After defeating the last Plantagenet, Yorkist King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, the new king of England Henry Tudor had to secure his grip on the throne or risk being usurped himself. In this video I'll be looking at how Henry VII consolidated his power as king, involving his actions before and after Bosworth in dealing with both the Yorkist prisoners such as John De La Pole, Lord Lovell, the Duke of Norfolk and Edward, Earl of Warwick, as well those Lancastrians and disillusioned Yorkists who had fought beside him like his uncle Jasper Tudor, Giles Daubeney, Rhys ap Thomas and John De Vere, the Earl of Oxford. I'll also explore Henry's marriage to Elizabeth of York and the first moves he made as king. Hope you all enjoy it!

"Unable to play footage" was good, tho I was already LOL-ing at "Just ask Richard, I have quite the skill with my lance." For some reason, Henry VII being even vaguely filth is freaking hilarious :D

The "mythical" king Arthur? Hmmm.... The Arthurs (more than one) are well recorded if you take a look at some history outside the Danish/Angle narrative. I would suggest checking out some Alan Wilson books and videos as a starting point if you want to learn more the two main Arthurs and indeed the three more that followed. I think you will really enjoy it - a lot ties in with and explains the Angle arrivals that you are very interested in. You mentioned Jasper getting Wales which is also connected. Another interesting video Huw - I hope you produce something on the pre-1000AD British/Kymric/Welsh history too. :)

King Henry VII was crowned as a King by right of Conquest so he was not reliant on his future wife's claim or parliament, I think in part, because he did not know what happened to the Princes in the Tower. I think people thought they were dead but there were no bodies and no confessions yet.

By all accounts Henry loved his Yorkish wife so much he sank into depression and his personality changed after her death. Was absolutely one of the best political moves in English history. But the man loved her , apparently he got his cold hearted ruthless reputation after her death. Make of that as you will

Hilbert would you be able to do a series of short videos (3-5 mins per episode) about the ruling styles and accomplishments of different rulers through history. Like Kazimierz the great, Edward III and alexios komnennos etc. I think it would be an intersting comparison on how different succseful rulers ruled. And therefore seeing if there are similarities between great leaders. So we could see if all great rulers share similiar traits like, bravery, kindness and good administrators for example.
@historywithhilbert146
@historywithhilbert146 6 лет назад
Maybe something like "what makes a successful ruler?" with examples of various people from history? I like the idea!
@Chickentendies1989
@Chickentendies1989 6 лет назад
Also the similarities between edward iii and kazimierz iii are kind of amusing. Both ruled around the same time. Both ruled long and died old. Both whrre the third of their name. And both were of similiar ages. I believe kazimierz (casimir if put in english) older by like 2-4 years. I think and both are thought as some of the greatest kings of their respective country. And both where known to be reasonably benevolent. And both are often depicted with long beards, especially in later years. I just always found it abit amusing

England has never been a French "colony" or something close to this notion. Normans weren't Frenchmen though they spoke French like most of the rulers until the XXth century. If you read the Austro-Hungarian dreadful ultimatum to Serbia in 1914 it was written in French for example. But I have nothing against funny memes as soon as people are able to tell the difference between propaganda and History as I'm sure you are unlike others ;)
@francehasbeenthemostimport9558
@Mallar the Normans settling in north of France were Nordic however the Normans who taking over you were french that happens to nordic blood. Even the Bayeux tapestry is calling the normans as french, enjoy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry_tituli but keep calling them as Viking if it's hurt you so much that they were french lol
@orpheonkatakrosmortarchoft4332
To be fair it is quite difficult to define what is "French" and what is "English" at the time
