Sounds like a great plan! I have one going into first grade next year. His handwriting definitely needs work. That may be my focus this summer. I loved the little foot that snuck in :) My 1 year old is always stepping on or sitting on books. She's like a cat :)
That's a great focus for the summer! Handwriting is such an important skill to work on. I find that focused time outside of regular school time can make it less of a battle.
Have you ever looked at Core Knowledge before? Their kindergarten social studies units are great. It’s meant for public schools usually but it works so well. They give you a read aloud prompt to read and a flip book to look at as you read it. As you are reading it also gives your notes off to the side to read and ask the child to make sure they are absorbing it or making connections. Best part is it’s free!
@@watermelonwriter agreed! Core Knowledge has been amazing for my kids so far. We don’t use every piece but it really helps build that background knowledge.
For social studies we are doing Me On the Map by little school of smiths and using five in a row after we finish that! ❤️ love your videos. Trying out Biblioplan for the first time this year and looking forward to it! Thanks for your recommendations!
By your recommendation we are trying CLE this upcoming school year! My order is coming Monday and I’m thrilled! I’m in the same boat with my son. He just finished kindergarten but he was doing a mix of kindergarten and 1st grade level curriculum. I decided to go ahead into level two LA and reading but keep math, science and social studies at level 1 just to really make sure everything is covered. I love that homeschooling allows us to follow our kids and their strengths and also adapt to things they may need more time with. I hope we love CLE as much as you do! It looks more comprehensive than what we used before which is what I was looking for. ❤️
We did Biblioplan’s Ancient this year and loved it. Some weeks we had to alternate between Story of the World and Remember the Days because life was lifing😂. But I love that it is a simpler version of MFW and it does all the work for us parents! For social studies, you might could read books about each type of helpers, then dress up as them and possibly field trips. As a bonus this could count as Career Exploration for your oldest son.
I'm going to jump in on "gifted" side that watermelonwriter was talking about. I love how you're giving your daughter what she's asking for! Way to go for seeing that and having the courage to let her fly. On the behavior side, I want to check to see if you've seen extremely advanced vocabulary from your daughter in her spoken language, if she seems to have much bigger emotions than her siblings, or if she prefers to interact with kids much older than her or even prefer interacting with adults. If you said yes, then it's possible your daughter could have a high IQ and therefore be diagnosed as "gifted" in the technical psychological sense rather than just advanced in her academic abilities. Being gifted comes with a whole set of unique behavioral and psychological needs like autism has, so I always try to keep my ears out for possibilities of undiagnosed kids like I was. It's no fun getting a late diagnosis as an adult. If she's not gifted in the technical sense, keep encouraging her! You're doing an awesome job.❤
Chiming in here on the developmental level versus ability level question! Background: I studied gifted education for my Master's degree and picked up a few things! One thing they really emphasize in all the gifted ed books and in the courses in that the developmental level WILL follow as needed. Feed their ability level, and everything else will be totally fine. In fact, for younger children, they do better with older children and adults rather than many of their age peers in terms of maturity and engagement. So (as you are clearly doing) follow her lead and let her blossom
For social studies, my first thought is to look at Five in a Row and only use the parts of it that relate to social studies. There are a lot of suggestions for that area related to each book. It's one of my children's favorite curriculums and can be very Hands-On or not depending on how you want to do it.
We had a similar. Ended up putting her in Abeka grade 1 as an incoming kindergartener and we are stretching it out because honestly it’s a BIG curriculum with all the reading writing spelling etc. … and now at the end of K she is in Abeka arithmetic 2 and reading chapter books. It’s been crazy. Adding in Spanish and piano this summer with swimming. I can’t wait to hear how she develops. My daughter has big big feels and perfectionism so that’s tough sometimes but I’m curious about yours
I just discovered that Miacademy has their videos on youtube. There is a whole series for social studies. I was thinking of watching a video and pairing it up with a book on each subject (example: video on the American flag combined with an easy reader or picture book about the flag).
In my opinion it is easy but I don't know with recovering from c section and 6 kids. You definitely need simplicity for this busy time. It is not too expensive so worth giving it a try Hope this helps❤
