There are a whole bunch of things you need to purchase after ordering the catamaran kit, and we go over every one of them. This is everything you need to know about purchasing a DIY catamaran and building your dream sailboat. We even go over the cost of the entire boat, to a ready to circumnavigate the planet condition. Very impressive amount of brain power on display. Presented in an entertaining yet informative way. Thank you for introducing us to your sponsors/suppliers, some of which I have never heard of. That hybrid spinnaker is something I have never seen before, very interesting.

Thanks, Sean! Yes, we were very excited about the New Generation Parasailor from Istec. Their previous version was nice, but not quite what we wanted as it needed a minimum of 6 knots of breeze to fly. This one is cut differently which allows it to fly in lighter winds. Being that we are a performance boat, we want to sail in very light winds rather than motor, which costs us electricity or diesel. We hope to sail at wind speed (or close to it) in those lower numbers, like five knots of speed in five knots of wind. We hope that this sail will help us achieve that goal. I can't wait to get to sea trials and find out what S/V Lynx can do!

I agree with your panel choice. I would never get flex able panels as I see so many are causing fires. Also love your hybrid engine setup. you did your research and it is showing.

Thanks!!! And, we hope you are right. We just have enough funds to finish the boat, so that's not in question, but sailing around the world costs more than the boat in the end! For that, we will have to find some monitary help, RU-vid is one such possible revenue, but only time will tell if that will work. We will just keep making the videos and hope for that best. Very well done video, all the explanations and the thought that has gone into it are fantastic. What about a labour component ? You probably need to allow for a fairly large labour component if you want to finish the boat inside a reasonable time frame.

LOVE the content!! Soooo informative. A massive amount of work goes into each of your videos and I certainly appreciate it! Do you have any idea what it would cost to have your exact boat built by a yard, instead of you doing it yourself?

Thanks for the compliments! You're right, a lot of work goes into making these videos, but its work we enjoy. They will get a bit easier once we start building the cat since we get all the visuals realtime. But... until we start the construction, we will continue to give out as much information on our journey to buying, and all the processes along the way, up to the start of the build. In our next video, we go over some of the cost to have it built at a yard, but I won't make you wait, we got a quote from Thailand in July 2022 to build a 1490 (which is very similar to the 1520 in build time) and they quoted us $760,000. But, you should watch the next video because there is more to it than just that number. The video will release this Saturday. Thanks for watching!

@@SailingSVLynx Thanks for looking at my Channel! I am still in the phase of convincing Sylvia that this would be a good project so my target is a little more to the cruiser side than yours. My top contenders so far are the Outremer 52, Balance 482, Neel 52, and Portofino Marine 47. We still have a ways to go. Thanks again for watching. I would love to see an episode about your Euro Canal and Great Loop planning. Both interest me greatly!!!

@@navalgazingatcampdavid I don't know, we are pretty much lean toward the cruiser side as well, I just want a fast cruiser. That's why we helped design the 1520, we wanted to take this new model further toward the cruiser side than strictly performance. We plan to live aboard and cruise the world for many years to come. And at least two of the boats you listed, the Outemere and the Balance, are performance cats, with the Outremere being more about speed and less about comforts than my 1520. The Balance would be my favorite on your list for a good cruising boat that is still fast. I like the Balance boats, but just could not afford one. You can have a 1520 built for you for half the price., mine will be a third of the price. Still, those are great boats. My favorite boat (other than mine, lol) is the HH55, but oh, the price!

Very detailed stuff! Just curious, what weight fiberglass is used on either side of the PVC foam panels? Will you be adding more for strength below the waterline?

Hey Andrew, thanks for commenting. I don't know the weight and weave yet. As for below the waterline, yes, there are three more layers of fiberglass we put on, but in our case, we changed to basalt fiber as we will end up with a slightly stronger skin and slightly lighter. They will be lighter due to the weight of the weaves of basalt we choose becuase they will require slightly less epoxy to wet them out. We could have gone much stronger but heavier, but choose to go lighter yet still somewhat stonger, with more impact resistance. We are trying to keep the boat light since we have a lot of crew and their gear, but we also wanted to increase the strength of the hulls for beaching the boat on occasion. It cost us a bit of cash to make that upgrade, but we think it is worth it.

Sailing Nandji have had nothing but problems with the tabscrew failing on the Bruntons Autoprop, with the tab breaking off and blades working loose and wearing. Another couple I can't remember the name of had the same failure, had a "professional" rebuild and fail again. If you still go the Autoprop, I'd Locktite and bend multiple tabs if possible, and never re-use.

We will certainly look into that! However, every prop we have looked at has had some issues with these kinds of problems. We were interested in Flexofold props at one point due to some good test results, but Out Chasing Stars lost two of these props, they just fell off, even after they made damn sure that they followed the exact installation proceedures after losing the first one, even video documenting the installation. They lost another one anyway. I have read similar incidents for most other props. But, your point is well taken that we need to make sure the blades are well secured, but we still plan to go with the Eco*Star props from Bruntons, as they are the best for our particular hybrid setup.

Well, none. :) We are building the entire boat ourselves, and we work for pennies, well, less than pennies, we work for comments on RU-vid. So, thanks for this one! But, if someone was wanting to hire someone to build this boat, they should budget about $250,000 to $300,000 in labor costs (if it is built in a place like Thailand).

I don't really have that specific number... but from other folks who sail around the world, we figure we will need about $5,000 a month, on average, to cover all expenses. That includes long term maintenance, like sail and rigging replacements, and all other things like food, fees, stuff that breaks (all the time), etc.

Very interesting thoughts. I am a little sceptical about removing/moving the hatches though. You really want the breeze from the front. I am not sure this would allow for enough ventilation for my taste.

We didn't actually remove the forward cabin hatch, that's still there to get air. We only moved the head and shower hatches, replacing them with portlights. Those heads and shower are small areas. Both cabins still have large top opening hatches and, to help the stern have more ventilation, besides that top hatch we added three portlights. Hopefully that will get plenty of breeze flowing through.

@@SailingSVLynx I bet the small areas are fine like that. But IIUC you plan on moving the rear cabin hatch further in, behind the protection of the deck. That would be my main/only concern. But I hope it's good enough for you guys. Exciting project! :)

I wanted to go with an in-boom furler, initially. However, we have decided to save the money and go simple, and lighter. However, I haven't ruled it out for some time in the future. There are advantages and disadvantages. For now, we are building to a budget, and an inboom furler was beyond our current funds.

Love the design and looking forward to seeing how the hybrid propulsion goes together. One question - do you plan on putting the stanchions outboard or inboard of the dagger boards and if they are outboard do you have to increase their height?

The stanchions are inboard of the daggerboards. The daggerboards are set at an angle, far outboard, so the casings take up the least amount of space inside the hulls. Thanks for watching. Therefore, we postponed that video a couple of weeks, but we have a different video coming out tomorrow.

Hi, two things I want to mention, 1/ the cost doesn't include your time/effort required to put the cat together. I cannot remember if you mentioned the hours required to build the Cat? still that is a very reasonable price for a large cat .. a production cat of the same length would be between double to triple that price and of course the waiting time for it to be delivered usually 2 to 3 years. 2/ I saw a cat for sale that had cork as a top deck covering .. it looked really great, had non-slip features including a soft underfoot feel and didn't heat up for that "hot foot shuffle" . Have you considered this as a non-slip idea? Not sure of the cost though so that may be a consideration. Good luck with the build. Love the informative video.

Yes, we talked about the time to build in a previous video, but Schionning estimated 6,000 man hours, but we figure 10,000 for us. We did look into cork, but for cost and weight reasons, we are going with a textured non-skid surface. Thanks for your comments and suggestions, we appreciate you taking the time.

I have no real idea. 800K? 900k? But less after we sail it for many years. That isn't important to me because I don't intend to sell the boat. I'll pass it on to my family some day.

I have local representation in South Africa since Schionning is there working directly with Ullman Sails. The sails will be in my shipping container with the kit. I know that the Wynns had an issue, but I also know many other people who speak highly of Ullman. I am not concerned.

Actually, now that I thought about it, the Wynns had trouble with One Sails, not Ullman Sails. So I went and checked their video. Sure enough, it was not Ullman Sails. In fact, it was Ullman sails who stepped in and helped the Wynns!

Unfortunately, I'm not a Naval Architect. What I do is general design and 3D concept modeling. That then needs to be worked on by engineers and naval architects to create the actual plans for a seaworthy vessel. In my case, I used Schionning for that portion of the design.

I'm not sure if you think it is too little, or too much. I'll assume you think we are underestimating the cost to build the 1520. However, I assure you, we are not. Let's look at this logically. We purchased the boat as a full kit that includes everything to build the shell, that is a known cost and already paid. Space rent for building is also already paid up. Structures and upgrades to the location, purchased and done. Tools to build, all purchased. Fees, shipping costs, taxes, duties, on imports etc., paid. Then, there are all the systems you must add to a boat, but we already bought all of those, things like all the sails, mast, boom, standing rigging, running rigging, furlers, stanchions, cleats, steering mechanisms, ship’s wheel, refrigerators, engines, hybrid systems, batteries, hatches, windows, doors, winches, propellers, anchors, chain, windlass, and much more. We ordered all these systems early to avoid supply chain issues which could hold up the speed of our build. So, with 95% of the boat and systems already purchased, we don’t have to rely on estimates and guesses, we have hard numbers. And, at this point, we are far under budget, not over. :) The only unknown would be labor costs, and since we are building it ourselves, that cost is zero. So, where do you think we will go over that budget? Just curious.
