It used to be called "Aggressive Whispering". Not sure what they call it now. What they would do, to preserve the lead singers voice, is that they would crank the mic up, and instead of roaring and growling, they would actually whisper loudly. That would allow the singer to be able to still sing smooth and not have his voice torn apart by screaming constantly. Back in the day, they would incorporate more guitar solos in live shows to keep the singer from losing his voice. Just giving them a break from singing. Also, bands would hire a background singer who would have the same vocal range as the lead. Little secret from the metal scene.
