George said " Elizabeth is my pride and joy ,, but Margaret is my beloved darling " It was so beautiful I thought . He was a great father, husband and king
ThatOneAsianBroChick King George was indeed introverted and I guess he suffered from anxiety and therefore stuttered but mostly the one that don’t seek power, are the best at ruling. King Edward was charismatic and extroverted but would have been a terrible ruler
Here after watching The King's Speech. He had stammer and is frightened to speak infront of many people, let alone be the King but had no choice when his eldest brother took the easy way out and abdicated. He was a strong and resposible man. Didn't have the best childhood but raised his own children the best way and became a good father and King.
The best thing that could have happened was when Edward abdicated the throne. A man that put duty and the people of Britain first, as he taught his daughter to do, was exactly who was meant to reign. HE was a king!
God bless them both in Heaven. He never wanted to be King but was a hero to his nation. They both would be very proud of their daughter, Queen Elizabeth long may she reign and live. She's 92 now.
@@tmpqtyutmpqty4733 There is more to this. Every week she has a meeting with her prime ministers. She's learned a lot through 15 PM's. She's seen a lot and probably gives advice and opinions on her weekly meetings, even though she is not supposed to, they probably respected her opinions. Also, she saw the graceful decline of the British colonial empire and did not fight to retain parts of the British Empire, knowing colonialism was dead after WWII.
Even though George V was known to instill tough love unto his children (it was said that) he did soften after his granddaughter Elizabeth was born. He loved her so much that he wished that David (Edward VIII) would bore no children so that nothing could come between the throne and Bertie (George VI) and Lilibet (Elizabeth II)
I m not british, but I ve learnt a lot about european dinasties. To be honest, for me,Bertie was a real blessing. Im romanian, and we have a king,Carol II,the cousin of Eduard VIII,who also left the throne for a woman, almost identical as W.Simpson.In real history books,i ve read that both cousins ( your Eduard and out Carol II),suffered from priapism . That s why, both of them were insclaved by two women who had some sexual skils. And Bertie was a stutterer, like out king Michael of Romania, who was his nephew. And they look alike. Same dinastic family, same problems. I really admire George VI,aș I admire out Michael I. They were both very strong characters, despite their stummering, very inteligent and so loving aș husbands and fathers.
American here. The royal families history is really interesting to me. I don’t get why every actor whose played King George vi has looked nothing like him? He was an attractive man
Being a history buff, this was the greatest movie I have ever seen. Both men should have shared the Oscar. Watching the 60 Minutes interview was outstanding. Well done in every detail....Long Live The King!
I had the great honour of being asked to sing our national anthem 'O Canada' at a state luncheon for the Qieen Mother, in Edmonton Alberta. As she was leaving she broke away from her escort and walked over and shook my hand and thanked me for singing and she chatted a bit about the good acoustics.
Some 'alternate facts' Mitchell is also a Scottish name, from the word 'michel' meaning a big man. My grandfather was Scottish.Secondly - Hitler called the Queen Mother 'The most dangerous woman in Europe' because she united the British people behind her to fight him. Thirdly - I recently had my first holiday in Ireland and found the people to be delightfully friendly. If TurfGuy is Irish then he's the disgrace to his race.
Maybe unbelievable because he was born on the anniversary of Prince Albert’s death. The family was concerned about how Queen Victoria would feel toward the baby boy. They named him Albert, after his great grandfather. This is from Wikipedia: “Uncertain of how the Prince Consort's widow, Queen Victoria, would take the news of the birth, the Prince of Wales wrote to the Duke of York that the Queen had been "rather distressed". Two days later, he wrote again: "I really think it would gratify her if you yourself proposed the name Albert to her."[4] The Queen was mollified by the proposal to name the new baby Albert, and wrote to the Duchess of York: "I am all impatience to see the new one, born on such a sad day but rather more dear to me, especially as he will be called by that dear name which is a byword for all that is great and good”
More I’m portent, she was a good and decent and strong woman, wife and mother. She was the woman behind the man. She gave their home and family love and stability and dignity. And she was there for Bertie. And as the queen mum, she as at Queen Elizabeth’s side, every step of the way.
Also, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the first English born Consort since Catherine Parr, last wife of Henry VIII, who died in 1545. After that all Consorts were foreign born, though James II first wife, and mother of the two future Queens, Mary II and Anne was English, but she died 14 years before he took the Crown. His second wife, who was the Consort, was Italian.
@@SymphonyBrahms I know Francis of Teck was German. But we're talking about who the first English consort here and it isn't the queen mum, as Mary of Teck was born British too.
In spite of her initial refusals, I think the queen mom was devoted to her husband and her job as duchess of York and of queen and finally, as queen mother.
Poor Prince John... He didn't deserves the treatment he had (hiding) just because he was ill so different for them. Even his tomb is not a royal prince tomb. George v and Mary were heartless. What a shame ! RIP beautiful and lovely Prince John.
@@sabrinadupont2017 He was a much loved member of the family. He had epilepsy, and most likely because of the frequent seizures, had developmental problems. He lived in the country close to his grandmother, Queen Alexandra. She had a garden bed made for him which he enjoyed planting flowers in every time he came. He had friends he played with. He had the mind of a small child, even as he grew older. He was not able to function well or understand what was going on much at official occasions. In the country, he was able to have fun with his pets and friends and didn't have to go to official events. His last day was happy, spent going for a long walk with his big sister Mary. He was buried close to where he lived much of his life, very close to his late uncle, by the way. Do you criticize that Prince Alexander John, George V's baby brother, was buried in the Sandringham cemetery too? Or is that okay?
@@SR-iy4gg Don't be mad at me. His story is so sad. For me even if he had seizure, he could be with his family. He could be in the palace with them but not in public representation or responsabilité but It's not a reason to hiding him. He could have friends but a child needs to be with his parents, brothers and sister... Even if they visited him, it's not the same thing, only visits. When you hear that one of his brothers told about him in a letter, It's just horrible and heartless. Sorry but this is my opinion.
I always thought behind the scenes the queen mother was a witch but in truth she loved her husband and her two daughters. And would do anything for them.
She did but she is a witch of a person indeed. What do you expect, even in the documentary here, the narrator said she wasn't pretty 😄 and she wasnt shes ugly. Knowing women she had to compensate her uglyness into something pretty so compromiseing would be her being disgustingly horrible as a person and fake charming to others
The last thing Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons wanted as to be Queen. In fact Bertie had to ask her three times to marry him. She finally relented. What she "got" after Dec 1936 was a testing time, but she well and truly served her country totally.
You are correct, he was the eldest son and he is the only one people think off when it comes to Queen Victoria's children. They forget Victoria, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold and Beatrice.
Edward Vll was terrified of his mother Queen Victoria, I cant say I totally blame him for how he treated his sons at least as far as the "ecxcuse" for his trauma goes ,she was very tough and sadly the cycle continued with hs sonGeorge the V and his sons until finally George the Vl broke the circle of using fear to raise your kids, good for him at that specific aspect of not using fear to raise a child (coldness is another issue), and it thankfully carried on with Queen Elizabeth ll and her son Prince Charles lll and him with his son William the V and him with his son George Vll and hopefully it will continue like that.
Truth...they are pathetic lost souls who don't know how to love or be loved. They live in a world of illusion...and will NEVER KNOW true admiration, love, or respect in an inauthentic shell. If they weren't so evil and destructive towards others, one might feel some sympathy for their meaningless life.
A Netflix documentary said as much. George V was very harsh as was their Mum. Watch 'The Crown' on Netflix or somewhere and see ERII's story when Prince Philip and she were first married then she became Queen.
Indeed. George V was not raised with an iron hand but his sons were, by him. He was stupid, said to have never read a book, and loved nothing more than slaughtering animals. His appalling treatment of his epileptic last son John is a stark condemnation of him. Queen Mary was his enabler.
@@vivianebeget Whether it mattered or not as far as the succession, it's still incorrect to say he was the first child. That's not the only thing this video got wrong.
My mother was same age as the Queen but lived in poverty in St Pancras. One room to eat, sleep and cook. Luckily WW2 evacuation got her out to Luton where she was given a slightly better life.
If Queen Elzabeth the II was raised by such loving, involved parents, why was she a distant, disinterested parent. Her father was King and still an active father. She had Charles and Anne before she was queen and was distant and cold.
Ugh she was crowned QUEEN at 25 years old. 25!!!! Her kids were barely toddlers! I cant imagine being crowned queen at 25, after loosing your father so soon!!! Also, it wasnt until she was around 12 that her father was considered for the throne. Before she turned 12, King George was still just considered the "spare". It wasnt until her uncle abdicated that when she was age 12 her father became King. He was 41 years old when he took the throne. 41 years old with a 12 year old. Vs. a 25 year old with toddlers! In contrast her own children Anne and Charles were 5 and 3 at the time when she became Queen. She had less time with them when they were younger, unlike her father who raised her until she was 12 when he all of a sudden became King at 41, whereas she became Queen at 25.
She was crowned too soon. She didn’t expect it to be this soon. Her father was only 56 when he died! She had a lot to learn as a young Queen. She had to put the job first.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's "eldest" child was Victoria, later Empress of Germany. Their eldest *son* was Albert Edward, later King Edward VII. I really hate it when common information gets skewed like this...
King George found his love in Elizabeth and she supported him all though their married life. Their prepared Elizabeth ll to become Queen. They saw their country through WWII.
Victoria & Albert, Edward & Alexandra, George & Mary, George & Elizabeth, Elizabeth & Philip, to be followed by.....Charles & Camilla. OMG....how the mighty have fallen!
Yes, thank goodness. Charles, a man before his time in so many environmental issues, will be a fine King. His intention to modernise & streamline the monarchy can only be good for the Country. It's a shame that the ignorant are gullible enough only to believe the bad press.....
You know, if they hadn’t been so stupid about “Virgin” brides, Camilla would have been as perfect a match as Catherine is for William. Charles loved her. Period.
Charles cheated on Diana with married Camilla. And they will succeed Elizabeth I? Yes, the mighty will have fallen when those two cheaters become pseudo rulers.
The queen mother was an illegitimate child and thus was adopted by the rich household. There maid gave birth and was ask to leave and the child became married to king George.
"drilled like soldiers by their father" Oh, good grief. They're playing for crying out loud. You've never seen kids playing soldier or similar things? There is no evidence that George ever said that quote about making sure his children were frightened of him.
I kept being confused by thoughts about genetics. George the V, and George the VI and his brother are so similar... And then, from Elizabeth it seems to me that they are taking after queen Mary
I have read about the Queen Mother's nieces, three were only related by marriage. An Aunt doesn't put her nieces in mental institutions. Their parents do. Apparently no one visited these relations including parents and siblings who were more closely related to them than the Queen Mother. Totally agree that if the Queen Mother knew about them she should have tried to influence her relatives to support these nieces and also done her bit. But it's too extreme to blame her for a situation that she had no direct say in. Besides royals have layers of people between them and ' unpleasantness'. Sometimes the sycophants, courtiers and politicians hide things away from royals. I doubt that the Queen Mother's relatives would have relished her knowing about what they sadly saw as embarrassing circumstances. She may have known and turned a blind eye or have been kept in dark. We may never know the truth. Those poor forgotten women! How awful.
S G For goodness sake in days gone by people from all walks of life were put in institutions by both the state & families sometimes for no apparent reason. Pregnancy outside marriage for example. Mental health was not so understood as it is today.
S G It was two of the queen now cousins. Put in some kind of home, never received a card or flowers, no headstone for their graves. Makes one wonder if all this royalty bit is a bit of a charade!
+Juanita Richards Your comment is less than complete. If you read "Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother the official biography" by William Shawcross and the published collection of her letters you will learn why she took so long to accept The Duke of York's proposal. By the time of their formal engagement they adored each other and this continued for the rest of their lives, as every photograph clearly shows.
Elizabeth Bowes Lyon was desperate to marry the Prince of Wales, an announcement appeared in the Inverness paper but he had no feeling for her and suggested she set her designs on his brother.
A very nice job of editing. Not too much but clever. I would pray that you could teach some new, Producers to live by, Quality not Quantity! Enjoyed this relatively familiar story with new, revealing bits added by you. Thanks much..🌸🌺💐🍄
3:19 -- would that scene also include future King Edward VIII? If you stop at 4:07, you see, from left: future Edward VIII, future George VI, King George V
There were commoners who married in long before Margaret. *Henry VIII's younger sister married a duke (her second husband). *Victoria's fourth daughter married a duke. *Edward VII's eldest daughter married a duke Only one of George's children (George) married another Royal (Marina of Greexe/Denmark).
nice video. knowing the history of our countries is so interesting. my greetings from Marrakech, Morocco which is the second old monarchy in the world.
The descriptions in the beginning are contradicted by the historical record. George V had a strong sense of duty that he tried to pass to his sons but was no more "cruel" or distant than the average upper class British father of the times. He was also known to be enraptured with his grandchildren, particularly Elizabeth and Margaret.
Not sure about this. George WAS a pretty terrible father. Fathers in that time were strict, but he could actually be cruel, there's a difference. He did have good qualities though, to be sure. He was an exemplary monarch.
Bellissime immagini. STUPEFACENTE, MERAVIGLIOSO. Davvero MOLTO TOCCANTI, EMOZIONANTI. Fino ALL'INVEROSIMILE! Una famiglia patriarcale BENEDETTA DA DIO. PARADISIACO!
Europe was in the middle of a war. Granting asylum to the Romanovs carried a lot of dangerous political baggage including antagonizing the new Russian government. Monarchs would rather save their own family and put their own countries first. And unlike Russia's divine monarchy, UK's monarchy was constitutional so even if George V did want to save his cousins and their children, his decision should also meet the approval of the Parliament aka the people actually running the country. Unfortunately for the Romanovs, UK's King and the government chose to maintain tenuous peace in the country rather than giving their own people reasons to incite their own version of the Revolution in the middle of WWI. Even Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was third cousin to the Tsar and first cousin of the Tsarina, did not offer asylum despite having a better relationship with the Bolsheviks. The other European royalties were also trying to find ways to grant asylum, but they were also blocked by the same wall faced by UK and Germany. And nobody expected that the whole family will be executed. Maybe if Nicolas and Alexandra had been less foolish and less stubborn, and had actually listened to the Duma's urging to flee while there was still time, then the Imperial family wouldn't have been wiped out.
Perhaps a coward .His wife/queen also blocked the rescue as she was jealous of all powerful Russian monarch and the richest royalty ,at one time, in the world. She being a powerless constitutional figure. The Russian royal family could have been taken to an unknown destination without the world knowing it.
I think she was a beauty! Why say such a thing about a gorgeous queen! Just my opinion! I think her great great granddaughter Princess Charlotte looks just like her!
The queen mother treated people awful and died in so much dept I expect it died with her totally wrong she demanded people locked her boots so to speak. I am just glad our queen Elizabeth married prince Philip there are so good together and good for her. They have given this country more than any other royal has ever given this country I am proud to call them my queen and prince Philip, I always wondered why he wasn't given the title as king because that is how I see him. Princess Anne has also given her life to this country I look up to her too, and her two lovely children
In my opinion they are the only crowned royals to be remembered to this day, (besides being parents of Elizabeth II) but precisely in their amazing life ... She in her longevity and he for the his short and important life! Who managed the face of her as her wife, in the Olympus of immortality and legendary ...
it wasn’t very easy for the queen mother when she lost him. Elizabeth would be feeling her pain now as well. Luckily she lived her life with philip and it won’t be long till she sees him again
The Queen Victoria lived 40 years as a widow, even when her grief was overwhelming. But well, when your lose your spouse at young age, it's another story.
