I watched a doc on Kiribati and Tarawa of 2017, people were afraid because of climate change and was told in a few years no one would be there. I believe you visited the same areas. I am glad to see the people and the families are still there.
spitfire red From what I can see, Kiribati (particularly on Tarawa) certainly has problems - with overpopulation, unemployment, salination of wells and flooding of agricultural land (which may be getting worse). But I don't think the country is going to sink any time soon. Reef islands appear and disappear all the time. The present sea-level rise rate of 3 mm a year is not going to do too much damage. And half of the islands of Kiribati (such as Banaba and some of the Phoenix islands and Line islands) are not coral atolls but raised islands. The i-Kiribati will be able to tolerate current climate changes, just as they have been doing for hundreds of years. Their biggest problems are social, not geographical.
@@jakartaharpman You say these things as facts, as if you have been on and off the islands for decades. May I ask you, since you say these things with such security, as a pacific islander I wish to know. Based on what do you say these things with such assured measure? It is kind of funny since ofcourse, when the inhabitable surface of an island decreases, then ofcourse in comparison, the population density will increase with all the by-coming factors. Flooding will ofcourse also gravely affect available drinkingwater and wells as well as sanitation systems and the flooding of agricultural land. Don't you notice the contradiction in your own comment?
Sorry - just saw your comment. Certainly I don't say anything with certainty; I'm definitely not an expert! But there a numerous articles and papers documenting evidence of land accretion on Pacific islands - such as www.google.co.uk/amp/s/api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/news/2015/02/150213-tuvalu-sopoaga-kench-kiribati-maldives-cyclone-marshall-islands. I do think there's a problem - not because the islands will necessarily completely disappear, but because of the extensive infrastructure (buildings, roads, power) packed into a small area. This infrastructure is definitely threatened by "shifting" land areas. Regarding Kiribati itself, remember that the country is much more than just Tarawa Atoll! The two "outer" island groups in my video - Butaritari and Abemama - seem to be thriving, and land is not so precariously threatened as on Tarawa. And then of course you have Christmas Island and even Banaba, which is actually quite high above sea level. But these islands are less developed, and moving the population to them would definitely be a major operation! In a nutshell, I believe that the debate about rising sea levels (currently 3 mm per year) is important for these islands. But I don't see them disappearing any time soon. They will adapt.

Kiritimati (Christmas Island) will not go under water any time soon,unlike many of the smaller neighbouring islands.There's talk of relocating the Kiribati seat of Government to the island as the present capital Tarawa is overcrowded and more prone to inundation from the ocean.A new fibre optic communications cable has just been laid on C.I.and there are some substantial buildings under construction.Unfortunately progress has been held up due to the world-wide Covid19 pandemic.Personally I doubt anyone will be returning there until all the islands occupants are vaccinated.
