In this episode of Auto Afflicted: I attempt to lead a 2Bennett Audimotive group drive in the Napa wine country piloting a 1986 Audi 4000 CS Quattro. The weather is perfect, the sun is shining, and the car is running smoothly - until it isn't.
As the group makes it’s way through the winding roads and rolling hills, the Quattro suddenly feels off. The car starts to sputter and lose power, I pull over to the side of the road. What could have caused this sudden engine trouble?

Nothing like that stomach drop feeling when a fun day of driving turns into 'what just happened?'... But with these old german vessels gotta take the little bit of bad with the lotta bit of good sometimes and just hope that doesn't turn, the opposite.

So true. It was also very troubling for me as I didn’t want to be damaging my friends car. But as this wasn’t a nut and bolt restoration, these things have potential to happen for sure. In the end it still turned out all right. Probably just need to clean the pick up at the oil pump and may be replaced oil pump

I think the main problem was the flashing red lights in the instrument panel...

"Pinching down on big disks" - ultimate sex tape title. Glad no classics were permanently harmed in the making of this

Check your knock sensor. It's gone bad and put you in limp mode by nerfing the timing. My Coupe GT did the same thing years back and the sensor is easy to get to on the side of engine by the radiator. Sensor is also the same as on a VW from the same era. I think it has a flat 3 prong plug if I remember correctly. It's not dead yet, long live the quattro!

Oh! Great beta. Definitely not dead. As it drives around the parking lot but haven’t tried to repair as of yet

@@AutoAfflicted Let me know how that repair goes and if that does the trick! I love the sound those cars make, especially through a tunnel. Even the induction is pleasing on the NA models in my opinion

I got a soft spot for the 5cylinder turbo 20valve of course but this NA sounds really good

that car doesnt have knock sensors. that one would have the most basic form of CIS on it. late coupe GT's like 87 and upward did have the CIS-E III system that was later found in the audi 90 quattro and those had knock control units on them.

@@vwnut8392 yeah, it was a the kjettronic model. What is that sensor called then? I had assumed it was a knock sensor because it put me into limp mode sometimes until I replaced it. The faulty one had 30 years of rust/ corrosion that made it act up randomly until it got really bad and only ran with the limp timing not wanting to rev past 3500ish

time for a 20V turbo swap!!!

and car looks like an 85 or newer, its post facelift. 84 model year 4000's have a completely different appearance like 4 square headlights instead of composite lamps, goofy looking bumpers that could double as a work bench, tail lights are completely different, dash is also completely different than this car also the 84's have 2 pane glass in the doors where as 85 and up was a single window. there are more differences but these are the most obvious between the 84 and the 85-87 4000's. i own an 84 myself with a 20VT swap in it.

The 20VT swap would be cool!

The coolant level was too high, maybe you boiled the engine!
@AutoAfflicted
@AutoAfflicted 11 месяцев назад
Yes, oil pressure dropped and coolant temp went up! The shop has not diagnosed the issue as of yet

@@AutoAfflicted Maybe the cooling fan doesn’t kick in because of the bulb that sits at the bottom of the radiator!
