Shalloch on Minnoch | Winter Mountain Camping in EXTREME Cold Weather

Winter wild camping with my dog on a Scottish mountain in extreme winter conditions and heavy snow. This is my coldest wild camping adventure to date, with temperatures dropping to minus 15 degrees!
As the snow continued to fall upon the Galloway hills, I knew I had to get out there & tick another location off of my list whilst I had the chance. For my next adventure, I chose Shalloch on Minnoch (775m) on the Range of the Awful Hand - a Corbett with fantastic views over the Rhinns of Kells, the Dungeon Hills & Tarfessock & Kirriereoch hill towards Merrick.
After hiking through the heavy snow in whiteout conditions I pitched my OEX Phoxx 2vii tent close to a corniced ledge above the Maidens Bed. With a near constant wind-chill of -15 and with only a boulder as shelter was an experience that I won't forget in a hurry... Filming was incredibly difficult at times & as you'll see, I was covered in ice from the very beginning!

Great to see my local hill looking so well. Must have climbed it 10 times in 2020 with the Highlands being out of bounds. Great video.

Great video, never been in that area. What a nice morning you had there and no wind! Impressed you knew the names of all those hills, they look all the same to me:-] Cheers Jonas

Hi mate, thanks very much! Aye, it can be confusing at first, but once you start poring over the maps looking for routes (or to seem educated in the videos haha) you start to remember them!

Brilliant mate, ever so slightly jealous. Looked a bit monochrome at first, but you pulled it off. My old GoPro used to die quickly in the cold. Fine if I kept it in my pocket between filming.

Thanks Robin! I'm very lucky to have the Galloway Hills as if I didn't I would be going stir crazy at this point. With the latest snow they have been a fantastic remedy to missing out on the Highlands. The majority of the ascent was 0% visibility with bare snow to look at, definitely had an affect on my psychology as it was like struggling up through limbo. This particular hill is rather featureless until you get close to the summit - so very easy to lose track. My GoPro did ok considering, ate three batteries + one battery I recharged over 24 hours. You'd think they'd be better insulated given they're advertised for use when skiing etc.

Aye, the wind totally died at about 11pm making for a wonderfully peaceful night in the tent, waking up to clearing skies was very much a relief as the forecasts had been way off the previous day 😬 Plenty more to do in Galloway! If you haven’t already you can check out my previous videos from the Rhinns 🙂 Thanks for watching!

@@MALLY_DAGS_TV Hi mate, glad you’re enjoying the videos! 😊 Which Phoxx do you have? I have the Phoxx 2vii (had the 1vii before it but it was a wee bit small for me and the dog) and it’s a cracking tent for battening down the hatches! The only reason I went looking for the Lanshan was the weight and overall living space :)

Mines the phoxxiiv2 The only thing I do, is what I’ve see others do, is prop the door open with walking stick an and bungee to cook, but a bigger vestibule on one side would make it an outstanding cheaper option
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 3 года назад
Aye, I've tried this myself in the past, but tbh it's not much use in inclement weather when you need to have everything closed up & secure. I'd considered a secondary tarp as well, but at 2.1kg (got mine down to 1.9kg, see below) I couldn't justify the extra weight. Forgot to talk about mods; the only things I have done were switching out the bungee rope for super thin industrial dyneema loops (allows me to really anchor the fly down), tied knots in the loops so that the fly/inner doors were kept a bit tighter & swapped out the pegs for MSR Groundhogs @13g Each. I also just stuff the tent into a compression sack instead of folding/rolling, which reduces the pack size to something smaller than even the Phoxx 1 standard size.

@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 3 года назад
It's a 'Boundless Voyage' 900ml Titanium mug - 750ml is as much as I'd boil in it though. Makes for a satisfying coffee/hot drink & very light at only 142g :)
