Kit-Siderations: Ammo Load Outs

Myself as a team medic, my medics, and my SARC Corpsmen all just carried a slimmed down med bag, and each member of the patrol carried a beefed up IFAK. Doing so enabled the team med bag to be slimmer, and the SOP was to have your "go bag" out and on top of the ruck in the hide for breakout drill purposes. And as the "go bag" has the majority of mission essential items, its always right where you need it for access.

It starts with our neighborhoods and our friends' neighborhoods. Use the commonalities to tie in together, and reaching out to local law enforcement about setting up a volunteer group to assist with certain emergencies would likely go well with many departments so long as you're not offering tactical support.

The considerations are less about the *tactics* involved and more about Rules Of Engagement. For military application, hostile act/ hostile intent is often enough to apply deadly force. For Law Enforcement, and by extension civilians, you must be able to articulate an immediate threat to your life or someone in the immediate vicinity. Police have a couple other exceptions when it comes to public safety however, in either case you will find yourself at the end of an inquiry of some kind.

I'm still not sure what causes that, and it doesn't affect people consistently. Could be my audio or it could be IG.

OpFor may not be "thugs in beaters, post hurricane." It may be groups of thugs raiding ranches or farms (examples in South Africa and Venezuela). Or Cartel. So some contexts may require more mags. But your fundemental point applies: build out your logistics system.

The dump pouch is often misused to carry extraneous items which don't belong on the fighting load. And that's why we have the Assault Load, the level of kit in which to carry mission essential items that don't need to be on the fighting load and provide a small amount of sustainment.

@@Blakewater0326 Yes I am aware, I had just listened to your tirade on dump pouches and their common misuse. Which I have seen but dont to participate in, as I have a large pouch, that is designed and designated for carrying miscellaneous stuff, a buttpack. It also allows room for a small bit of sustainment items (like one mre) so I don't have to be married to the assault pack.

@@presidentmerkinmuffley6769 what if I told you that your butt pack is, at least in part, your assault load?

Even in hours long fights, we found that when you shoot to shoot accurately you don't end up blowing through your ammo. Its the guys that think "suppressive fire!" and burn down mags in the direction of the enemy that end up going through their load out in a single fight and start carrying 16 mags as an infantryman. The problem wasn't enough ammo, it wasn't enough training.

@@Blakewater0326 4 tours with 3rd SFG(a)... pleny of training, plentof ammo, plenty of accurate shooting. High magazine kit setups were common years back during jungle/dismounted/no resupply missions in high threat areas of operation. Kits evolved down to 6-8 mags for mobility and to reduce heat casualties as we transitioned to desert warfare. We learned to augment our kits/rucks with trucks, heavy weapons and emergency go-bags. Still never saw a three mag setup until i saw police running light versions of the military kit. I agree that training is key when considering how many mags a kit needs.

@@philliplopez1501 excellent points about larger load outs when external support goes down. That's the idea, and so many people think that the GWOT they saw on social media is "the way".

Not sure if I'm fully understanding your question, and as I filmed this video quite a while ago I'm not remembering exactly what I said. However, if we're talking about my chest rig and why I have all my mags on there I do believe that I express I chose to carry my mags on my fighting load and free up space in the ruck. It saves me time and effort having it all on the fighting load rather than distributed. Is it THE way of going about it, no not really. Many guys chose to put 4-6 mags in their ruck, though many did so sloppily, and under the guise of just wanting an easier chest rig to wear. I appreciated the weight distribution as well. 12 pounds of mags, 4-9 pounds of grenades (based on whether or not I was carrying 40mm), 5 pounds of water, 2 pounds of radio; roughly 30 pounds of fighting load on the high end. With an 80-100 pound ruck on my back, those 30 pounds feels quite nice. And when I would drop the ruck for leaders recon or actions in a hide site, I hardly noticed the weight of my fighting load. There is always more than one way to skin the cat.

Primarily former military and some still active. I have the fortune of still living outside of base, as do many others once they retire from the service. And thanks to my travels training people that network grows in number and geographic area.

1. Approach it from the stance of general readiness, such as fire extinguishers and alarm systems. Build that into natural disaster supplies, and so on. Not everyone will be willing to go to the same lengths as you, and that's ok. Do what you can, with whom you can. 2. Find cooler friends by attending classes and networking.

I didn't pull out the gun belts, though I did mention that plate carriers go with gun belts to complete the load out. If I'm wearing the chest rig going into the bush for reconnaissance & surveillance work I wouldn't carry a pistol. It isn't needed, and only serves to create more complicated equipment problem and more items to secure and be accountable for. There's context into the why of carrying a pistol in conjunction with a rifle or carbine, media and video games has folks believing it's simply standard when it is not.

@@Blakewater0326 Yeah i think i've fallen victim to marketing to an extent. Appreciate the response, it was kinda what i was fearing. That i essentially have a secondary platform i've built around - that i dont really need. im not kicking in any doors lol. mandatory camping seems more likely.

@@forestnfren8146 camping and recreational stuff I'll carry a pistol rather than a rifle or carbine. This way I have it should I need it, though it's concealed and out of my hands so I can just enjoy the trip.

Lots of subject matter experts out there for that. I can do some videos on how at least I choose to train though, that may give folks a starting point.
