Thanks for the info. I have a client who wanted me to separate her pups from her Sagos, and I had never done this before, she said most of the time, when she did it, they died. Knowing they should be separated in the winter helps A LOT! I also didn't know that they should be left to dry for a time. This was incredibly informative.

Spring is ALWAYS the best time of the year to transplant plants because that way the plants get a full growing season to establish roots

Thank you for your info. Last year i was given a yellowing sago nursed it back to health now its has 11 pups on it. Now i know what they are I guess Ill just have to wait till next winter then do some planting. Impatience is not a virtue!

You made it look so easy! I had a large pup (almost 10 in) that I had to remove first (previous homeowners didn’t keep up the landscape) and it took me hours. I am not kidding.. an ax, spade, saw, trowel, and box cutter were all involved....

I really like your video, so self explanatory. I have always planted them right away and they have taken forever to grow. I see what I have been doing wrong, not letting them air out. Thank you for your information.

Great video! I just ran out and took my pup out of the ground after planting it (too deeply) about a week ago. Can't wait to harvest another 2 or 3 and get them ready to plant! Thanks for the great information!

Hi Marius, terrific info. I got so interested that I checked the sago that I planted as a pup, from the (unfortunately gone) mama plant at least 6 or 7 years ago. I found 2 pups which I removed today, May 17, 2018. They are hardening off in the garage now & I'll plant them in 2 weeks (if I remember they're in the garage!) thanks for all your good knowledge you are willing to share. From one Texas boy (San Antonio born & bred) to another - Howdy! Bill

Good information. I saw in another video, that you want to try to get the taproot of the pup out. That way it has a better chance of survival. If the pup is not damaged, you can plant it right away. Of course, the ones on the trunk would not have a taproot.

I really learned a lt i read up on them but this type of information was not ever talked about. Thank you so much and you elders have to teach us young and dumb like me how to take care and do things. I truly thought they went deeper I have just bought a small one because I was not sure if I could get it to live its small but I will watch it grow. thanks

Thank you so much for your video on this. I completely did it wrong. I removed a number of large pups last fall and planted them directly into the soil. Worse part is I planted them fully into the ground. Huh...no wonder they didn't grow and are yellow. Thanks again. I hope I can still save them.

I was just getting ready to harvest some pups so your video was invaluable. However, mine did not just pop out like yours did. They were all on the trunk of the tree and most were about six inches and it took me all day, plus a fall in the pool, to harvest them. Almost all of them popped out almost complete. What I mean by that, is with a round end and a small amount of white showing. I'm assuming I still need to follow the instruction of letting them heal before planting them, but let me tell you, harvesting them nearly killed me! I'm still sore!

Hi Marius, thank you for your videos. I wanted to ask you if a female sago palm can give male and female pups and if the answer is yes how do I know the difference when they are still pups? I read that when they are mature plants the top is either round or cone and that tells you which one is female or male but the pups don't have the tops yet to see the difference. Thank you

Your videos are great! I just harvested for the first time and pulled off 27. Half of them look just like yours with the angled cut. The other half look like pineapples with some tap root still attached. Do I cut tap root off before drying out for a week?

In front of our apartment complex is a very old and sad looking Sago Palm. It's become intertwined with another variety of tree, so now the apartment manager has decided to have both of the trees removed and plant something new and "more attractive" to look at. Yesterday I noticed that it had suckers, or pups, growing near the base. It's just two or three, but I'd like to harvest those if possible. The problem? It's August! Am I going to have any success doing that in late summer, or should I just give up the idea altogether?
@mrstache1

blondmyk Hi, I was just wondering if you ever removed those sago pups in late August, and if you had any success? I'm getting ready to do the same thing.

I've harvested three pups and planted them using the 50/50 mix you recommend. They have been out doors since last frost. They are very firm when squeezed, I fertilized early on but not since, and potting mix is kept lightly damp to the touch. They are in full sun most of the day. At present they've been transplanted for about two months. How long before new growth should appear?

thanks for the video. My mother had a pair of segos outside her trailer in Monrovia California. I will contact the the trailer park and see if someone can go by and get some seeds. We retire to outer Leander and I should have enough sun for a Sego. If that does not work please give me a contact method and I might get one from you. Thanks for the videos, hers had numerous pups and seeds. They even got stolen occasionally. thanks Dan

i have a female sago in my front yard that is way overgrown by pups i am wondering how many i can remove without damaging the main plant. i took off about 7 pups around 6 inches across and aprox. 12 or more little ones from 2 to 4 inches across. there are still maybe 30 pups around the bottom of the trunk various sizes from 2 to 4 inches. should i leave them there to alow the main plant to recover or harvest them now???

What does it take? A man and his 5 yr. old daughter were at the park in March 2021 . The dad noticed his little girl sitting in the swing slumped over , head down and barely moving her feet. He hurried over and said what's wrong! She replied I miss mommy! The dad swallowed as if he was choking on a baseball and said ; I know baby I do as well. With tears in her eyes she looked up and said Daddy are doctors bad people? He said all people can be bad at times. The little girl asked: is it ok for grownups to lie? He said: no its not ok. She looked down at the ground and said those people said my mommy died with the crown virus but she was ok until she took that vicksoon. The dad replied yeah it took her from us . The doctors fooled us that's for sure . As the daughter looked up at her dad with tears streaming down his face she said :daddy are you still gonna take it? He said no baby I'm not. She said why because you dont want to die like mommy did and leave me ? He said thats right baby and it took your mommy dying for me to realise that JESUS comes first and me and you have to count on HIM for everything. She leaned in to her daddy's chest and said I love you daddy and we love JESUS huh? He said: thats right baby I love JESUS and you and HE surely loves us both.

I followed this teaching but it appears the ones I planted in small pots aren't growing. I have several more but they've been in the sacks since harvesting in the spring. Too late? On the ones I did, as I said I followed this instruction but maybe too much sun, too little sun, too much water......? They look the same as the day I put them in the pots.
