I might be wrong, but from 4:56 on he seems to be in shock: his skin is pale, he doesn’t turn his head nor stop looking at the water and is irresponsible. He is selfish, but he feels the pain and the despair.

The only part that looks kinda bad is the underwater bit. Needs more bubbles and murkiness, and maybe cut it down a bit so they're not holding their breath for an eternity. Everything else looks great. It blew my mind seeing this movie as a kid. Not only the CGI, but I felt like I was transported to another time period. Jackson is good at that.

This is not underrated. This was one of the highest grossers of its time.

The full scene didn't advance the story enough to leave in since the characters who were killed in the swamp were irrelevant background characters, and the run time was already long enough. This scene wasn't removed from the film entirely, but it was heavily condensed and trimmed down to only the most pertinent moments. I wish they would've took the scissors to more of the front half of the film because they spent waaaay too much time in New York and on the boat getting to Skull Island. Beyond the visual effects and musical score (which were invented by the original; these had never been done prior to the 1933 King Kong), the pacing was another aspect that made the original so revolutionary too. The original zips along in order to get the audience to Skull Island and to Kong, whereas the 2005 got a little too indulgent on the front half. It spent too much time establishing B-list characters just so Peter Jackson could have an excuse to recreate the infamous lost "Spider Pit scene" in his film. It's a big deal in Kong lore because photos of it from the 1933 film surfaced several years later in the 1960s, making rediscovering that deleted scene the holy grail of Fantasy/Sci Fi films, but the jist of the story is the creator and director realized the Spider Pit scene stopped the original dead in it's tracks, so they removed it. Fast forward 70 years later to Peter Jackson, where he was determined to recreate that scene for his movie. All those B-list characters in the crew the audience was force fed in the first hour on the ship all meet their demise in the Spider Pit. Lumpy, Choy, Lt. Hayes, Craig, etc.- they all died in the Spider Pit. Long story short, Peter Jackson allowed his inner fanboy to grow larger than Kong himself just so he could finally include the lost Spider Pit scene. As much as I love this film- and I really do; I consider it the greatest remake of all time -Jackson would've been better off following the lead of the original filmmakers and removed it from his film also because it added at least 30 extra unnecessary minutes to the run time by establishing insignificant characters.

It's around 1m15s. Very much possible to do, though unlikely given the circumstances he had to hold his breath in. But it would be possible, especially if motivated by the fact that "I'll literally die if I don't hold my breath"

@@BigShrimpin_ Stress and irregular and unrestrained movement severely decreases lung capacity though. I took courses with my fireman grandpa and was eventually able to swim for well over a minute underwater, but it took over a month of training and extremely controlled descent into the water after breathing exercises. And I was already a young fit martial artist, so I already had good lung capacity. It's unrealistic that he managed it that easily. Adrenaline is a useful tool, but ironically the only time it won't help you is when you're underwater.

My original comment wasn't particularly well worded to convey what I meant. I was more trying to say that it's not completely unrealistic, and given that you'd need a miracle to survive that sort of experience anyway, it's only going to be the incredibly unlikely cases that you see. 99% of the time he dies here, either he drowns, or he has to come up for air, any number of factors. What we see is the 1 in a 100 variation where, however unlikely it is, he survives.
