KISS are both one of the most beloved and the most hated bands in history. With them being called a "Brand" not a band. With Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley acting as the Lennon and McCartney of the band. along with other superb musicians all through their career. This is KISS Part 2, detailing their career though the seminal heavy metal album "Creatures of the Night" to their most current album "Monster".

shinnox -That's not 100% true. Only 50%. Because in theory there is two Kiss's. The 70,s era and The 80,s era. I love the 70,s(original) version of Kiss but find the 80,s version, well, irrelevant. It's the 70,s version that got them famous. And to me, the 80,s version is like left-over dinner. And also, in the 80,s, Kiss is more of a brand than a band. In the 70,s they were a band, a band of brothers. 4 of the SAME guys touring the world for almost a whole decade straight. Now that's a band! That didn't happen in the 80,s because they kept changing guitar player's. And that's because Gene and Paul became more interested in the "brand" rather than the "band". 70,s Kiss is the only Kiss. Regardless of all the albums released in the 80,s. But they technically should be titled "half Kiss" in the 80,s anyhow! So you have 70,s Kiss and 80,s half Kiss. Two different bands and they should have two different names. But they don't because "The Brand" had to remain in Paul and Genes minds.

Nah, I loved loved loved Kiss when I was young but even then I could smell crap when it was in the room and for me the smell started on Dynasty which is the last Kiss record I find listenable. I continued to buy every one of their records just to see if they got back on track and they never did, except for maybe some songs on Psycho Circus. Most of the no makeup years is just bad idiotic hard rock/metal with awful lyrics and they were so embarrassing to watch .I did attend a couple of no makeup tours and they were cringeworthy. I took a date to one and that was a freaking mistake as she rightfully thought I must be a chump to even waste the money and her time. Bye bye baby! I just don't see how anyone can like the band after 78/79 unless you are 13 years old or blinded by nostalgia.
@PerpetualArt
@PerpetualArt 6 лет назад
shinnox + I am a lifetime fan, but I can't stand the Animalize through Crazy nights period. I think people didn't understand the original version with the makeup. The crap after Lick it Up is the reason why people REALLY didn't understand them. The band that took off their makeup, but replaced it with poser makeup.

I grew up collecting Kiss cards in the late 70s when I was 6-8 so I was a bit too young to listen to them. They were massive - every boy my age was intrigued by the mystique. However, I never got into them musically but always had a soft spot for them. Watching the 2 videos brought back long lost memories. What is apparent is the way they could evolve across the decades: from hard rock to dabbling in dance grooves to hair metal in the 80s to something a little more grungy in the 90s. Even though fans might whinge about the albums from Dynasty onwards they showed they could adapt. That’s why they have had such a long career. I appreciated the videos and have a new appreciation for Kiss. Thanks

Creatures had a number of guitarists, including the lead from Mr. Mister. Recent interviews with the producers and those on the inner circle during this recording have confirmed Vinnie's participation was actually quite minimal here. The real reason Ace was on the cover is because KISS was still trying to get him to stay to save their contract with Polygram which dictated the band have three original members. The alternate cover came many years later when the band was trying to push their makeup free image but felt the album might benefit commercially if the public saw the current lineup.

I always thought it was a bit weird to have other people use their make up. Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent were different. Did they run out of ideas?. Nothing against Eric Singer And Tommy but they were not original band members. So they needed something different but what ever just an opinion.

Thank you for being an honest KISS fan. I've been here for the whole ride. I fell in love with the music first. The look second. My parents forbidding me to have anything KISS, completed the hack. I don't care for any of the bs politics either, but as anyone who's ever been in a band will tell you. "Sometimes, being in a band two weeks, is two weeks too long." And though I'm sad it's coming to an end, I'm reminded of the immortal words of John Lennon. "It's just a band. That's all. f you need to feel nostalgic, you have all those great records to listen to."

Interesting documentary and enjoyable. I disagree with some of what you said (mostly on favorite songs on albums and which ones that you thought were the worst) , but that is cool and it is interesting to hear different opinions. I disagree with a lot of what you said about Paul, but again everyone is entitled to their own opinion. To me , I have gained more respect for him over the years. Not that I agree with everything he says or does, but he was the only member of KISS that really kept the boat afloat since it's inception (by Gene's own admission he wasn't there mentally during some of the 80's). Still a well done documentary done by a true fan.

Well, I agree about the other guys wearing the Catman/Spaceman make-up . I think they should have took the make-up off after the so-called final tour (which I am glad I missed,lol). As much as I don't like Eric and Tommy wearing it, I have to say Ace and especially Peter shouldn't really complain ,because they both either sold or leased the rights for the use of the characters. I know Peter has been very vocal about this , but he wasn't forced to do that. So while I agree with Peter about how he feels with others wearing the make-up, he shouldn't have gave those rights over for some quick cash. in the first place. From my understanding they didn't want to come up with new designs, because the other ones were already established and are much more marketable and truth be told most younger fans probably don't know Eric from Peter or Ace from Tommy. Personally I think that stinks and they should have probably have ended the band after the bogus Farewell tour (or earlier) and went on to do solo stuff or Paul and Gene could have started another band with a smaller ,but loyal, following.

I'm 55 and been a kiss fan since I was 10 and I think that to me it doesn't matter that ace and Peter are not there, don't get me wrong I love them dearly but Eric and Tommy do a phenomenal job on giving the fans what they want. I also believe the reason for it is also because most of the songs that are sang at their concerts today are from the 70s and 80s. So they want to bring those memories as they were back in the days too there fans. Bad or good kiss will always be the number one band in America. 70s Kiss is fine an' all, but 80s Kiss is where it's at for me. It's got metal, glam, AOR, and sleaze. Perfect! And I think Hot In The Shade could be a great album if they took off 5 songs and properly recorded it. Boomerang is great! btw Alive III is totally overdubbed. On the Kissology vol 3 set they included the Revenge tour show where they recorded it and it is pretty obvious. I gotta say though, I love Alive III for the kick ass version of Creatures. I even miss Bruce's slightly extended solo on the studio version.

Destroyer, Creatures, Revenge. Hands-down KISS's best albums in whichever order. Revenge happens to be my favorite. Eric Carr was in Kiss 12 years, something like that. Every album except one went atleast Gold in US. His insurance stopped so he couldnt pay medical bills anymore and died? I know Gene and Paul didnt give him fair cut but still he must have had millions. Atleast few millions. I like when rock stars crash their lamborghini and people will say you dont understand: He crashed his car, insurance didnt cover it. He couldnt get to the studio from his 7000ft, 3 storey, Bel Air mansion and couldnt make next record. So he just faded away and died dirt poor.

I talked to a guy that worked for the studio when Kiss did Psycho Circus, and we know Ace and Peter were offender $800,000 each to not play on the album, but G&P didn't want them to get any kind of royalties and the guy I spoke to said he heard Paul say Ace and Peter weren't talented enough to be on the album.

@@Betrayerslayer its not true paul may have said something like ace is mad at us and dont remember alot of things bad that happened because he was drunk alot so he might bash the band so you may want to avoid him,but i doubt he would put a end to there friendship,eric carr was pretty strongwilled no way he would of went for it. They didnt want erics mind to be warped and a disgruntled ex employee introducing a poison pill. Theres a famous story of paul going up to aces house and spending a entire day with ace trying to convince Ace to stay in kiss that ace dont recall,thats a example of how bad it got with ace and peter they OD on fame,peter admits it now,ace is still indenial. Ace dont even remember he voted to kick peter out of the band.

Despite not agreeing on some of the points.I love this retrospective. So much so, that I feel compelled to say the following. I've been a huge KISS fan since the mid 2000s. I saw kiss on the 40th anniversary tour in Tampa In 2014. I saw them last year in Jacksonville ,On the End of the road tour. I like Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer as musician and as the Spaceman and the Cat. However, that doesn't mean I'm oblivious and numb to the fact that Tommy and Eric aren't the original members. I do sympathize with Fans that don't like Tommy and Eric wearing the make up that was originally worn by Ace and Peter. I get why people call Tommy and Eric "Fake ace and fake peter" even though personally I'm getting sick of people calling them that. And I'm not defending "Scab kiss", Nor am I saying the original line up was the only legit lineup of KISS. That's another thing I'm getting sick of hearing from fans on the Internet. I love seeing video of Ace and Peter in the 70s at their best. But even I can agree Ace and Peter along with Gene and Paul Can be real butt holes and egomaniacs behind the scenes. Money, (and drugs in the 1970s in the case of Peter and ace,) can do that to people. And that's exactly what happened. Gene as the demon and Paul as the Star Child, But I don't like their massive Egos And prima donna attitudes off stage and in the media.Yes I do agree that Gene and Paul are a bunch of hypocrites. And that goes for Peter and Ace too. That being said, sometimes I wish I could go back to the 70s and relive that experience myself. Thank God we have video that we can watch over and over again, When KISS were everywhere in popular culture. Eric Carr is my favorite drummer. He wasn't just another drummer for Kiss, (like Michael Branvold and the guys at three sides of the coin seem to think. I can't stand them.) Eric Carr was a powerhouse and the kick in the ass the band needed to survive the 80s in my opinion. Eric Singer is a great drummer too. He was a great replacement for when Eric Carr passed away and is great for the band now. I wish I could go back to those 1980's KISS days too. However, I wasn't born in the 70s and 80s. I was born in the 1990s. Yes, I'm a millennial, the generation everybody loves to pick on, and shame on the internet and in the media. I understand why people call the current line up "Scab KISS" and why hate "Scab KISS" and know the reasons behind it. Yes, I do not agree with the backstage politics that went into forming the current lineup. "The First "Farewell Tour" in 2000-2001 was horrible. You can have your personal favorite era and that doesn't mean all KISS fans have to agree. That being said, I am sick and tired of people saying "KISS hasn't been kiss since (Insert year here)." As if it were a definitive fact. Saying that KISS have been on a "Farewell tour" since 2000, or even 1996, by some fans is horseshit. Furthermore, saying that KISS hasn't been KISS since 1983 when they took the makeup off, or since 1979, because of the (gasp) Disco album is also horseshit. In my case, I was 4 years old during the reunion, and 9 years old during the First "Farewell Tour." If it wasn't for the current lineup, Parents who grew up with KISS in the 70s, 80s, and 90s wouldn't have been able to take their kids to see that rock'n roll spectacle that KISS in all it's incarnation's are known for. We would have had Kiss Kruises where KISS Finally play some rare songs live, I mean how cool was it to see them play, "The Oath" and I" from the "Music from the elder" album for the first time since KISS did that Fridays show in 1982, or songs they have never played live on tour before like, "Anything for my baby", "Almost Human", or "Sweet Pain" or even, "Wouldn't you like to know me." Tommy and Eric can be thanked for that. The fact that they haven't changed since 1996 may be a turn off to a lot of people. And that's not wrong either. The makeup, along with the music is iconic for a reason. They didn't just have good music, they gave us the kind of shows that no other act in the early part of the 1970's was doing. Kiss's shows over the past forty-five years were and still are the kind of shows that set that are now considered to be the gold standard of live concerts of all types today. Yes, Paul's voice isn't what it used to be and his voice is far from decent. However, All these years later, regardless of who is in the the lineup. Kiss still knows how to put on a show. It's all about the music and the experience. So what I'm saying is we should all stop calling people who like a certain era of KISS that isn't the original, "Not real KISS fans" We should also all stop calling people who don't like the current lineup of KiSS as it stands "Fake Fans ." All of the the name-calling and bashing of any member of KISS past or present needs to stop. We're all KISS fans in the end. And that should be the only thing that matters.

I fell off the KISS bandwagon a long time ago. I got confused after the Psyco Circus LP. Tommy and Eric are good at what they do, but it's not the same. Tommy isn't Ace and Eric isn't Peter. They should have their own make up design like Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent did. Plus it's all this bashing with Paul's book and all the different stories. I wonder who can tell us the truth of what really went on. Too many different stories. I love the band and what they did 1973-1992. The non makeup years aren't so bad either. Some of the songs are good and Crazy Nights isn't a bad album. I got some good memories with a few of those songs. Monster and Sonic Boom ? I don't know. I tried to listen to them, but I can't feel them. They should have resurrected a few of the 70's demos like Smoke to do.

great video, but I kind of understand you say the 2nd cover of CREATURES, the one with no make was done "a few years later, with them still with make up"?. That´s incorrect, it was done around `88, 5 years into the non-make up era. Also, yes, Vinnie extended his guitar solo once, pissing of Paul... but he extended the solo a few minutes...not half an hour like you say!

I have one small issue with the term, "AOR." No. They were trying to be Poison (and where are they now?). I'm one of the few people who believe that The Elder, in the hands of a true prog band like Dream Theater, could have been fantastic. I still like it. But, why copy the bands who copied you? That was the mistake they made in that era. No, KISS havs never really done a bad album, but they could have done better.

Here's a solid concert set list with Gene Simmons as lead vocalist. Paul can share vocal duties on some of the classic songs and Eric Singer can chime in along the way: Deuce Cold Gin She Watchin You Calling Dr. Love Parasite War Machine Lighting Strikes (Thayer) Strange Ways (Singer) Nothin to Lose (w/ Singer) Let Me Go, Rock 'N Roll Hard Luck Woman (Singer) God of Thunder Christine Sixteen I Love it Loud Sweet Pain Shout it Out Loud (Paul Stanley / Gene Simmons) Rock and Roll All Nite (Paul Stanley / Gene Simmons) Dirty Livin' (Eric Singer)...heck, why not! Black Diamond (Paul Stanley / Eric Singer)

80s KISS is better than 70s KISS as far as overall quality is concerned. I don't give a poooooo how many purists get pissy about that opinion. I love 70s KISS (even mostly hated or ignored albums like Dynasty and Unmasked), but 80s KISS leaned into the sound of 80s metal with skill and precision. They're louder, heavier, and ramped up their riff and hook game 100 fold. The only non-make-up album I flat out dislike are Hot in the Shade and Carnival of Souls. Everything else is worth a spin.

Also...a large part of why Ace was on the album cover for Creatures was they were contractually bound at that point to have at least 3 original members. Much like one of their later tours where Peter came back...contract stipulations said...at least 3 original members or they were in breach of contract. There is an interview discussing this somewhere on RU-vid

The problem with Psycho Circus was that Paul and Gene were in complete charge now and they didn't want any input from Ace and Peter. I think they should have tried better to work as a team.

One thing to argue for "Scab" Kiss is that they are trying (been doing it for years so nothing has changed) to show that it doesn't matter who is wearing that make up, it will still be Kiss up on that show and even as of late still sound the same and will always continue to be Kiss even a time that will come when Paul and Gene aren't up there anymore and it's coming within the next 10 years. It's easier for some of us to realize this because we're not still trying to ride the Ace and Peter dicks anymore we're just too tall for that ride. I mean the first cassette tape I listened to was "Smashes, Thrashes, and Hit" that started it all for me and I still love that album and songs, one which I think is the best version of "Beth" ever recorded and that's Eric Carr's version which there's a lot loaded to that song within the band but whatever it's still the best version. I will agree that It would be nice if Singer and Thayer would get their own original make up designs and maybe show that the band still had some creativity left but the make up is iconic and makes it still vintage Kiss right out of 1973.
@DownFallNetWork
@DownFallNetWork 6 лет назад
I never said it wasn't Kiss. O feel that every era of Kiss is still Kiss. Also there is no way they will continue without Gene and Paul. Sales dipped when Ace and Peter left/were fired both times. You really think anyone will go see a tribute band that is pretending to be Kiss? Once you have 0 classic members, it is no longer that band plain and simple.
