Looking forward to the Cinema Tony. Woolworths was the first big shop to arrive in our town, where i lived unti 1964. Fine Fare and Tesco followed. As you say, records, Pick'n'mix also, torches ,batteries, clothes, and garden plants that was in the 60s. Fond memories indeed! Thanks. All the best.
Hi Tony. Yes I remember 'Woolies' . We had one in Derby when i was a boy; in fact one of my sisters used to work there and my mum used to take me with her shopping. She would buy me a toy that cost a tanner (six pence in old money) which was always 'Made in Hong Kong.' On Kingsway Kits, I've often looked at these kits and especially the fire stations and police stations but space is the issue on my lay out as I'm sure it is on other peoples. They also do some really good freebies. Anyway, thanks for the video; I'm looking forward to your work with the others.
Good evening Alfie. I must have bought hundreds of singles from woollies. some of which i still have today. Great and happy days. Police station, and fire Station or even a bus station could accommodate the space i have before the tunnel that goes into the storage yard. take care my friend. all the best Tony.
"Nothing in this store over 6d" puts Poundland to sham lol. Great bit of kit bashing Tony to suit your needs, I miss going to `Woolies` on a Saturday morning to get my weekly fix of sweets before going to the cinema as a young lad happy days. Many thanks for sharing regards Barry..😋
Morning Tony, sorry I'm late watching this week. That's a nice kit, oh I do remember Woolies. They were responsible for taking much of my pocket money in the late 50s and through the 60s. Not only the pick-n-mix but airfix model aeroplanes, records and so much more. Back to the kit, it's a really good idea to highlight some of the lines like on the pediment it brings the 3d effect to life. That area around the windows and doors looks so good. When you finnish your back scene it's going to be amazing. Also adding the extra plinth at the top is excellent. Really don't mind which is next, for me the Odeon brings back memories of "Saturday morning pictures" when I look back we did have the best of times. Things are a lot better here with Anne she's getting some tone back and not dribbling anymore when she's drinking her cup of tea. Hopefully another couple of weeks and we'll be there. Love the you both stay well, Eddy and Anne xxx
No need to apologise Eddy. spent many Saturday mornings going to wollies for the latest records. and the change went on the pick a mix's. that was the good old days. That's great news with your dear Anne, give here my regards, and Laura sends her regards and love. take of each other. all the best Tony. & Mrs T....
Hi Tony, great kitbash! I have fond memories of Woolies and it is a shame the department store has lost its appeal. You have really brought these kits to life. Plenty to think about. Cheers, Dave.
The popcorn is on me! I've just caught up with the build of the Saracens Head which is great. I'm scracthbuilding a pub I drive past every day to work, the Bell on St Cross Winchester. Cheers@@TONYNORTHEASTERN
These kits are an easy build for you, but by limiting yourself in depth, gives you a challenge to make it fit. You seem to be enjoying doing these as a break from your usual scratch builds. we had 'Woolies' out here in New Zealand too(They are still using that trading name but it is a supermarket chain owned by the Australian conglomerate Coles). .I too think that you should choose the Cinema. When I was a boy there was 1 movie theatre that on a Saturday morning had a Chum's Club that showed A couple of cartoons, a serial or two before 1/2 time, when you had enough time to toilet and que to get an ice cream before the main movie, that ended at lunch time. Was given a 'bob' (1 Shilling equal to 12d [Pennies]) and that was our entry fee, plus an ice cream and some Jaffas (small red hard candy coated balls of chocolate) that some ended up being allowed to roll down the wooden floor during the movie. Heard about the snow storms hitting the UK and hope you and Mrs Tony are safe and warm. Take carer my friend. Arthur
Hi Arthur, the poll is way ahead for the cinema to be built next. which hopefully i should start this evening. someone had already said that wollies is still going in Australia. I have always known pennies and pence. i must out on the half a crowns and sixpence. thanks again for your interesting comment. stay safe Tony.
Wow Tony! Your building of a Woollies has evoked a lot of memories, must of which I share. An excellent build all round. You make it look so easy. Hope you’re having a great Christmas. Playing catch-up with videos again. Roy.
Glad you enjoyed it Roy. i hope you are having a great Christmas. we have just come back from a classic car rally. man i was in second heaven. time to put my feet up. woollies was were i always got my records from. shame that its all gone. thanks again fr commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
Hi Tony, Woolworths, I used to do much the same, pop in for some pick and mix and buy a record, happy days mate. It’s another nice kit and it’s going to look so good in the row of shops at Jarrow Road. Cheers for now, John
Good old Woolies, a very fitting model and similarities to the Littlehampton and Chichester ones. Like the extra cornice and step detail/ enhancement, you did well again reducing the depth, both buildings nicely compliment each other. They are quite reasonably priced too. The pic n mix was a weak point of ours. My son got the Hornby Intercity 225 set for an unbelievable £20 in their post Xmas sale, still got it too in its box, yet to DCC it! Happy days, such a shame not around any more. All the best Stephen
Good morning Stephen. I can see what you mean about the resemblance's. this kit could go placed in any town. I do miss our woollies. they were always busy. well so were our town centres back in the day. Wow what a bargain with the intercity set. take care my friend. see you next time. Cheer's for now Tony.
Hi Tony. Those kit are very nice, You have brough them to life. Not came across them before. Nice video and looking foward to the next. Regards Alan :o)
Loving watching you build these kits Sir Tony. They really look great. My other half n I, were shouting yeah, at your recollections of Woolies. I bought records and pick n mix there. The other half said, she bought her first ever Steam Iron at Woolies too. Ah the memories. Thank you for stirring the memories and sharing the video. Much appreciated.
Memories that's all we have of woollies. its a shame they shops are gone. but not here at the north eastern. thank you for commenting. all the best. cheer's Tony.
Enjoyable as usual, Tony. Your goodies are now packaged up for posting on Wednesday morning, as at Hexham Hospital tomorrow. I’ll be sending it ‘signed for’ so that I get a tracking number to send to you. Best, Jason.
That looks great to Tony. They certainly look nice kit's might be something to put on my long to do list. Look forward to the next update....cheers James 🙂👍
@TONYNORTHEASTERN I might just do that, Tony, although I do have several Petite Properties kits to build. But hey, one more isn't going to hurt, is it 😁👍
Dear Tony, Michael from Chandwell did a very interesting vid, just last week, on transparent UV protective applications. His comparison mainly included the difference between brand inks and generic ink products, where he prints most of his textures on his Canon inkjet printer. The difference he showed was stunning. The generic ink covered with the UV protection faded just quick as the unprotected version. The brand inks held out better, but he added that longer exposure to sunlight may show those inks may fade as well. Personally, I’m not fond of transparent UV applications. In general, they tend to ‘yellow’ more and compered to opaque UV resistant paint, their performance is significantly below average. Curious to what your experience will be with the test pieces you’re planning. Took a look at the Kingsway site, they definitely got some great models, although mostly in 1:76! Great build, curious for the next ones and the Yarrow Road backdrop! Plus the promising 3D effects these kits will create for your other backgrounds! Cheers
Hi Vincent. i have some on order, and hopefully the U V paint spray should turn up before this series of builds. that has been my concern with these kits. but hopefully the spray should do its job. thanks again for commenting. all the best Tony.
Nice work and I like seeing the little touches you add, as well as the historical originals. It really brings it together in the mind. personally, I am all in on the pub!
I have to say Tony, I have been really impressed with these kits. Clair just saw the intro and really liked the Station Arcade or whatever it was called, so that is always a good positive! 😄 They seem to offer a really good compromise between ease of construction and level of detail. Love the options they give you too, because you can always try the other bits on other projects later of to add to other kits. Like the look of that pub too. Julian on Station Road made up a lovely old 1970s pub kit which considering its age looked awesome with a few added details, and that pub looks almost like a contemporary version of it! 😎 As for the next one, I reckon go for the cinema next 1) cos there are lots of boozers on the layout already so at least everyone can get a drink easily enough if they don’t mind a good walk and 2) after buying all the pick n mix, they’ll need somewhere to eat it all and throw it back up again when they’ve had too much. All part of the cinema ritual isn’t it? 😂 3) on a more serious note, I think the cinema should be the next major building along in that street scene as the pub can be popped on the corner, maybe (if there is room) have the street curve a little or have the tavern offset and proud of the other buildings, which I have seen in plenty of places before now 👍🍻🍀
Good evening Tim, As we speak the cinema has started. it comes with a lot of choices for the movies now showing. there is a poll going to choose the movie you want me to add. so what will it be my friend. many thanks again for commenting. Best wishes to you and Clair. cheer's for now Tony
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN: Done it, had to be Casablanca! One of my all time favourite films. I’d even put a support feature like a Harold Lloyd or Laurel & Hardy short 😉
Love your Woolworths build. As a child I remember going to the one in Bakersfield,Ca. USA. It was a 3 level building. I think it closed in the mid 90's. But the Luncheonette counter cafe is still there. They were a feature in Woolworths in the USA. Were they also Luncheonettes in the UK stores? Bill from California
Lovely kit Tony, Saturday down to Woolworths to buy a pocket money Airfix kit, the pick and mix were great as well. A great addition to your street scene
Good morning Colin. those ere the days. get paid on a Friday with cash. Friday night on the town. Saturday spending what left in Woolworths. thanks again for commenting cheer's Tony.
Hi Kevin. Surprised you again. yep just never know when i will pop up. on wards and upwards my friend. the steps stabilized the building. as these wont be glued in place. take care buddy. Tony
Hi Tony. That was very enjoyable as always to watch. You have kit bashing down to an art! lol. Quick question though. Unless I am mistaken those building back onto South SHields station. If that is so then it is in the middle of the layout with views from both sides. Unless i have missed something in your previous video, what plans do you have for disguising them from the other side?
Hi Mav. i agree they should be on both sides. this is just a temporary set up. for measuring and to show comparisons of the size of these kits. thanks again my friend for commenting. cheer;s for now Tony.
Tony, would it enhance these kits if the window glass areas got a dab of high gloss clear after squirting them with the UV protecting matte? It need not be mullion to mullion, just a hint of gloss on each pane to reflect light.
I suppose you are aware that Woolworths are alive and well in Oz as a supermarket chain. I don't think there is a connection with the English or American chains. Coles in Oz used to run variety stores more like the English Woolies, and now we also have The Reject Shop and Cheap as Chips chains of "dollar shops" which cater to the budget minded among us.
Good morning Dave. i have to be honest and say that i did not know that Woolworths was still in OZ. i know there is a Brach in Kiel Germany. but its a sad loss to us here in the UK. many thanks again for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
