In 1485, near the town of Bosworth Market in Leicestershire, three armies came together around the landmark of Ambion Hill, to do battle and decide who would be the next to rule England as king. It was the culmination of 30 years of war, started in 1455 at the First Battle of Saint Albans, the first combat of the Wars of the Roses. Many kings would rise and fall, fighting for both the House of Lancaster and the House of York, but by 1485 there was only one Lancastrian claimant left, and his name was Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond. Crossing the channel from exile in Brittany and later France, with a crew of French and Scottish knights, he landed in Wales and marched northwards, being met by his friend and countryman Rhys ap Thomas and many Welsh supporters on his march to Shrewsbury. In the meantime the royal army had assembled: Richard's lords the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Norfolk, as well as the less trustworthy Lords Stanley, William and Thomas. The Battle of Bosworth Field would see betrayal, the fall of the House of Plantagenet and the birth of a new dynasty.

The War of the Roses is one of those interesting little segments of history which is seemingly doomed to obscurity, great to see it covered clearly and with such background.

We know of it, and could maybe provide some dates, but if you asked anyone about why it happened, they probably wouldn't be able to tell you. Much like the English Civil War or Magna Carta.

Luke Koziol Oh i remember the torment of GCSE and A-level history going over and over the Weimar rep. and the rise of fascism in Germany. Became so very dull. Quit A-level and studied International Baccalaureate instead, in which the history course was amazingly varied and detailed. Complete breath of fresh air for my mind.

The English still held Calais until 1558 so they didn't lose all of France by 1453. Richard Neville "The Kingmaker" was actually Captain of Calais and brought over the garrison from there to help defeat the Lancastrians. The Stanley brothers played both sides to ensure that they would always come out victorious. Thomas Stanley stayed in Richard III's camp while William committed his forces on the side of Henry Tudor at Bosworth. Richard III was no hunchback with a withered arm but he did have scoliosis. Like the saying goes, history is written by the victors and the Tudors and later Shakespeare needed to justify the overthrow of Richard III so he got demonized, though to be fair, this had been going on all the way back to the Norman Conquest.

Thank you so much for this video I've just been revising from Richard II all the way up to Henry VII for my A-levels and this was really helpful for visualising the battle. I actually went to the Richard III exhibition in Leicester which is actually on the site he was found and it is an amazing exhibition that for once doesn't actually take Shakespeare's stance on Richard! It has useful information on the Wars of the Roses and Richard and what he did all the way up to his death. It's well worth a visit! 😊

"Various French Knights said Henry tried to take off regalia and hide..." at 19:07. This seems pretty undocumented, especially as any French 'witnesses' were in the Van at the opposite end of the line than Henry. Like he had time to not look like the most expensively armoured man among his bodyguard. So he was protected by his bodyguards: was that "hiding". And Richard attacked, with, surprise, his bodyguards. And we know how that turned out. A Spanish knight Salazar was a witness on Richard's side and said 10, 000 men were killed on each side. Witnesses. Would William Brandon have died fighting for a coward? Just a desperate effort to contrast Richard's bravery. Bravery that his enemies stated they witnessed. Henry took a long shot at the throne. He, too, had personal courage. Accounts to the contrary seem pretty dubious.

Fun fact about the Stanleys: as seen at 10:54 their coat of arms includes the Manx triskelion, symbol of the Isle of Man which they were the feudal lords at the time. The Stanleys were given the island by henry IV in exchange for homage as well as two falcons to all future Kings of England on their coronations. The falcon is now one of the heraldic supporters of the Manx coat of arms alongside a raven.

Still stand by the stance it was Buckingham who killed Edward's heirs behind Richard's back to prove his loyalty to Henry before making his rebellion 'public' and also removing remaining threats to the throne at the same time.
@Knight860
@Knight860 6 лет назад
It's not beyond the realm of possibility that Buckingham intended for Henry Tudor and Richard III to kill each other off or that Gloucester planned to betray whomever won then take the crown for himself. Edward Plantagenet (George Duke of Clarence's son) was just a kid and no one was in the mood for another regency, so that left Buckingham with the best claim as a descendant of Edward III's 5th son Thomas Duke of Gloucester
@Butttcheekius
@Butttcheekius 6 лет назад
Marcus Drake in that case let us agree on Buckingham being a twat regardless if people support Henry (my mummy made me king) Tudor or Richard (rightful king of England with an undeserved reputation but probably not a good idea to keep sons hostage) Plantagenet
@Knight860
@Knight860 6 лет назад
True, people tend to think of royals in the mold of Elizabeth II or her kids and grand kids, when in the middle ages, especially during the Wars of the Roses they were in Tony Robinson's words: "More like Mafia dons, no matter how many people got hurt or killed, it was just business, nothing personal." People also don't see the practical reasons why Richard III may of deposed his nephews (illegitimacy rumors aside), he owned a lot of lands in the North of England, all of which could be snatched from him by the new King (Edward V) who was firmly in the Woodville/Rivers camp and not a fan of Richard. The English lords were also probably weary of another royal minority, Henry VI's was probably in the back of their minds.
@Butttcheekius
@Butttcheekius 6 лет назад
Marcus Drake although Richard certainly did have definite reasons to depose his nephews by declaring them illegitimate he already removed them from being a threat to his reign so it doesn't exactly fit to then go and have them killed as well
@Knight860
@Knight860 6 лет назад
That's true, although Buckingham's revolt initially was started with the intent of freeing and reinstalling Edward V as king, which could tie in with your belief that Buckingham murdered the princes to frame Richard and then drawing Henry Tudor out to take out two birds with one stone as it were. Do you see Buckingham as a puppet master urging Richard III to have William Hastings executed, even though Hastings had been "anti-Woodville/Rivers" as it were?

21:20 The Battle of Towton resulted in the deaths of 28000 men; It was the bloodiest day in british history. 1% of the entire english population at the time died that day. For comparison, the first day of the Battle of the Somme (July 1st, 1916), resulted in ONLY 20,000 dead.

Great vid. Henry would have learnt all the "British"/Khymric history from his time in Welsh castles. If he could establish a bloodline with the ancient kings then his claim would pre-date the Norman and Saxon userpers meaning his claim would not be a weak at all. Hence the red dragon (to fight the white dragon/boar) and so many Welsh supporters. Intresting piece of history for you to look up Huw. BTW - I hope you went to the correct Bosworth field - they apparently put the visitor centre in the wrong place. LOL
@taffyducks544

Ross FigurepaintingCoUK Exactly...However, the Germans on the throne will have a valid claim when William comes to the throne, through Dianas ancestry being from the House of Dinefwr. Two of the major Irish families and the house of Stuart also traced their ancestry back to this House. I suggest you look at the similarities between this house and The Rains of Castamere story line from Game of Thrones.
@RossFigurepaintingCoUK

Funny enough I have looked into this. This theory about Diana's bloodline came to prominence with the book "Blood of Avalon" by Adrian Gilbert. I have read the book and its very flaky and full of holes and assumptions. I follow Alan Wilson's view that it is a load of nonesence. Interesting read though and a lot of other areas covered. And no - I won't be using Game of Thrones for my history lessons! :) LOL

Henry spent most of his time in Brittany in exile. He was shrewd and well aware of the old legends and used them as propaganda. He was only 1/4 Welsh and never bothered much with the country after his victory. Actually, Richard III (and his brother Edward IV) were themselves descendants of Llewellyn of Wales!
@charlesstuart7290
@charlesstuart7290 5 лет назад
It was interesting in the Olivier movie "Richard III' they edited out a scene where some of Richard's troops desert and go over to Henry side which has some historical basis. This edit made much of the Bosworth Battle confusing and its a mystery why anyone would do this. Even when the film played at revival houses the edited version was shown. I saw the film as a young child and for years I thought I had just imagined much of it.

So let me get this straight... the reason it's called the war of the roses is because their houses are represented by red and white roses?! 😲
@mariuspontmercy2736
@mariuspontmercy2736 6 лет назад
ingaman The wars are named for a scene in Shakespeare's Henry VI part 1 where the nobility of England pull red and white roses from a garden to show their support for either the Yorkist faction inder the Duke of York, or the Lancastrian faction under the Duke of Somerset. And the first time the phrase "Wars of the Roses" appeared in writing was as part of a Romantic-era romance novel. Up until the mid-1800's it was just another series of civil wars and rebellions.

I always imagined a bunch of people stabbing each other with roses to the Poison song "Every Rose has its Thorn." Clearly I was very off.

If I remember right, Shakespeare took the story of the nobles plucking red and white roses from the bushes in the Temple Garden from one of the chronicles he used for English history. He didn't invent it. It was likely a London tradition in his time. The two houses of Lancaster and York did use red and white roses as badges; and Henry deliberately invented the Tudor badge of the red and white rose to symbolize the end of the conflict and the union of the two houses. So that much has contemporary authority.

Yes and no, it's a bit intricate really. I'll make a video about it.

I've never bothered to check this, but I've seen some claims that Richard III wasn't as bad as he is remembered (which is mostly Shakespeare's fault). Just before his death, Edward IV appointed him a regent until his eldest son comes to age, but the problem was that Edward's sons were very close to the family of Edward's wife, the Woodvilles. The Woodvilles had been a minor but extremely ambitious house, and after Elizabeth became the queen they started gaining immense power and wealth. They also had a huge influence on Edward's young sons, and as far as I remember (I may be wrong) the young king even wanted to appoint his maternal uncle, Queen Elizabeth Woodville's brother, a regent instead of Richard III. So from Richard III's point of view he was actually protecting his brother's will and preventing the Woodville's from essentially usurping the throne. Of course, this doesn't excuse him for killing his nephews and basically he wasn't handling the situation well from the start and it just kept getting worse.

Your information about the position of the battlefield is out of date. Decades ago, the local authority found an historian to find the exact spot where the Battle of Bosworth Field/Redesmoor had taken place. With the written evidence that he had, he placed it on Ambien Hill, and the local authority opened a visitor centre there. However, when the archaeologists investigated the area of Ambien Hill they could find no evidence that a battle had ever taken place there. So they started excavating other local fields. They found the battlefield 2 to 3 miles from the Ambien Hill site, not far from Stoke Golding. Thomas Stanley and William Stanley had an army apiece. So there would have been four armies at the battle. A couple of minor corrections: Norfolk was a duke, not an earl; Warwick is pronounced Worick, not War-wick.

Google street view has good pictures of the road up to the battle of bosworth and you can get up onto the hill you're talking about and look down across the fields and see the view they would have seen. Recommended. Try this link for the view I found looking from the hill to the fields goo.gl/maps/WBYX5akC25o

Believe it or not, I’m actually related to Sir William Mathew of Radyr, who was knighted by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth. He’s my 16th Great-Grandfather.

I think that Henry VII was also somehow related to Henry VI through his father so that might be another part of his claim to the throne

At 3:28, the Battle of Tewkesbury was fought in 1471, not 1460. The Battle of Northampton was fought in 1460. Also, the Battle of Towton was fought in 1461, not 1471.

One thing bothered me about this video u had the battle order of tewkesbury and townton wrong. Townton ( the bloody snow battle) was first before the kingmaker reinstated madking henry and barnet and tewkesbury were after that time. At barnet the kingmaker died and at tewkesbury the madkings son died (if it even was his son...).
