"The game is set in medieval Europe... somewhere" I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if ten million voices cried out in terror and were suddenly angered
This game redefined for me what an rpg should be. Probably my favourite aspect: many quests move on without you. If they tell you "be here at dawn" and you dont show up, they CONTINUE WITHOUT YOU... Brilliant!
@@W00JDA if they say tonight or something along the lines of that, they will leave on their own, but if they say come at xxx time, and nothing else, they will be there each day waiting. Its incredible how detailed the dialogue of side quests are.
i love that feature too, i’m on my third play through and i was on the neuhof raid quest. so instead of going with them i had gone to skalitz for some combat and money. when i had done everything i needed to do i went to the quest and they had already talked to everyone and captain bernard scolded me. easily one of the best games i’ve ever played!
The game is so realistic that even in one of the villages the name's of the villagers are the names of actual people living in that time in the same exact village, as they found a medieval scroll detailing such info about the village
Its ridiculous that we get games with NPCs like this, and then we get Cyberpunk where if you scrape by someone they start panicking and running for no reason, how did CDPR get away with their terrible NPC AI but yet people hate on EA or Ubisoft for downgrading their games, how is it fair to put out below average game mechanics and still be praised, we had better AI 15 years ago
I started of really liking this game, after a while everything got super annoying, the most trivial things are way to difficult, shame seeing as I thought the story was intriguing
@@71hammyman Actually game got rather easier and easier for me? Maybe you did something wrong, by endgame I was swimming in money and the super good gear made fights pretty easy, still not trivial though, which is really good progression imo. I started the game stealing a 100 g sword barely to use, ended it selling those 20 a pop at the same fence.
I really hope both of you have tried Divinity Original Sin 2. The variety of ways to do anything in that game is the main reason everybody I know loved it so much
@Naufal Hafizh red dead 2 had freedom in its open world missions like Aberdeen pig farm and in a home robbery with Javier i told me to hid behind some rocks but i decided to go around and use dynamite and Arthur said he was improvising it seems like the open world missions were made by different people. with that said the main missions go for a cinematic feel their are postives and neagtives to this. in the last mission with Arthur was epic but that was only possible because it was scripted . allot of games have half ass stealth like cyberpunk in example the hacking is pretty basic along with the stealth i was doing mission were i was under level which meant i was unable to stealth kill enemies even though they had hardly any cyper enhancements and they were bullet sponges i hate when games give you stealth but make it level based glad the new ac took that out. kingdom come sounds amazing i don't why rpgs need to be leveal based combat how is that role playing when my decisions are limited to levels.
@@Alextopgaming This game is great, but there are a lot less citizens in medieval Bohemia than in what's essentially a futuristic LA. Would you want Cyberpunk to take up 100 TB to hold a routine for every NPC? No, because no one cares about cyber denizen #32 out of 4 million; but people do care about unique peasant #4 out of 24 in Rattay.
It takes a game like this to painfully reveal how triple A companies have been slacking in the last years, and we have been letting them get away with it.
@@internetexplorer7303 why is a 15sec teaser and a single leaked screenshot of the game years before the game releases a comprehensive view of the games quality
6:43 made me remember an engagement I had in the game with a wandering knight. Both of us were in full plate armour and we duelled for at least 20 minutes without either side making much progress in defeating the other, just wearing down on each other's endurance, armour, and weapon. Eventually, I got a good opening and managed to land a few good hits on his head and the lengthy duel was decided in mere seconds. I absolutely adore this game. Thank you for making a video on it!
I met that guy at the beginning of the game and he beat my ass with a single strike. After that I just stealth knocked out and took his armor. The game became a cakewalk after that (plate = OP), but at least this interaction is something I will never forget.
I've had the same, only i had spent 2 days training for the Rattay tourney, only to spend 10 minutes in the second fight to eventually lose in a few strikes. It made me practice combat even harder, and the next week was basically spent solely at Captain Bernard. When i returned to the tourney the week after, i beat the second guy easily, but got slapped silly by Black Peter. It's so refreshing to not be made the hero, and not being above the other characters in the game. If i'm up against someone who would be better than me, or if i'm outnumbered, i'll lose. Simple as. Can't believe i haven't tried this game until 2021.
It is not located somewhere, it is in a historical region of Bohemia, from where the developers are. And they were trying to historically represent Czechia of 1403 year
Well thats not really true. While the map isnt an excact recreation of the specific towns are very real. You can visit them today if you want to. Stříbrná Skalice is the most beautiful of the bunch :)
There was a guy living in Prague that couldn't pass the monastery quest so he took a 30 minute trip to the monastery, took a tour there, came into the room that he is supposed to go in and solved the quest like that. Magnificent.
Except I and many others couldn't complete that quest because the monastery slowed the games fps to single digits. And although it's my favorite game I never completed it because the level after the trebuchet won't load
@@chickenman1801 I once had this FPS problem, all I had to do was send Mutt home. Don't know exactly why, but I had him following me and he couldn't get inside the monastery, so I guess getting rid of him stopped it
What a wonderful game that did not have the budget of Cyberpunk 2077. We can only imagine what could have happened with the hype and the budget of that let down.
@@anater12 You do remember the launch of KCD right? Cyberpunk is an unfinished buggy mess, but KCD at release was even worse and with even more serious bugs. I can't even remember how many goddamn times i couldn't finish a quest because an npc bugged out or i was shot in the air while doing alchemy. Both are really ambitious games that couldn't live up to the expectations on release for most people, and with time cyberpunk, like KCD did, will get fixed and get more content. In a perfect world game developers could get all the time they need to make and fix the games they want, but sadly they need to push out releases to please investors so they crunch their employees and release an unfinished game.
@@mariozappini7784 Yeah thats right. Its great game but devs wanted to do too much; too many system means more bugs. Some things just arent necessary for it, like saving system. And the worst is battle with multiple opponents, best strategy is to shoot them with arrows ad prey that only one will survive because whole system is made for 1v1 combat. I didnt play at release, but amount of bugs was huge.
@@mariozappini7784 I've played KCD on launch and it was pretty rough, and there were quite a few of game-breaking bugs too, but I don't think it was on the level of Cyberpunk 2077. In Cyberpunk, you can encounter something not working properly almost every minute, and if you stop and look around it's almost guaranteed you'll see something break. You can even manipulate it easily in order for the game to glitch out, like looking away for a couple of seconds for NPCs to despawn, or using shotguns and grenades often results in AI breaking or models getting stuck in textures. There are some bugs and glitches that are almost 100% consistent across all platforms even in cutscenes or scripted sections. While most(not all) of the KCD bugs occurred due to complex and dynamic systems colliding with each other, which is a big difference. And what makes Cyberpunk situation even worse, in my opinion, is that it's gameplay systems and the world is much simpler than KCD, it doesn't have crazy AI routines, it doesn't have a dynamic world or reputation systems, there are no interactivity options like being able to have a conversation with everyone, or get into every house and steal things if you wish. Cyberpunk didn't try to invent a unique combat system like KCD, or complex equipment stats like having visibility and noise values, or having NPCs react to you differently depending on what you wear and the state of your equipment. And Warhorse was a small studio, with a pretty small budget that attempted to do something massive and unique, while CDPR is a massive studio, with one of the biggest budgets out there, that attempted to do something pretty generic and basic in comparison(when it comes to technical things and gameplay), and it's something they already did before. Even though both games had a rough launch, I think KCD is still way better and way more impressive than Cyberpunk if you consider all the things.
@@anater12 FFS. You have that mentality of "IT CAME OUT NOW, I NEED TO HAVE IT NOW", like a spoiled 7 year old. It's not some conspiracy, developers are not out to get you and steal your money, they are just forced to have a result by a certain date. Usually that deadline stress is amplified by impatient fans who desperately need another video game in their life *sarcasm*. Have you seen reviews about Kingdom Come: Deliverance when it first released? Being also a crowdfunded game, thet letdown was MASSIVE. But guess what? I just picked up the game and it's a pure joy to play. No horrible bugs. Yes, I got stuck in a wall once and had to reload. Like in almost every open world game I've played so far. But not the mess people described the game was in the begining. Big projects take big time, get over it. And no, 5 years is not "a lot of time" for a project that big.
@@ChrisBa303 Because usually a "general medieval European setting" is based on France or England which are waaaay different culture wise to Bohemia which is a slavic state
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the only game that made me have a sensory hallucination. There are some mines at the top right of the map that was so realistic in the audio and visual design that for a couple seconds I could vividly smell cold damp moss which I had smelt while in a local slate mine near my house.
When playing with a headset on and the soundtrack off I find that I can almost smell the wildlife when I'm riding across a field or when I'm in a forest or whatever, I've never played a game with a world as immersive as this
@@lukimarzi596 bro i swear i also a few times could smell the after the rain grass, even horse dong! On god bro kc:d and fallout nv are the only true games a played single player in a loooooooooong time. Beautiful work
Kingdom Come Deliverance was also the game I wanted since I was little. A dream come true. I was waiting for it since the first few bits and pieces they showed at the beginning and they didn't disappoint one bit
There's an easy to see reason why and that's just because it's not casual enough. Most people just want to sit down and play rather than spend hours learning mechanics about a single game.
@@EredarLord Well yes if you want to word it like that. It's why so many people like the way the last of us plays. It is easy to jump straight into for an hour and then go do something else. By no means is the game bad but it is not for the average casual.
@An Altmer Elf Of course its a great feeling and that's what makes the game so good and different but it's just not easy to pick up so most people drop it.
In early 2018, I knew nothing of the medieval history of my own country. This game interested me so much that it set me on a path of learning. And made me angry that our schools don't teach us our own history.
@@kenetickups6146 I'm gonna share my american experience because they didn't specify the country they were speaking of, but it really did feel that way back in school. They only tell us the most terrible, heartbreaking, and emotional charging events of history. They only tell us the lifestyles of the poor and how terrible they were having to resort to all sorts of things to survive. In my experience it was events like ww2 they heavily focused on and they really painted the picture that history was terrible to live in. That's before you get into the comparisons they would make if you were of a colored race, or diverse ethnicity, or a woman. It's true.
I found myself being reminded heavily of Morrowind throughout my time with KC:D. It's everything that I loved about Morrowind in a modern game. It doesn't hold your hand. If you need to find something it might give you a general area but you have to actually find whatever it is. I spent countless hours just exploring randomly to see what I could find. I spent a ludicrous amount of time on my first playthrough (just finished actually) and I'm already considering starting again. Kingdom Come is my favorite RPG of probably the last 10+ years. Maybe even ever.
@Old World Blues does kingdom come have 1/4th of a story or cyberpunk? kingdom come felt quite long to me, unless thats just me spending time on other stuff
Whenever people are excited about elder scrolls' radiant AI system I can only think how gothic 1 and 2 had a better system in place before morrowind was released
@@4tCa4mzUPqRZZo The gog versions run better under win10, but you can still get the steam versions to run as well. Just be sure to install the dx11 renderer, it improves the technical aspects in many ways. As for which game to start with, Gothic 2 is much more polished and refined (for Gothic standards anyway, it can still be pretty janky by normal standards) so i prefer it, but it is a direct sequel so you're definitely missing out on some context, although the game does a decent job getting you up to speed. The main difference is which scenario you prefer, Gothic 2 has a very authentic and cool medievel vibe to it, with villages, farm houses etc, kind of like Kingdom Come, while Gothic 1 is much weirder as it is set in a prison colony inspired by Escape from New York, which some find more interesting and unique. Heres a link on how to install the dx11 renderer: www.worldofgothic.de/download_590.htm It's in german, but pretty self explanatory. All you have to do is install the game and the 4 patches in the correct order, which is displayed under "Installation"
@@4tCa4mzUPqRZZo You should start with Gothic 1, if you go with the second part first you will miss many references to the 1st one. You can find tutorials on youtube on how to get the game running on a modern system and with DX11. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: Play the game with either polish or german voices. The attempt to dub this game into english was a complete disaster. You won't be able to take anything seriously and every memorable and emotional moment will turn into a cringefest. Reading subtitles is a small price to pay. You can find many tutorials on that. In the end it will be worth it, trust me.
@@4tCa4mzUPqRZZo gothic 1 is great, the setting (a magically-sealed prison colony) is much more unique and compelling than the bigger but more generic gothic 2 setting, and the english VA is perfectly fine. The extra “polish” in gothic 2 people go on about is super minor stuff. If eurojank is a deal-breaker, both games are a no. For configuration and mods/bugfixes, check out the steam guide page.
This game really is something special. It gave me the same feeling that playing oblivion or Stalker did for the first time all those years ago. Happy to have backed it on Kickstarter, and can't wait for Act two!
This game is so unique imo. There's something about the section in the monastery and the hyper "realistic" alchemy that really did it for me. And the Oblivion style levelling, oh man, it had me picking all the herbs in the opening area and I didn't even mind.
It's so hard to get into though I got it 2 years ago or something and played it for a weekend. It immediately pulled me in, but due to exams coming etc I had to take a break and never started it again, but in the two days I played I spent 20 hours in it
As a gamer since the early 80s, this is one of the very few titles that captures the spirit of some of the early RPGs, which didn't have the graphics or resources to lean on. They had to tap into your imagination and make you feel like the world was boundless and alive. They had to hold the player accountable to create a sense of realism, and that sometimes meant brutal and harsh lessons that could set you back hours. KCD does have all the modern advantages but never leans on them like a crutch, just leverages them to take it all to the next level. Yes, the game has bugs, and you'll see things like clipping or the occasional ragdoll bug. In other games those become reasons not to buy the game, or meme videos, and yet in KCD they're forgivable because of all it does right in creating a believable world. I'd rather take 100 "unpolished" games like this than yet another super-polished spoon-feeder triple AAA title that is a mile wide but an inch deep.
KC:D needs all exposure it gets. I dismissed this game for very long time because it was from kickstarter, so it will be probably horrible cash grab. Now I can say it's my top 3 games. It even beat Gothic as my favourite RPG.
I rewatch this video every few months. This game is absolutely, without a doubt, something special. The quality of everything; the simulation, the ost, the graphics, the moment to moment gameplay, is just astounding.
[SPOILER] What shocked me the most about this game was when they needed me to help someone in the hospital and when I came back to the mission after a few days everyone was already dead.
While Tess voice actress looks nothing like the game one. Game model was a small streamer called "Umrusamaskockama" (meaning: I'll die alone with cats)
My favorite exploit was when this guy ambushed me on the road and after 6 tries of fighting him and dying, I went around and snuck behind him and assassinated him. Even though I was clearly under leveled, it felt great to find an alternative way to deal with the problem. This is definitely my favorite rpg of all time
Excellent speaker and script writer. Its rare nowadays i can go through a video without checking time, my phone or when the video has pased. But this had me all the way through, great video.
@@SaturatedCat no it's not, it's funny how you defend your ignorance. Aren't you aware of the religious divide for instance? In the "eastern european" cultural sphere you defined that encompasses all of the slavic cultures there are 3 religions: eastern orthodoxy, roman catholicism, and islam. These cultures use different scripts and have different cultures. Read about Central Europe on wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe It seems that you and the people you know are a bunch of ignorant racists. Putting Germanic and Celtic cultures in one group... jeez.. just like the Nazis, who talked about the "eastern hordes" and were later fucked by them.
It is the ultimate peasant simulator where actual training feels so rewarding. When I reached the end of the story and I was treated as a revered knight, it felt really like I had worked for it.
RU-vid’s been doing that a lot recently I noticed that nothing but the video I was on at the time would load, weird. Pretty sure it happened a while back too
This video made me buy the game and i've been playing it with my brother every day for a week, i know the video is a month old but i wanted to thank you anyway. Thanks Philip!
This game has made me truly comprehend and sit with just the realities of how horrible it could be in this time. The raiding of Skalitz made me have more perspective into the chaos and suffering. Truly redefining what i love in games.
@@Alphonselle Yeah I find it funny how often people say "you're a nobody" when overviewing this game. While I suppose from a raw gameplay mechanic perspective that is true as you are pretty terrible at doing everything useful at the start and get better through skill training, it's not very true in terms of storyline, lol.

You may be the greatest gaming-centric RU-vidr on the platform, Philip! All of your videos (even the boring ones about nerdy tech stuff) have such charm and atmosphere to them, it feels like more than just a video and more like listening to someone in person tell a story..
This game is sooo underrated and was looked over so hard when it came out. I played it a couple of weeks after it came out and I loved it so much and still come back to it from time to time. It's such a great game, I liked the fact that even at the end of the game it is still difficult to fight more than 2 enemies at once and you'll probably end up dying to them if you don't play it right.
That mission with the priest has to be the funniest quest i ever played in a game i also never laughed as much at a game before. The whole Game is just labor of love and you feel it.
Let's be honest, Kingdom Come Deliverance is just straight time travel. Very vivid experience, the color palette and lighting is really accurate based on Czech's inclination. Cyberpunk is no match.
I actually bought Kingdom Come as an alternative to scratch my itch for playing an RPG after refunding Cyberpunk 2077 the first week, and how much the latter was a disappointment so much was Kingdom Come a pleasant surprise and hidden gem.
cyberpunk is lifeless and tries way to hard to cram "rpg" mechanics like having a pair of jean shorts have an armor rating based on level. triple A studios have really forget what it means to be a roleplaying game (except obsidian and Bethesda hopefully bethesda we have yet to see anything from starfield)
You saved me from boredom, rn RU-vid and google broken, and cant browse RU-vid till a notifcation shows glimmers w/ hope pops-up on top of my phone screen.

One of the best rpg's I've ever played. From the setting, the music, the gorgeous graphics and sound, the combat, the character build, everything is amazing and so well made
>me playing the game because it's set in my homeland >Philip: "It's set somewhere, eastern european" >feeling unreasonable anger for being called eastern european and my country "somewhere"
My favourite part of the game was the absolute dead silence when I was sneaking around the country side at night, stealing and killing everyone I seen. It was eerily terrifying and yet so simple and unique, every game would have some sort of background noise, in kcd, at night, there is nothing except the wildlife. The atmosphere was excellent.
I agree with what you say here. I played this right after Skyrim, and it’s now my absolute favorite game of all times. Being from Europe this game made me feel at home, and I wanted it to never end.
Wow, just wow man. I've watched many of your Elder Scrolls videos, and now this one. The amount of effort and quality here is insane, and probably some of the highest quality gameplay/review I've seen on RU-vid. Keep it up man, you're doing great work!
This wonderful game left such an impression that I still click on every new video that see of it even though not actively searching anymore. I bought it at release and gave up because of the punishing save system that I didn't understand and the impossible lock picking. The bugs didn't help either. Then I went back a year later and I was so captivated that I started three different playthrus and finished all the dlc's. A woman's lot was one of the most balanced and nuanced treatises of medieval religious discrimination while still feeling exactly like a video game. I was so immersed that I did the whole pilgrim's journey barefoot and in tatters "praying" that no one would attack me 😂.
Was finally able to play this game with high settings at 4k thanks to the recent GPUs launching. What a beautiful world they have crafted! Last thing I expected to see you make a video on but glad you did.
