The insane blood sprays are actually an homage to a classic Japanese samurai film, “Sanjuro” by Akira Kurosawa, in which a blood bag ruptured during a duel causing it to spray like a fountain. Kurosawa kept it in the film, and that effect has been replicated and paid tribute numerous times in film history since.

My favorite bit of Kill Bill lore is that Oren and The Bride were best friends. This is why the bride knows her entire life story and can tell it to us step by step, and that's why they have little inside jokes that they finish like the "trix are for kids line". This is also why she apologizes and the Bride actually accepts it. Also at the end when she finally kills Oren she barely looks at the body because she doesn't wanna look at the body of the woman that used to be her best friend.

Are you….lol okay. Yeah, that’s different. Show your source, because that is NOT how the deadly viper assassination squad operated. Bill intentionality kept the members in a state of paranoia and antagonism through his wannabe puppet master ways. I’m afraid you’ve built your own narrative here, because Tarantino has never made this claim in any serious way.

the scene where O-ren has a "spidey sense" there's a layered sound of her screams as a child from the animated sequence. Although this is a great action film, it still references trauma and violence at a young age. she was literally the youngest in the squad; if she did not have that self-preservation instinct, she would not have lasted as long as she did the way that she did.

18:28 it's funny how Katanas have gotten such a big reputation in the nerdverse, considering the reason the Japanese sword making is so unique (the method of folding the iron many many times to strengthen it) is that the iron ore avaliable in Japan is terribly bad. the end result really isn't much stronger than traditional european steel.

Kill Bill is loosely based on the japanese film Lady Snowblood. Tarantino pays homage to the film by having O-ren dressed in all white during her battle with the Bride and the song that plays afterward is sung by Meiko Kaji, the actress who originally played Lady Snowblood.

So that didn't pay off or what? Because the uncut version of this movie is rated R in most countries (with their equivalent rating systems). And it doesn't really make sense, because there is a LOT of violence still in color. Was that really the reason?
@button9
@button9 5 месяцев назад
@@Riddler0603I think it was the difference between ‘a lot’ and ‘way too much’ … It’s been a long time since watching all the behind the scenes and interviews but the censors were being really stubborn and told him to tone it down (I think they were trying to avoid an NC-17 rating - there was a lot of back and forth going on appease the ratings) so he then proposed putting some scenes in B&W because he wasn’t going to cut out scenes and suddenly they were fine with it. Home distribution ratings and censoring doesn’t matter as much, but the main goal was keeping it R for theatre release. NC-17 cuts down on theatrical screenings by a lot plus it cuts down audience viewership. So that was the main “pay off”.

Fun Facts About Katanas Like The Bride’s: 1) Ancient Samurai used to test the sharpness of their katanas by testing them on human bodies. So back then If you were guilty of a crime like theft they would cut off your hand but I have more serious crimes they would cut you in half. If the sort cut through one body cleanly with one strike it would be called a one body blade. Yeah throughout history there have been 2 body, 3 body, and in a museum in Japan there is a 5 body blade! 2) The purpose of spinning the sword after a kill is so the blood lubricates the blade, making the next slash cut deeper and more cleanly. 3) Hattori Hanzō (the man who forged the sword for The Bride) was a real life ninja from Feudal Japan. Known as one of the best tacticians and sword fighters that ever lived.

I’m SO GLAD you’re finally getting to Kill Bill! There are so many aesthetic choices in this and its sequel that the films practically have style to burn! Costuming, sound design, music choices, et al. Fun fact about the scene with the Crazy 88: Tarantino was told that the scene was far too graphic and bloody in its original form, and would yield an NC-17 rating instead of R, which would affect the number of screens that could show it in theaters in the US, Canada, China, and Taiwan. To get around that, he had his editors make a simple change: cut the scene to Black & White at a contextually opportune moment in the sequence. Thankfully, they were creative with the when, and the change to Black & White for a few minutes (as well as the lights being turned off and seeing silhouettes later) actually made sense and added a bit more stylistic flare, as many assumed it was just solely a creative choice. Clever!

The dramaticized amount of blood is deeply inspired in many anime and action films by an iconic accident that happened during filming of Sanjuro by director Akira Kurosawa. The blood spray effect for a scene was supposed to have a good spout of blood during a fight scene, but something happened with the hose and apparatus so it expended almost the entirety of the fake blood in a massive gush like we see here.

It never failed to win a match. I never saw anyone else use or demonstrate my secret technique, until this movie, where the Bride used it on O-Ren Ishii to make the match again equal. To say that I was surprised, gratified and thrilled would be an understatement. There were a fair number of Hollywood stunt professionals in our number back then. It is just remotely possible that one of them saw my technique, and needing a good 'holy F#@& where did that come from' technique, remembered mine. Of course it is more probable that a better swordsman than I had figured out my trick independently. But an old man is allowed his fantasies, that the bride won her duel because she had learned my secret technique.

@@rolandcooke You've got it right. It is a sacrifice all-or-nothing move because it leaves you incredibly vulnerable if it doesn't work. You really only want to use it when you know your opponent is cutting high. You drop like a rock straight to the ground. As you do you spin 360 degrees to your strong hand side and strike bottom up with a single hand. The spin while you drop however transfers into the strike so despite being a one hand blow, it is very strong. The strike rises through the opponent's guard on their weaker side (defensively) from the ground, which is inately harder to defend against. If you've done this while they have executed a high cut on you, they effectively have no way to defend against it other than somehow seeing it coming and maybe jumping out of it's way.

She starts with all the basic tourist kind of talk, not even saying the Rs or Os correctly; and then outta nowhere she drops native-level killer talk. And she isn't saying it as a direct translation; she's saying it as a swordsman would say it "Because there is a rat I need to cut." Not the kind of phrasing you get from a dictionary. And the way he immediately figures out exactly who she is and why she's there, and is like "so I have to make you a sword now" is perfect.

Really appreciate that you're going to focus on more films this year. I love the TV series reactions, but as you said there is such a massive catalog of films to catch up on. I'll be voting in the Patreon polls!

23:42 This fight is totally unrealistic by normal movie standards. This is partly due to the almost magical nature of one of the Bride’s teachers. But also remember that in the universe in which all Quentin Tarantino movies co-exist, Kill Bill is actually a martial arts film series playing at the theater. Essentially the characters in his other movies would be watching this in their spare time.

Her yellow body suit is a nod to Bruce Lee as he wore one in enter the dragon. The movies are Quentin's appreciation of Japanese cinema which inspired him as a kid.

Her yellow outfit with black stripes was an homage to Bruce Lee’s classic outfit in his movie “Game Of Death”, a great and classic look!

This movie was my introduction to Tarantino. I absolutely loved this movie. How crazy the stunts were and how over the top the gore was. I can’t wait for 2.

One of my favourite lines from Kill Bill Vol.1 is after the Crazy 88 fight and the bride says “Those of you lucky enough to have your lives, take them with you. However, leave the limbs you've lost. They belong to me now. EXCEPT YOU, SOFIE!” They way she yells at Sofia always cracks me up 😂

If you want to do more classic movies please consider "12 Angry Men" (1957). Outstanding timeless film.

A fun documentary to watch is Double Dare, about 2 stunt women - the one for Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman Jeannie Epper, and Zoe Bell, who worked on Xena TV show, and, during the documentary, becomes Uma's stunt double for Kill Bill.

I remember when I first watched this movie, I loved it so much I went out and got the second movie and watched it the same night! I could not even wait to the next day. The end was such a huge cliff hanger! and the fight with O'ren is possibly my favorite fight scene in a movie. Such a masterpiece.

Music and Score for this movie was mostly done by RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. One of my favorite movies, so perfectly done. Thanks for the reaction. Have you considered watching "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"? Fun movie with a stacked cast. (Kinda like how Scott Pilgrim was) And a very devoted cult following.

The Hattori Hanzo scene in this movie is one of my favorite scenes of any movie ever. The spoken and unspoken communication, the music, the setting... it's just so good. I love how there is this idea that Hanzo owes Kiddo something because Bill was his student, and she Bill's. That idea that because Bill caused her so much pain, that some of that pain is Hanzo's responsibility because Bill couldn't have done that without his influence, even if historic. And not only that she feels this way, but that he ultimately agrees to help her gain her revenge as retribution for his role. It is just masterful.

I saw this in the theater w/ my GF and she kept laughing a bunch during the gnarliest gore scenes like they were hilarious. She was the only person laughing in the theater, with at least a few dozen people in the audience, just cracking up, full belly laughs. I tried to get her to chill out, but she was having too much fun with this one. She was different than most and I hope she's happy wherever she is.
