Kirriereoch Hill | Solo Mountain Camping in THICK FOG

Kirriereoch Hill is a boggy, pathless and rugged mountain found in Dumfries and Galloway - offering fantastic hiking and plenty of space on the flat summit plateau to pitch a tent for a remote wild camp on a mountain top. The hill itself used to be classified as a Corbett but has since been demoted to a Donald - it is still worth your attention though, as it offers fantastic views over the Southern Scottish Wilderness!
On this trip I approached Kirriereoch via forestry road beyond Kirriereoch Farm, though other approach routes include Shalloch on Minnoch, Tarfessock and Merrick. I'd hoped to camp on the mountain top and enjoy some landscape photography above a cloud inversion, but unfortunately, the usually reliable forecasts (MWIS and Mountain Forecast) were wrong and my efforts were thwarted. Instead, I was forced to walk and to set up camp in zero percent visibility conditions and persistently strong winds as the light faded around me.
I still had a great time on the hill though, with some interesting light phenomena taking place in the wilderness far below me giving me plenty to think about as I whittled away the many hours of winter darkness and poor weather and of course, as always, I enjoyed hiking and camping with my dog Coops!
Notes;
The scientific name for my experience with the lights is the 'Autokinetic Effect'

Hi Dave, thanks for watching! There's a big moor near where I live and the weather is consistently brutal there, used to pull 12hr shifts loading lorries with scaffolding in it, not nice haha! Nothing to stop it! This section of the Galloway hills lies on the seaward side, so they get battered a lot :o The masonry is a bit of a dying art these days unfortunately, like a lot of the old skills :(

@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Thanks Steve! Aye, it’s a bit of a pull, especially with a rucksack. Kirriereoch can be broken down into 3 main sections; longish walk through forestry and the squelching through a particularly wet bog, a sustained, steep pull up to a glacial erratic and then finally a couple of km of a whaleback ridge, just enough of an incline to really sap your energy. Up top it’s a lovely, large grassy plateau with great views (hah!). Definitely worth its previous Corbett status - and very easy to descend if you’re careful on the wet grasses 🙂

Nice video mate. Shame the weather never turned out. I went out Friday night at Ben Lawers direction for some astro as it was meant to be crystal clear. Ended up 50% clag 50% clear but the moon was too bright for any stars to be seen. Was also out in the hex Peak. Brilliant bit of kit, love the tent 👍

Hi Adrian, I mind you saying that, it would appear that Saturday was the day to be out (argh) Nice to hear another Hexpeak is doing the rounds, god I love them! :D Full moon is excellent for mountain photography if it's bright enough, it creates such a surreal atmosphere! I'd love to see a lunar rainbow, saw someone captured one at Loch Enoch very recently :o

Hi mate, thanks for watching! I cut it out the video, but I kept seeing more and more lights in the fog and thought someone had found my motor deep in the forest and had called Mountain Rescue. It wasn't until the fog cleared a bit I could see that they were nowhere near the hill :o The Hexpeak is fantastic & the Optimus coolest/windshield are brilliant, super efficient :) All the same to you and yours!

Nice one chief, good night out regardless of views, looks like if you were about 50-100m higher you might have been above the cloud. The dry stane dyke that's on Suilven is rather strange how it goes across the saddle, rather than across the hill. Chiefs/lairds marking their land. 🤔
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Aye, it was good to be up there, I could see the Merrick here and there as the cloud shifted but it was just as clagged in unfortunately. Was going to jump up there in the morning, but it would have been pointless. Always next time though! Aye, that is a weird one, I hope to see it for myself in the next year :D I've done a bit of digging and the Galloway dykes were built by lairds to divide up farmland - apparently the independent farmers weren't happy because it messed with their ability to make money and they started pulling them down as they were being built :o Good old Aristocracy, eh!

A wee pea-souper right enough this one. Maybe it was the light people doing it 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm itching to get out but don't have an opening until the start of January now so it was good to get an outdoors fix. I'm looking forward to getting out, in a tent, in the dark, and on a hill. There's just no better feeling. A merry Christmas to you when it comes mate and all the best for next year too 👍🏼
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Aye, I'd have been better camping down the bottom, haha! I reckon the main light was Kirrireoch farm and perhaps the 'pool' was a yard light or something. No idea where the other lights came from though, as there's nothing else down there. I did look it up and found out that the 'woosh' effect was autokinesis, pretty interesting and another wee lesson learned! I'm the same, I've got so many plans and yet very little time, makes it tough. Hopefully you manage out and get your fix asap! All the same you and yours sir, hopefully 2022 is a marked improvement on this year :D

Well it was another great test for the Hexpeak , I hate it when the weather doesn’t play ball. Those wall builders must have been hardy souls out in all weathers I guess ,and without the gear we have to keep us dry these days. They do make for great navigation aids tho especially in bad weather . Next year is my mission to do some Galloway camps atb Dave
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Aye, another affirmation of its strengths! It's a fantastic piece of kit :D It's a shame about the weather, but I had a good time regardless and I got a cracker of a shot just before the walk, so can't complain. I remember my grandfather telling me about the drovers of the highlands when I was wee and it always put things in perspective for me. Hardy people sleeping behind walls in nothing but an overcoat in all weathers! It was a different world back in those days - I don't even know how old that wall is though. Galloway is definitely worth it, as I've said before. A true sense of wilderness! Thanks for watching mate :)

@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Hi Gordon, aye, there was a wee bit of a clearing in the cloud, but the Merrick was fully clogged in as well at the time, which would have been the highest point. The densest fog seemed to come from the corrie between Kirriereoch and Merrick (Red Glen) whereas things were a wee bit clearer around Shalloch on Minnoch to the north - didn't have time to go there though! Maybe next time :) I didn't figure out the lights, the only one I could confidently place would be Kirriereoch Farm, perhaps the 'pool' could have been a lit yard/garden or something. The effect I was going on about is called Autokinesis though - which has an interestingly similar example to my experience on the Wiki page. Thanks for watching!
