I developed a brand new respect for I Still Love You after the Unplugged performance. On Creatures I always thought it was good, but missing something. On ALIVE III, I thought the lead guitar work was better (Hail Bruce!!) but when they did it Unplugged, they finally uncorked its potential in a powerful way.
Great list. Crazy Nights will always be my first pick, frankly of all KISS albums. I love the early stuff but my introduction to KISS and 80s metal in general was a milk crate of cassettes passed down from an older cousin when I was like 8 or 9.
Hey, thanks for sharing. Crazy Nights was the first KISS album I remember buying with my own money, so I still look at it fondly. And thanks for watching! Next video will be on the KISS albums post Revenge... coming this weekend!
Such a good video. I consider myself a Kisstorian also. I study Kiss like a school subject in college. With that said, my opinions of Kiss have always been polarizing. I usually have opinion that differ greatly from MANY fans. As an example of my odd Kiss opinions…I’d put Destroyer tied with Unmasked as my least fav Kiss albums. I despise: Beth, Do you Love Me?, Great Expectations, God Of Thunder. I despise them so bad that it lowers my ranking so bad. But I Love hearing Kiss fans opinions no matter how different. A fan base with such different tastes means you truly are diverse and offer a little for everyone. Unmasked - LOVE naked City. Crazy Nights - Such a mixed bag. High highs and low lows. Thief in the Night crushes. Lick It Up - Pretty solid The Elder - Solid…but the songs I like, I LOVE. Creatures (Solid) Animalize (Underrated) Asylum (Trial by fire is my least favorite but this album is Solid AF) Hot in the shade - I only dislike 2 songs: Cadillac Dreams and King Of Hearts. For whatever reason, I love it. Revenge (I have nothing bad to say about this. And Unholy? It’s my favorite Kiss song of all time. This is also my 3rd fav Kiss album.
My personal ranking of these albums: 9. Music From “The Elder” 8. Hot In The Shade 7. Lick It Up 6. Revenge 5. Asylum 4. Unmasked 3. Animalize 2. Creatures Of The Night 1. Crazy Nights
@@HairMetalGuru419 I was 11 when this album came out. The first album I ever got was ALIVE!, followed by Love Gun, Dynasty, then Unmasked, so I was used to KISS sounding different every album, and I thought nothing of this one continuing that trend! I didn't know we were supposed to hate them for sounding different when I was a kid! Is it perfect? No. At the time I didn't care for the instrumentals or Mr. Blackwell, but these days, especially with the proper tracklist, and being older, I really like most of these songs! And "I" just might be my favorite KISS song! I've carried that message with me for [redacted] years, especially Gene's "... don't need to get wasted..." lyrics. I've often said that if they continued on doing the same thing after Love Gun, album after album, "fans" would bitch that they had a "formula" and couldn't do anything outside the box. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Whew, ok, defense rests!!
Creatures of the Night 🌙. I respect your rank of this as Number 2. I go further: I make this as my favorite. 🤘 Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance helped turn Kiss around. Rock and Roll Hell is my favorite song in this album. 😃 They almost pulled the track when Gene Simmons insisted on adding a 3rd verse. But the 2 Canadians permitted Simmons to do so. Source: Jim Vallance in his website and interviews. That Kiss 💋 session also led to Don't Leave Me Lonely. Written by Eric Carr, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Gene Simmons rejected the Eric Carr sung demo, claiming "too much pop". Thus, Bryan Adams recorded his version for the next year, 1983. Treated as a filler, but sounds polished! The 2023 version has better singing technique than the 1983 version. Thanks 😊 to Mutt Lange.
I never really understood how people thought Paul was rapping in 'All Hell's Breaking Loose'. I just don't hear it. It is a great song however. I LOVE 'The Elder"! It is bizarre in every way and a beautiful disaster. It has solid songs on it but gets panned for it's peculiarity. I'm not sure how I would rank this era of Kiss but I definitely put 'Hot In The Shade' last. That album is terrible. 'Read My Body' is their worst song by far, EVER! Nice video Guru, please do more Kiss, keep up the good work!
Cool show!! KISS fan since 76 so for me…… 9. Unmasked 8. Crazy Nights 7. Hot In The Shade 6. Music From The Elder 5. Animalize 4. Revenge 3. Asylum 2. Lick It Up 1. Creatures of The Night
@@RockandrollNegro I used to have Revenge at 1 until the last few years it’s dropped off at bit to me. While Asylum has really jumped quite a bit in recent years
No way is Revenge better than Creatures!! The drum sound on creatures just kills! They were back with a fury! As with the 83 tour Revenge saw them playing smaller venues and not selling out! Just the fact they were still in makeup on creatures is a plus in my book! My list completely different but that is the beauty of music! #1 Creatures #2 Lick it up #3 Revenge #4 The Elder #5 Animalize #6 Asylum #7 Kiss Killers #8 Hot in the Shade #9 Crazy Nights #10 Unmasked
New watcher here, I heard the hate about Bolton but he actually made some pretty great rock albums, first with Blackjack and then self-titled in 1983 and everybody crazy in 1985. I love Fools game fantastic song. For me, my favorites (most hair metal) are Asylum, Crazy NIghts and Animalize. I don't like Revenge at all (I don't really like post 80s kiss to be honest), but to each their own.
Interestingly, both Hide Your Heart and Sword and The Stone (eventually released by Bonfire) were created for the Crazy Nights album, but were rejected in favor of songs like "Bang, bang you" and "no, no, no". If not for some bad decision-making, Crazy Nights could have featured 5 Billboard 100 songs, instead of the 3 they charted.
My thoughts: I would've swapped out The Elder and Unmasked, and I personally felt that "The Oath" was an absolute face-melter of a track. My biggest disagreement, though, was I would've swapped out "Burn Bitch Burn" and "Thrills in the Night" in the "shit" and "great" categories. "Burn" was absolute cringe while "Thrills" has been on my playlist for damned near two years straight. I surprised - and as a Kiss fan from the 80s-90s, a little disappointed - that you didn't mention anything about Eric Carr's passing. Other than that, solid list!
IMO 80's era Kiss honestly has some of the most memorable tracks of their career. The classic 70's era was fantastic, but the 80's period is waaayyy too overlooked by both fans and the band themselves.
You really think so? It sounded cookie cutter follow the new trend to me. Bands just had to have the "shredder" on guitar which to me eliminated the rawness and emotion when your trying to play fast as possible hitting every note precisely. May have been that the music wasn't all that great and to younger kids into new bands like Motely Crue,Ratt and Dokken,Kiss were aging rock stars from the 70's and didn't appeal to them.
Well this is tough, especially early and late 80’s when they were a bit lost. 9.hot in the shade, crazy nights, Mf the elder, unmasked, animalize, asylum, Lick it up, revenge, 1.creatures of the night. I would not say any are bad albums. Revenge and creatures of the night to asylum is definately period best of this time. In australia and I don’t like shandi either haha. Dynasty is great I think and unmasked was a lot weaker.
