That cutscene description was incredibly inaccurate. It didn't take 20 minutes, no mention of Heart or Darkness, and I completely understood every character's motivation and the general plotline

"Acquaintanceship Is Witchcraft" When you're balancing on such a fine line that people are right on the 50% of whether you've intentionally dug really deep into something, or are just so blissfully on the cusp of it that you somehow manage to stumble across something 10 miles deep into enemy lines without noticing.

So guys, we did it, we finally got Yahtzee to review Kingdom Hearts.

It fucking annoyed me every time one from the organization tried to explain something to Sora, and then Donald or Goofy are going "are you really gonna believe that?!" when it was the truth they'd been told. Just seemed like an excuse to me to try and extend the plot and keep Sora in the dark, and that just further made me realize that for a main character Sora is easily THE character who has the least grasp or understanding of what is going on. Add to that that he has the mental capacity of a 3rd grader, in that whenever someone, bad or good, tries to explain something to him that is more advanced than "go wack this thing with you key until it stops breathing" he completely tunes off. I used to really like Sora and his motivating friendship speeches, but at this point they are actively TRYING to make him stupid.

What you forget is that Friendship is magic BUT MAGIC IS HERESY

The problem with the story and lore of Kingdom Hearts, is not that the plot is complex and confusing. Many long time franchises have long and convoluted plots, but when you start to understand them, they are deep, rich in lore, entertaining, well thought out, or just insane. When you dig into Kingdom Hearts story, and its lore, you notice how lame and hastily made it all is...

It's not so bad when you get your shortcut menu set up. Then your hotcast spells are all easier to get at and flow into combos much better. Just put Cure/a/aga on all your quick slot menus for the sake of your sanity. As far as the plot goes, most people agree that KH 1 had the best plot because it was the simplest. Disney villains are using evil monsters to steal people's hearts, and your childhood rival and your shared love interest are both missing into the void, and oh look, you just so happen to be the chosen one. Go sort it out.

I think SuperButterBuns described it best when she said this is a game for fans. If you go into this as a new player the plot is going to seem like the greatest confusing Trainwreck you’ve ever seen. Probably the same for some of the controls and such. EDIT: I should’ve been clearer but I was referring to the story and the controls (mostly) when it came to fans. Although people have brought up really good points on why it can also be considered friendly enough for beginners or why it’s not a total fan game.

As a fan of both Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, Yahtzee still manages to make me laugh every time.

That kingdom hearts conversation is pretty spot on. That's kind of why I love the series so much. It's like a staple that you weirdly end up loving.

I think the type of "incomprehensible" Yahtzee would enjoy is one that actually leans into that fact, and from what I've been hearing Kingdom Hearts doesn't do that; it *wants* you to take its stupid shit seriously. And before anyone wants to yell at me, here's a distraction: Super Mario Maker 2's gonna be a damn good game, am I right?

Kingdomhearts 3 wasn't as great as 1 and 2. You could really feel the iron grip of Disney in this one. All the Final Fantasy characters have been purged from the story, and there was a watermark in the "Let it Go" sequence. Some interactions between FF and Disney characters were great, like between Auron and Hades in KH2, but you just didn't get that this time around. (Also the game was piss-easy, the mega boss of this game was so easy I don't even remember it's name, just like how I never had to remember how to block for it.)(Also, the part of the game where Sora completely gives up hope. Like dude, Riku was still there, every other time you would have been plucky and fought, but this time you are gonna sit and cry? Please.)

As a note, _Chain of Memories_ , _358/2 Days_ , and _Dream Drop Distance_ *are* the reset buttons. The first two explain why his powers were reset between _KH_ and _KH2_ (long story short, he died and turned into a soulless abomination of nature, his body came to life and got special powers from the soul-crippled kid snoozin' in Sora's heart, his soul came back to life and convinced reality it still had a body, his soul was convinced to go play card games in a castle made of mind-affecting drugs while his girlfriend's soul's body used his noodle to make memory spaghetti, the crazy hoboes in black robes made a clone of him that unintentionally started to vacuum his powers out of his body, his body started to grow its own soul by the power of ice cream, his body had to kill the clone and cause everyone to forget her, and then his body went on a rampage to get revenge for the clone, while Mickey & the Sephiroth wannabe and some other guy got the memory-mashing girl to put Sora's mind back together by using his body's soul and his soul's soul as a jigsaw puzzle made of mind screw), forcing him to learn how to be a protagonist again. And _3D_ was about Sora and his best friend the Sephiroth wannabe intentionally forgetting how to use their powers so they could be trained to use them _properly_ , instead of just flailing them about like an emu with a toy sword superglued to its wing. Meanwhile, _Birth by Sleep_ was background stories for a few characters and the series as a whole, including the kid in Sora's heart and why his soul was crippled enough that he needed to chillax inside a small child to heal it. And _coded_ was the story of how Mickey's blog came to life and they had to use a literal author-insert Sora clone OC to figure out why; it turns out that the journal remembered that it was supposed to remind everyone about all the people hangin' out inside Sora, so they could figure out a way to get them out. This is a _weird_ series. 😛

The "Acquaintanceship is Witchcraft" slide makes me wonder if Yahtzee watches Jenny Nicholson.

It's funny to me that most people haven't figured this out yet... -no final fantasy characters -no final mix -verum rex= a shot at ff15 which nomura was originally in charge of making but then kicked off Kh3 is an industry product meaning nomura barely had any real say when making this title and it shows. Kh1 was entirely his creation,it held very deep themes and its sole purpose was to be relatable to irl but too many people overlook that and simply have made the series into a fanboy gimmick. When something becomes popular it is no longer the creators ,the industry takes it and makes it their own. This being a reason why many creators,artists ECT always state that their first projects are their favorite,because it is entirely their own work...
