the floor with most adults. Never occurred to me that they were playing with their pride on the line.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it “playing for pride.” It’s a chess match, you play to win, not to forfeit. The only instance, I believe, when you should deliberately lose is when you’re coaching someone. If they weren’t teaching you anything and instead were having an actual match, that’s simply how chess is played.
@Civ33
@Civ33 8 месяцев назад
@@dehydratedlord4509 It's not like I expected them to let me win, I understood we were still playing a chess match, but I only ever recall 1 younger dude there who was actually nice to me and willing to talk with me before and after the match. He'd still beat me, but I had a much nicer experience there playing against him. I guess this post was more about their attitude than their play style, I just wanted to play chess with other people who liked to play chess, but felt pretty unwelcome for the most part
