Kitchen Aid Refrigerator not cooling - how to fix your broken fridge or get a great deal 

How'd it go? Ours is a POS, big ol boat anchor. We researched RU-vid and a technician with 30 years experienced said to get either Frigidaire or GE. So we got a GE from Costco. Never buying KitchenAid again.

@@LetsBHonest was an easy fix. I spent about $50 on the part on eBay. It’s been working perfect since. It’s horrible how companies are able to get away with stuff like this

Really?? They should be paying for repairs because this is clearly a defect, I'm just always surprised when companies admit they made a faulty product. Did he say it was a recall? What parts did the tech replace? Thanks

@@anythingmechanical3399 It was 2 parts , the 1 that you replaced & also a new motherboard I believe he called it to tell it to do a longer defrost cycle. He said when KitchenAid designed a refrigerator they did not think it needed a heating element for the refrigerator section the freezer section has it but the refrigerator doesn’t now the newer models that you go out to buy now has a heating element for a refrigerator section. he did not use a word recall but pretty much he said that they are aware of the problem that’s why they’re fixing it so best thing for anyone to do is get a hold of a certified KitchenAid repair company that knows of the problem & KitchenAid will pay for it, my tech came in my house & said I don’t even need to look he already new what needed to be done, he said he has fixed about 60 of them…. & out of that only 2 didn’t fix the problem… but so far mine is doing great!!! Just in time for the Holidays!! Thanks again

@@mikegenna255 Your unit must be under the 2 year warranty? When I called KitchenAid, they said they do not pay for anything, no labor, no parts. The only thing the 800 number will do is to give you a referral for a local service contractor. $175 for the trip, additional price when you want to fix the issue. It could be $500-$1000 after you are done with the fix. Pretty much no help from KitchenAid.

@@mikegenna255I’d love any additional info you can give on this. I’ve replace the Evap Fan cover back in September. It worked fine until April (warmed up once), now it’s doing it again but warming up once every day or two before it cools back down. I hate this thing.

Mine does the same- and i bought updated ice maker- what date and part number is ur icemaker? Didn’t fix my problem bc my fridge doesn’t seem to know when to stop cooling…

Remove drawers first; remove those doors first. Before hand, you have to check how to remove doors, otherwise, you may not install the doors back when you finish the repair. Second, unscrew two big recessed location bolts at the both sides of the drawer racks. Silly design.

There are. Some round one inch diameter,plastic,knobs you spin:off….on the sides- 2 I think

Bottom of the fridge cabinet. Open the fridge doors, remove the lower drawers and look towards the back wall of the fridge

The ice doesn't necessarily break the fan, although it can if left for long enough. I mentioned in the video that several things could cause the icing condition (bad thermistor, bad seal, bad fan), most of which were replaced with the new part.

On the sides there are two plastic circles that u turn anticlockwise. Round things with a ridge in the middle

Thanks so much! I purchased and parts fit but the wiring harness doesnt match the control board. Maybe I need to swap or upgrade the whole board? I think @j Yero is noticing the same on their end.

@@wadeboykin9679 if you call the website and give them your fridge model they will give you the exact one. This happened to me. I ordered the piece on this page and I actually needed a different piece. The only difference in the piece is the one less harness connector.

I can't believe these techs are recommending defrost alone. Like I say in the video, that's not treating the problem. It's a pretty straight-forward replacement. One recommendation is to remove the right door so you can get the lower shelving out and have more room to work.

If I bought this fridge new, I would be trying to get my money back. If it's icing up like mine, that could stop the fan and/or stop airflow through the vents. You can check by looking for signs of ice at the bottom of the fridge cabinet. Alternatively, if you unplug it for several days, then plug it back in and everything works this will confirm that it's icing over. This test is probably impractical for you, and only points to the problem, it won't fix it for long. The fix is what I show in the video.

Do you unplug it to check for the ice?

@@jyero7634 if you unplug it for a few days, any ice should melt. If you then plug it back in and your issues all improved or disappeared, then you know it was an ice problem.

Does the thermistor connect to anything?

@@jyero7634 it comes attached to the new assembly by a wire. It clips on to the evaporator outlet tube

Yes, but only one. I would recommend removing the right door (the one without the water dispenser). If I remember correctly, there's a plastic cover above the top hinge that needs to be removed, then a few bolts before the door can simply be lifted off the lower hinge.

Yes, it's confusing. A thermistor is a thermostat + resistor (hence the name). So the resistance changes with temperature. This basically means that a thermistor tends to be an input device for a computer.
