The Gerrit Rietveld Academy disinvited us after student diversity complaints. This is our film about it.
Background:
The Rietveld canceled our premiere of KIRAC 12 '100% Integrity' with art collector Bert Kreuk after 'diversity' complaints from students.

Thanks to everybody who came to the premiere of this episode and talk about Safe Space en KIRAC in De Balie April 26. We enjoyed it very much and it was great to watch the film together.

The whole Rietveld affair was a very moving, complicated and interesting event for us and it was great that everything seemed to somehow fall in place yesterday evening. We think it helped us make one of the best Episodes thus far.
Curator Steven ten Thije deserves a lot of artistic punishment and I hope we gave him a good one in this film.

I very much applaud Kate for engaging in this discussion. She reached a lot of people in the crowd and she reaches a lot of people here online by daring to step into these hugely threatening and mono-cultured environments. That step alone is a powerful one that shows others that this CAN be done. Many don't even realize that these days. Also, contrary to her KIRAC colleagues, I never see any spiteful tendencies, just powerful blows that land precisely where she aims. No "tough" behavior to shield herself from others and their arguments. I find this immensely powerful, and I see a very strongly principled core behind that. This goes much further and deeper than just "trying to be a good sport", even though it is indeed much more confusing and disorienting, and less immediately rewarding, than the "tough" approach.

Just wondering why there is no mention of the absence of Zanele Muholi in this great metaphorical exchange of poetry. Not only is she not on stage here, there is no sent-in statement of hers, no mention of a "no comment" statement, not even a discussion or bare mention of her perspective.

Blij dat KIRAC bestaat. De collage van confronterende tactieken (soms pesterijen), intellectualisme (soms drogredenen) maken spannende en stimulerende tv. Voelt voor mij aan als een soort reactionair postmodernisme. Iedereen die ik erover spreek heeft een andere mening. Heel scherp. Ik denk dat de invloed van KIRAC ook meer is dan simpelweg trollen, maar een frisse wind door de ingedutte kunstwereld.

Ik vind het lastig onder woorden te brengen hoe blij ik werd na het zien van deze film. Het is niet enkel de boodschap die gebracht wordt, of de manier waarop, waarvan ik onder de indruk ben. Ik denk ook dat dit een van de eerste keren is dat ik mensen uit "de kunstwereld" dit geluid hoor maken. Dit komt vooral omwille van het feit dat de SJW-cultuur bijna nooit in debat wilt treden over hun mening en/of reden tot annuleren van een spreker omdat deze door een paar mensen als bestempeld worden. Poog je daarnaast op redelijke wijze een gesprek aan te gaan, gaat dit gewoonweg niet omdat ze daar niet open voor staan. Dus ook respect voor de Rietveld academie mensen die uiteindelijk wel het debat aangingen. Hopelijk helpt het hen in de toekomst een wijzer besluit te maken als er een groep leerlingen eist voor een boycot van een spreker, op basis van valse beschuldigingen. Het is niet KIRAC die vermeden had moeten worden; maar de groep die het boycot opeiste, daar zou die school eens een gesprek mee moeten voeren. Ik ben namelijk toch echt van mening dat die groep gekwetsten, die vaak hun eigen leven nog maar net half half op de rails kunnen houden, de boel flink aan het verzieken is. Hoe moeten mensen met zo'n kortzichtige mening, iedere vorm van discussie vermijdend, ooit goed kunnen functioneren in de maatschappij? Als academies als de Rietveld dit gedrag blijft belonen door boycots (etc.) toe te kennen en studenten die mensen vals beschuldigen, serieus blijft nemen, hoop ik dat ze inzien hoe zeer zij zelf niet enkel een deel-, maar gewoon de bron van de problematiek zijn. KIRAC, dank voor dit werk! Respect voor jullie houding en mening! All the best for the future!

Apparatsjiks die vluchten in geheimdoenerij wanneer hen alledaagse maar kennelijk ontregelende vragen worden gesteld over Kunst. Panisch dat ze in deze identitaire tijden een van de vele zelfverklaarde kunstenaarszieltjes kwetsen. Wat een benauwd paranoide wereldje, als de dood voor hun 'reputatie' en om 'ontmaskerd' te worden als biassed door wit privilege. Noordkoreaans gezellig daar...

In the art world, here in Australia, we are fully sedated by institutional white guilt and the PC machine. This has given rise to the most boring, self righteous work by artists of all races who have stepped into line, ticking the right boxes and being richly rewarded. KIRAC we need more voices like yours! Keep up your great work.

Let me start by saying that this is impressive work by KIRAC. A video critique created and edited by eloquent and intelligent people. This being said, I believe the final confrontation with Steven ten Thije is not reflective of this. It is not constructive and consists of personal attacks on a man who in the end is supportive of an open debate (whatever his personal relation to art is). I believe that the interviewer at that point descended to an immature level because he just walked out of the heated plenary discussion with the Rietveld board. He should have controlled his emotions, should have conducted himself more professional - as he himself seemed to have forgotten ''merit' for a few minutes.

Fedor Baflowski (partially) agreed. And to then end the video with a cop-out that this was just a poetic exchange is a bit lame. This discussion IS important and the whole point is for people to finally actually mean what the hell they're saying. The final discussion wouldve been more interesting if it was more focussed on what the curator was doing rather than dismissing the core of his humanity. A bit of ad hominem to provoke and get him to show his true face is fine, but this just pulls up his defences, and a calmer approach could actually provide the opportunity to even MORE properly dismantle the coward (cause in the end, sure, i actually do agree he's a douche merely hiding behind a facade of openness)

needed to revisit this: I'm not so sure even if the curator is such a coward. Perhaps by saying that I'm being as much of a judgmental prick as the guy interviewing. Cause actually - we get very little of the opinions of the other people, while we get a lot of sarcasm from Kirac that's tempting to just go along with, but this kind of editing doesn't properly show the differences in opinion that lie at the core here.

To samwellboy, I agree that heat of the debate at the end could’ve taken a more ‘open’-ing route. The exchanges about responsibilities in institutions and the ‘I’ and ‘We’ as who speaks for who in the various bubbles of art, its making and its circulation. I think Rietveld as an institution did a poor job in treating the panel like a hearing, thus failing to accommodate the nearly-fruitful discussion that was attempted at the corner of the staircase. Also, this video blankly shows how difficult it is to nurture polarising methodologies at Art Academies and institutions that are more like controlled incubators than the actual field. It has been fascinating to follow kirac in their coverage of the different ‘fields’ of the art world- the commercial, the public audience, collector, curator, etc. But this video has only shown the growing pacifying effects of institutional power. The fact that we can’t carry a debate without getting fed up or offended is very bleak. Of course kirac gave us a lame ending, because the whole ordeal was lame. Perhaps a follow-up episode on ‘polarity’ would do these debates justice?

Volgens mij houden Steven ten Thije en Stefan Ruitenbeek gewoon heel erg veel van elkaar maar durven ze dat niet te laten zien voor de camera. Aan het eind merk je dat als Steven zegt 'ik maak toch onderdeel uit van je kunstwerk', waarop Stefan schrikt, 'Steven wat doe je nu', denkt hij, 'Dit moet je bewaren voor straks in de kroeg'. Bang dat het spel uit is, doet hij er een schepje bovenop en wordt nog eens extra boos op Steven zodat wij kunnen genieten. Goed gedaan Stefan!

@KIRAC Wow what a strong moment in dramaturgy around minute 13. When the protagonist sums up her kafkaesque experience of the trial. She does this by paraphrasing the novel by kafka called the trial and connecting it to how she felt at the time. My psuedointellectual ego got a great boost from this game of not referencing but referencing. The genius plottwist from kirac is: she concludes she got carried away by this kafkaesque feeling. And the most kafkaesque aspect of her story is that she at one point felt she had to take the critique seriously after flinging a rather controversial article into the public domain.

I think what is also evident from this video is the amount of compromise a project such as yours would have to go through for it to be granted an opportunity such as being shown on Netflix. I much prefer the idea of this content being present on youtube where you have more control over how you communicate, which allows for a kind of objectivity which is severely lacking in most if not all contemporary art press.

If you want to preserve the integrity of art you need to let the individual tell their own story. Art is always a personal relation between the artist, the object and the audience. No one really controls the relation, but generally the artist initiates the relation. What the Gerrit Rietveld Academy is doing is writing the narrative for artists. By doing so they are narrowing the creative possibilities by rendering some artistic outcomes as "undesirable".

Die Rietveld directeur die op 15.22 bij het applaus n.a.v. wat Kate Sinha heeft gezegd quasi verbaasd zit te kijken en dan (als ik het goed versta) het woord "wonderlijk" zegt als reactie op dat applaus. Iets verder in de video fluistert hij de andere Rietveld directeur het woord "disrespectful" in. En daarna de gespreksleider die slim denkt te zijn, de inhoud ontwijkt en het discours probeert te veranderen door op een intimiderende manier over "kinderen" te spreken en die intimidatie af maakt met de opmerking "snol" in de richting van Kata Sinha. Ongelooflijk wat hier gebeurt van de zijde van de Rietveld Academie. Gelukkig reageert Kate hier briljant op en daarna weet deze mijnheer niets meer te vertellen. Dus neemt hij de volgende ontwijkpoging en stelt zich op als de redder van de studenten....

Geweldige aflevering dit, wat heerlijk om jullie te horen debatteren! Toch vind ik die Steven ten Thije een indrukwekkend figuur. Ik begrijp waarom je zo op hem inhakt, je wil gewoon een barst zien ontstaan in die muur van beschaafdheid en redenatiekunst die hij om zich heen heeft gebouwd. Hij gaat de echte issue als een slang uit de weg.

I very much enjoy what you expose as institutional standards of control by these gate keepers who sterilize art for public consumption. As a stone sculptor I want to pound them and you do an excellent job of that by penetrating the facade that lingers like the scum on the surface of a pond obscuring the reflection. They are in the way, these gate keepers of fragility.

It's nice to see a debate against political correctness. But the format of KIRAC episodes, especially the over the top and annoying narration, is totally killing it for me. If you feel you are really that intelligent (which you repeat constantly whenever you're not bashing on Netflix in disdain) and think your audience is too, let them make up their own mind. That's what art and discussions should be about. In short you guys got some good points, especially the girl, but you'd be better off dialing down on the somewhat arrogant tone. Be open to what the viewer makes if it. Its okay to be truely vulnerable. Enter the void.

The irony is that Rietveld has become a machine that parts spoiled brats from their money. A bit more diversity in the student body would go a long way towards elevating the artistic output, which seems largely designed to appeal to a jaded intellectual in-crowd.

Laatst een gesprek met Ben Zegers over kleine Structurele verandering in communicatie tussen studenten en docenten; tegenwoordig spreekt hij zinnen die waar zijn, van de Rietveld site lijken te komen en niks zeggen. It's great. Annelies van Eenennaam is nog steeds een zwakte. Bedankt voor deze video, learned some more over waar we mee in zee zijn gegaan.

Ik vraag me dan toch wel om hoe je met een kunstenaars identiteit omgaat als deze artiest zijn/haar persoonlijke ervaringen als (in dit geval) iemand van kleur en iemand die lesbisch is. Als de verhalen die die kunstenaars willen vertellen samenlopen met de kunst die ze creëren, is ze dan een self-entitled snol? Kunstenaars uit de 17e eeuw schilderden vooral mensen van een hoge status of slaven als decoratie, zijn zij dat ook righteous snollen geweest?

You may be thinking, because of his boyish in-over-his-own-head demeanor, that Steven ten Thije deserves your pity. But in reality he's about 38 years old, probably makes the equivalent of 60-70K USD/year salary, and he's shrewd enough to have calculated that he is the acting face for an organization within which he's a nonessential administrator. So he deals with taking responsibility for the KIRAC cancellation by deflecting blame, and putting on pitiable puppydog eyes until his enemy tires of trying to browbeat him into admitting doubt in his purpose, or at least issuing a return fusillade. As far as reflection goes I've got a hunch that Steven never gave this conversation a second thought

You have to take his role and agenda as curator into consideration if you want to citicize his responses. He does have to balance some forces in this position. I think you can argue he can do a better job balancing in favor of better art. Some good points were made but it was ugly form and you should appriciate this persons willingness to engage and listen to you, even in the face of your tirade against him.

I agree partially, but what Stefan revealed here is that Steven truly is just a pawn, not thinking for himself but for 'we', which he claims to be the art viewer, but in reality is just his fellow peers with the SJW-mindset and/or maybe even just PR motivated. This deeply conflicts with his important role in the art landscape and should not be dealt with using the kid-glove treatment.

Geweldig! Toch goed dat jullie in het hol van de leeuw een debat voerden, niet om de tegendebaters te overtuigen, maar om de ontvankelijken in het publiek (ook online) te bereiken. Gevaarlijke curator die alleen kunst toelaat die in zijn maatschappelijk straatje past.

Dat laatste stukje, over dat het allemaal alleen maar een metaforische uitwisseling van poëzie is geweest, dat is wel heel erg Jerry Springer's final thought. Ik heb een discussie gehoord en gezien, een flinke discussie, waarin soms ook goede argumenten werden gegeven, vooral door Kate en Stefan. Jerry Springer die aan het eind dan nog even moet vertelllen dat de soep niet zo heet gegeten wordt als 'ie wordt opgediend en even policor gaat zitten doen, dat was een misser.

het was een verkapt excuus: hij snapte ook wel dat ie zich als een boze hansworst had gedragen in dat laatste interview en dat 'ie daardoor totaal ineffectief was. Als hij daar in dat laatste stukje eerlijk over was geweest was dat heel mooi geweest. Maar helaas koos ie voor een laffe uitweg waarin ie zijn publiek niet serieus neemt. Soort van "oh ehhh het was maar poezie hoor, ik was heus niet echt boos"... alsof wij niet konden zien wat daar werkelijk gebeurde,.

Ik was al helemaal verliefd op Kate maar die gozer, sorry... heb je naam nooit opgevangen (bewust althans), waarmee deze aflevering begint, dat hij kate wakker maakt met zijn gehuil/lach over roodnat/rootnat?, die is ook echt meesterlijk gewoon. Love you! Meer!!!!!

Eens in de zoveel tijd kijk ik deze video terug. Heerlijk hoe alles juist wordt geanalyseerd. Maar het is toch overduidelijk dat jullie veel intelligenter zijn dan de mensen waarmee je de discussie voert, is dit niet vermoeiend voor jullie? Hoe maak je dan je punt duidelijk? Los daarvan, op welke partij zou kate stemmen alleen op basis van de plannen voor de culturele sector?

what are they fighting for? against "bad art" for the sake of "good art"? i understand their anger towards the show. its easy to make fun of it, but attack Zanele Muheli like Kate did, was racist. because she didnt wrote, why she thinks, Muhelis photos are bad, she attacked her for being only shown, because of being lesbian and black. But Muheli can not for the sake of art, stop being lesbian and black, or according to Kates words, being a spoiled brat--- and why does it makes her photos "bad", when they portray this open ...Muheli herself...But yeah...Its also ok and understandable to dislike Muhelis art, or to criticize it or maybe completely reject it, because it doesn't meet someones scales, of what art makes "good" art. I'm sure, the filmakers could explain their displeasement with more valid arguments, instead of just mentioning Muhelis character, skin color or sexual orientation. But, its not at all about Muheli or her art, its about themselves. and so is the academy. Whats interesting is, is that nobody in this film seems to care at all about Muhelis art. Everybody is using her appearance in the show, as a tool to gain power or control over each other. So- I don`t see it like the good warriors for good art (KIRAC) vs the bad and phony stupids and artkilling bureaucrates- but a shakespeare like drama, about how humans cant escape their inner demons, and how they avoid at all costs to reflect themselves. no matter what good intentions they have, or what they claim to fight for. so... I think this film -as well as the other episodes...is good art.

Thank you for speaking out. As much as I respect KIRAC’s mission to dismantle the current art world’s prioritisation of predetermined ideological art, Muheli’s art is simply her art. Granted I too think it is not good and that galleries pander to this kind of art, Muheli catches a stray and is called a spoiled brat because of it? People like KIRAC do not recognise the privilege of not having to live a life where your blackness is inexplicable from the rest of your persons. Constant reminders of your difference in every space. While I don’t think that an admission of white guilt and pushing works into the gallery is equality or equity, the ignorance on Kate and Stefan’s part is quite frustrating. Yes she isn’t a great artist, but KIRAC as critics have failed the viewer by acting as if her sexual and racial identity is being manipulated by Muheli as a way to win in the art world. For some of us, our identity plays a major role in our persons

Interessant om te zien. Wel vraag ik me af of je dergelijke betogen ook in je jonge jaren voerde. Dat schrijf ik uit oprechte interesse. Is het nou inhoudelijk of 'n bredere frustratie? In ieder geval lekker bevlogen en stik eigenwijs. Wel lange zinnen en een beetje provocerend. Vraag me dan weer af of je in gesprek met hen een oprecht antwoord hoopte te krijgen, en als die kwetsbaarheid zich dan zou openbaren, of je je eraan zou hebben durven haken. Zomaar wat gedachten 🪅

Mooi om te zien hoe Kate met een zekere rust en ruimte reageert tijdens een debat. Het zou niet de eerste keer zijn dat een goed tegengeluid een snelle dood sterft omdat de persoon in kwestie het niet weet te 'verkopen'.

Wat zijn ze in het kunstwereldje snel op de teentjes getrapt. Ik dacht dat kunstenaars juist sterk en zelfverzekerd in hun schoenen moesten staan om hun kunst te kunnen maken en te kunnen verdedigen.

Omdat het ongeletterde ambtenaren zijn. Of geflipte voorlichters. Aat Veldhoen was daar meesterlijk in. Die ging in de jaren 80 live op de radio een discussie aan over de waarde van het leegstaande, verpieterende Koninklijke Paleis op de Dam dat weer voor het volk moest worden ingeruimd, met een voorlichter bij de entree van het stadhuis die van schrik plotseling koningsgezind werd en als een lakei van het vorstenhuis Aatje's revolte probeerde af te schudden met een Sissy sprookjesverhaal.

Tweede keer dat ik dit zie, moest weer hardop lachen vanaf 15:39 :PP Rofl . Waar nog niet over gesproken is, is dat er maar beperkte plaatsen/subsidies etc voor kunstenaars zijn. Stel dat Mondriaan nu had geleefd en nog door moest breken. Dan had A. van Eennenaam zijn werk bekeken en gezegd : "Neh, veels te wit " . Dus , hoeveel Mondriaans moeten wij nu missen door deze manier van werken. Is idd de dood van de kunst. Iets anders ; lijkt me leuk als jullie avondjes organiseren, een lange tafel of iets dergelijks, "Discussies met Kirac" .

The Netherlands has for the longest time had a cultural elite determining what is art and what is not. The pretentiousness is horrendous in every aspect of our media culture. You can't be a dissident in the eyes of these people, because you are to short sighted or short minded in their eyes. While they should look in a mirror and truelly think why there are people that want to challenge their way of thought. Mainly because it hurts society, culture and actually the liberal mindset that made the Netherlands great. It's probably not the artist but the marketplace that has become overly politized and pretentious, because the market is dominated by baby boomers whom believe in sheltered thought. Plus it doesn't help that the wealthy and the rich whom know nothing about society are the main players in the art scene. Rich families that buy up art so they can put it in their charity so they can evade taxes while storing the art in their private collection as a financial asset. It's also why i would never walk into an art gallery, because that does nothing for me.

Over het algemeen maken jullie echt supersterke punten en zo ook het merendeel van deze video. Alleen het einde was wel een beetje zeikerig en de man had gewoon gelijk met zijn "wij" standpunt, waarschijnlijk zit hij genoeg in meetings om op de hoogte te zijn van de gemeenschappelijke wens.

respectfully, to me, this just looked like a bunch of white people arguing about whether a critique was racist or not... what about actually inviting a black person into the conversation? or better yet, the artist themself? are there no black people at that school? as much as some valid points were made, this whole thing seems counterproductive/pointless. the film would've been more nuanced had you involved the very people who's art you were all speaking about. meaning, you can discuss it all you want but at the end of the day, white people don't get to define racism.
