The future of children’s cancer services is changing as NHS England - London is deciding where a Principal Treatment Centre for children’s cancer services should be located.
St George’s has been part of the current Principal Treatment Centre, alongside the Royal Marsden Hospital, for more than 25 years and our children’s services are rated Outstanding by the CQC.
We are the only site in south London that has an existing relationship with and already delivers paediatric oncology care with our partners, The Royal Marsden.
We already provide most of the specialist paediatric services that really matter for children with cancer, including paediatric intensive care, neurosurgery and much more.

Film transcript:
A childhood cancer diagnosis is devastating for the whole family - and the months that follow are difficult, too. Parents need to know their children are in the best possible hands and that there is support available for them and their families too.
That’s exactly what you get here at St George’s, where we’ve been providing specialist cancer care for children for more than 25 years.
Last year, our children’s cancer service - which is rated outstanding by the CQC - treated more than 170 young patients living with cancer across South London, Kent and Medway, Surrey, Sussex and beyond.
Not only do we provide outstanding care, we are the only place where children with brain cancer can receive all their treatment, including surgery, in one location. We are also already an adult bone marrow transplant centre and will be able to continue transplants for children seamlessly.
We’re leading the way on research, too. Our research centre has been studying cancer in children for many years with the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden.
But now we face a new challenge.
This year, NHS England will run a public consultation on where a new Children’s Cancer Principal Treatment Centre should be located, and St George’s is one of the two options available.
Closing our regional children’s cancer service and moving it to another hospital will have a knock-on effect on our other children’s services - of which we treat 130,000 children every year and have one of the largest paediatric surgery services in the UK.
We - and families - believe Kids Deserve St George’s.
They have told us that they want their kids to continue to get cancer care here - not just because of the outstanding care, but because of our location, our caring and experienced staff and our exciting vision for the new children’s cancer centre.
Parents of children with cancer are unequivocal: They don’t and won’t use public transport with a poorly, vulnerable child. That’s why families will be able to drive up to the front door, drop off or park directly outside our new state-of-the-art children’s hospital that we are ready to build.
Jackson is just one of our patients to finish treatment this year - and rang our end-of-treatment bell to mark the occasion.
Help us to continue to deliver outstanding care for children like Jackson.
