All of us who played baseball all have PTSD from that "one kid" who threw like 80 mph and couldn't hit the strike zone to save his life, but still was able to pitch because he was the coaches son.

I remember that most of our team were the football players (bullies) on their off season. One of them who sometimes pitched got caught underage drinking and was suspended for half the season. During practice when the coach wasn’t looking this kid would sneak up behind non football players and put them in a headlock until they passed out and he would get away with it because the other football players would vouch for him since they laughed at it. Then on the day he was off his suspension they let him pick and I will never forget what happened. He was up to pitch and he beamed the ENTIRE batting lineup. So after hitting eight players the ninth was about to go out but they decided to have a pitch hitter. The umpire claimed the ball actually hit his bat and called it a foul ball and not a beam, but the ball went into his jaw and broke it. I remember us waiting on the field while an ambulance came to take the kid to the hospital.

I did that... I was the Catcher and I had 1 hell of an Arm... 1 day we ran out of pitchers so the coach asked me to pitch! I had never, ever stepped on the mound before! 🤣🤣 That ball was all over the place!! It was fast though!! They 🤣let me pitch 2 innings and gave up on me!!

I remember taking a swing at a bad pitch and it caught every single knuckle on my right hand grip. It fractured 2 of my fingers. But the impact still bunted the ball forward and i can remember wanting help and crying in pain but all the coaches and the parents just wanted me to run to first base. I was fucking 7 years old, i REFUSED to play baseball after that.

OK Matt, you didn't ask for it, but here it is. When I was little, I played wiffle ball where I played with just one or two kids, but I didn't know anything about baseball. So, my dad takes me to little league tryouts, and they have me hit off the tee, to figure out where I should be placed. I missed twice, all the kids were laughing, then a coach raised the tee and I hit it. It was a grounder, went past the first baseman into right field, so I rounded first heading for second. Right fielder threw the ball to left field, so I rounded second. Left fielder picked up the ball, I rounded third and thought I should go for it. Left field threw to third base, but too late. Third base threw home, in time, catcher dropped it, I scored. For real. Coach says "See that team over there?" (all the on the side of the school grounds) "Go tell the coach I sent you over". So I go, and I become a mini little Texas Ranger. I think I was in 2nd grade. The team was already established, so I was banished to right field, where I would spend the next four years. Allow me to provide you with the level of instruction I was given over the course of those four years relative to batting, catching, throwing, understanding the game, etc. OK, that's out of the way, we can get on with the rest of the story. I did learn how to kneel to block a grounder, that much I was taught. I was also told to choke up on the bat. Pretty sure that was it. I got on base by walks, might have been hit once or twice. It took me three years to get on base by hitting the ball, and I might not remember it so well if I hadn't known the pitcher from school, who was mocking me out from the pitcher's mound that there was no way I was going to get a hit off him. J.R. Abeyounise (spelling has to be wrong). What a jerk - can you imagine an umpire allowing a pitcher to taunt a batter? Welcome to 1975. Well, anyway, I hit that sucker, a pop fly that surprised me more than anyone. I ran to first and the ball just dropped in no man's land between the right fielder and the first baseman, neither of whom knew what to do. Really, I think the first baseman should have gone for it and the pitcher covered first, but in LL that isn't going to happen. The ball landed just outside the dirt. Now, there was also the time my dad talked the coach into letting me pitch an inning. This was interesting, and I wish I could have heard (or been aware of) the discussion. See, the coach's fat, annoying son was the pitcher. Louie. I shouldn't say he was annoying though. They were ALL annoying to me because I was far and away the worst player on the team, so it wasn't like anybody was excited to see me when I showed up at the ball park. Anyway, dad tells me I'm going to pitch next inning. Are you kidding? This was the only time during that four years that Louie did not pitch. Thing was, I could throw. I used to practice on the side of the house, throwing tennis balls at the brick side of the garage, and seeing how many times in a row I could hit the same brick. Thing was, I had no wind-up, no pitching experience, no coaching, no knowledge of how to pitch at all. So in I go. And I blew down three batters in a row, all strikeouts. Not even a foul tip. I might have thrown a ball or two in there, but to be very honest, I was dominant, and I threw pretty hard, and the kids couldn't touch it. It was an amazing moment. Next inning Louie was put back in and that was that, but I guess my dad knew something about me that I hadn't recognized, or he figured we're going to go all in on building my confidence or shattering it forever, you can decide that. I don't know why I stuck with it, I guess there was some expectation or my parents just signed me up or I don't know. I did like baseball, I did collect cards for a while, and as the years went by I really enjoyed neighborhood pickup games, but LL.....what a crud experience that was for me, praying every inning in right field "Please God, don't let them hit it to me". I only ever had to make a play on a ball once or twice, by which I mean run and get the ball and try to figure out where I was supposed to throw it. Years and years later, I'm working my first real job, I'm like 23 years old, and doing proposal work for a government contractor. I worked with a few different engineers to put proposals together at this place, and one time my mind was blown when in walks my LL baseball coach. He was nearing retirement I suppose by then. My dislike of the man had never really subsided, and I suppose it was one of those moments when you could call the guy out and go through the whole thing in a cathartic way. I took the higher road. Reminded him who I was, just to see if he remembered. I think he remembered the name but not much beyond that, which was ok by me. When my kids were little I coached both their LL ball teams to ensure they and their teammates would have a better experience than me - and they did - and they learned something - but of the four or five teams I coached I bet I could only remember five or six of the kids if they came up to me in a store. Too much time passes, the kids change so much, and you only tend to remember their first names anyway. OK, well, that's the whole story. I hope you found some entertainment in that - I do, believe it or not. Sorry so long - thought you might do with a chuckle.

I'm impressed the ump called that last pitch a ball (it was). Most of the umps in my son's little league eventually start calling anything within a foot of the plate a strike just to keep the game moving. It's a real treat to have everything from your ankles to your eyeballs called a strike while the coach is yelling "pick your pitch" or "lay off the high ones!" My instruction to my son is, "if you see one you can reach, hit it."

Even at the Little League level these kids are being taught they cannot pitch inside. Memo to pitchers. That plate belongs to you. The box around the plate, it belongs to you. If a batter leans into that spot and they get hit, tough rocks. Don't stop pitching inside, you give them twice as good of a chance to hit the ball if you give up half of the pitcher's box.

Well, he had reason to be a bit perturbed when the pitch was so far inside it was behind him. But unlike the people in the stands, he kept his composure. And the ump issued a warning to the pitcher. But I think I missed why the pitcher was ejected, not being expert on youth league rules. Looked like the pitcher just stepped off the mound, perhaps to gather himself. Was it becauseche created a game delay? Seriously, what did I miss? Just want to learn.

I can't see where the batter is standing. It looks like he is crowding the plate and the pitcher is trying to move him back but doesn't have the control to do that. In my experience as a former player and now a parent in “travel” level sports, kids that lose their composure and react, violently or hysterically are usually under an inordinate amount of pressure from their parents. When my son was playing 11U a pitcher on the opposing team collapsed in tears on the mound and started hyperventilating. His dad has been barking at him the whole time and when that happened, the kids mom cursed him up and down and ran on the field to see if he was ok. The whole thing was awkward and reminded me of a similar scene in the original Bad News Bears.

I once got ejected for leaping over the catcher, which apparently is illegal in non-pro leagues, but if I hadn't jumped, I would've trucked the catcher and gotten ejected and the catcher would've got hurt. Screw the catcher for putting himself in a situation where I can't really do anything but get ejected. The way the play was set up, I couldn't slide because that would once again be a collision with the catcher, and it was impossible to slow momentum that quickly. That rule needs to change. If the catcher is blocking the plate or diving right at you in your way, it should be legal to jump like Chris Coghlan. Maybe not that high, but you know what I mean.
