Simple Living
Decluttering is part of simple living for me. Living with less stuff makes life simpler in our house. However, simple living does not mean easy living. Simple living is about uncomplicating parts of your life. By decluttering, choosing your enough, and focusing intentionally on what matters most to you, a life of slow and simple living is possible.
Slow Living
A slow living lifestyle is sometimes perceived as an antidote to the effects of that fast paced life. Slow living is about balancing the things you want to do WITH the speed of life. Slowing down and embracing slow living is not about getting the same amount of things done at a slower pace. Rather, slow and simple living is about finding balance and living better in our fast paced world.

A suggestion for your mother’s beautiful punch bowl-I have an antique punch bowl which I have used as a centerpiece during the Christmas season and filled It with gold and silver plastic ornaments and a little tinsel. It might be a wonderful way to remember your mom at Christmas time. You could also fill It with seasonal ornaments - Easter eggs, lemons, and oranges in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, etc.

I totally agree. We have a bunch of sentimental Christmas items from older folks and the kids and alone they look so out of place as they are all so different. Last week I decided to get a three-tiered tray and fill it up with all these knickknacks, cookie cutters included, added some greenery and it Looks stunning - suddenly I love those pieces. The beautiful Bowl: greenery, old cookie cutters and Something sparkling and it makes a lovely meaningful centerpiece❤

I think you should make a tradition, each Christmas wear your MIL’s apron while you make your ornament cookies with the special cookie cutters, and mix them or display them in your mother’s bowl.😊

Erica, please use that apron. I’m from Sweden and have 2 old aprons from my dad’s paternal grandma Ruth who died in the nineties and I think she would be happy to see me and my kids make use of what she used and perhaps made herself.

@@EricaLucasLovesWhen you said ornaments at first I thought you meant to do this too! Although making salt dough ornaments would be cute as well. You could do both. Let the kids have a small tree and make ornaments with grandmas cookie cutters for it, the put christmas ribbons between the little handle and hang them on the big family tree. If you don't use glue on them you can use them both ways over and over, as the kids get older. They can remake salt dough ornaments. Or just make them and put both on the family tree if a smaller tree is to much to manage.

Cas from ‘Clutterbug’ put Command hooks inside her cabinet doors to hang measuring cups, spoons, etc. You could also put Command hooks inside a cabinet door near your stove for your hot pads. Some of those expandable drawer dividers from Amazon or Walmart would help to keep your cooking utensil drawer organized. 💝

The large bowl might look nice under a potted plant if you have the right spot for it. You can still wash it and use it for an occasion if needed. It's so nice to see you sharing the process of diving back in from where you are rather than getting discouraged. I've been watching your videos for a while and the impression I have is that you still have an awful lot of stuff. You seemed more motivated and more focussed when you were using the term 'minimal-ish'. I say that as an outsider peeking in on a small piece of your life, respectfully. Perhaps you might consider a couple of quarantine bins in a dedicated spot. Put the date on each item and check the bins regularly. This might help you to let go of some things that you think you need, but your emotional attachments may be getting in your way. It's a very common blind spot for most of us recovering 'hoarder-ish' people. I heard a quote recently that is so simple, but really struck me, "if your house is a mess, you have too much stuff". It may seem obvious to most people, but to those of us who have lived with issues involving clutter, it's something that we may need to be reminded of every so often. Thank you so much for your inspiration.

I use measuring spoons and cups way more often than chopsticks, so I might move those to back behind the silverware. Also, the nonslip material you have under your kitchen towels would be helpful in your other kitchen drawers to keep things from sliding around (the larger utensils and the silverware tray). Love it when small changes make a positive difference. The stand you bought is really pretty! If you use it for something small, like your gnome figures in your window, you'd still be able to enjoy its beauty.

On the top shelf where lunch boxes go, try using a basket/bin (without lid) big enough for bags and thermoses. You can use it as a drawer to pull out. It makes things easy to gwlet in and out without knocking over.

Love that marble plant stand!!:) if it’s not intended for outdoor use maybe u can put an indoor plant or candle or photo on it inside? My Girl Scouts (k-4th) just made salt dough ornaments. The Juniors made the salt dough and designed the front with found nature objects for Step 2 of the Outdoor Art Explorer badge. The Brownies and Daisies just made the ornaments for fun. They are sitting on my kitchen counter, waiting for our next meeting for them to be painted. They had to bake for 2 hours, so I brought them home to bake. I love your mother's bowl and agree with the suggestion of using it as a centerpiece on the kitchen table, not the dining room table. When my husband moved to KZ for work, I completely reorganized and decluttered the kitchen, including removing an upper cabinet and its contents. When he is home for the month of June, he usually asks, but this last June, I did the majority of the cooking, which I found odd as for the first 30 years of marriage, he did the majority of the cooking. I have a utensil drawer like yours but it is more cluttered. I refuse to clean it up until I figure out a storage system because I don't like the one that worked for over 30 years. 🤷‍♀️

If I had a glass instant pot lid, I’d use it especially when we serve soup for a crowd. The pressure lid is cumbersome to have sitting around when the food is already cooked. I have the same type of antique cookie cutters. I tied on bakers string and we hang them on our tree at Christmas.

the glass lid is to use your IP as a slow cooker. I use mine all the time...or if I am browning meat so grease doesnt splash. I even use it when I make a pot of soup in there and it is simmering. I cant imagine NOT having one. There is no reason you cant use the cookie cutters for food. They are aluminum, so if you have no problem using foil, this is no different. I have my grams...exact as yours and we use every single Christmas. They are so much better than the plastic ones.

I often use things I bought and realized I have never used (if it's pretty close to holiday time) for this purpose. There are always gift exchanges for church groups etc and lots of people would love something like that! I'm fortunate enough that I have a few drawers in my kitchen and I can separate my every day utensils (measuring spoons, scraper, peeler, meat thermometer etc) in one drawer and my not used often but need in another (potato masher, ice cream scoop, baster etc). I know I use these almost every time I cook so they are in one drawer, items not used all the time in another. I do keep some on my counter in a container that I reach for all the time and would rather not have in a drawer such as stirring spoons, ladles, wooden spoons, rubber scrapers, spatula. I know a lot of folks enjoy nothing on their counters but it didn't work for me. I don't have many since decluttering, I mean really I don't need 7 rubber scrapers on hand lol. One or two will do. Getting rid of gadgets was another helpful thing for me. All these do dads and thingamabobs that really didn't make my life any easier. If my mom and grandmother could cook without gadgets so can I :)

Would a lazy suzy for the utensils be better???

It was just wide enough to fit and long enough to sew a tunnel and insert the curtain rod. I suggest putting anything you don’t use regularly in the large pantry, especially small appliances & stick with what you use daily/weekly. We did that a few years ago & it was a game changer!

I use my glass lid to reheat various things on the 30 min cycle, I also use it to make yogurt.

I’m Swedish, that’s so funny when you described the apron. Does your MIL have any more information? And I suggest you make it into a pillowcase for a throw pillow.

Remake the apron into a table runner or a large placemat for the center of your table. Or, if there's enough fabric, you can repurpose it into cloth napkins

You could make Christmas ornaments from the cookie cutters themselves.

My hubby gets mad when I shuffle things around. But I put it where I would use it or look for it first. And I do tell him it’s been moved but then he forgets. I swear it’s selective hearing. 😂

I have the same problem with my sheet pans. I only have drawers, not a thin, tall cabinet especially for them. So, they live in a drawer. I also have stirring utensils next to my stove, and measuring cups/spoons in another, but that is because my food prep is in the area in which I store measuring items. My stove spoons and spatulas are in divider bins in the drawer, which helps with organizing and keeping them from becoming a jumbled mess. I also store the utensils E-W instead of N-S, with half going one direction and half another, so I can maximize my allotted spaces.

I use my instant pot glass lid when I'm using the slow cooker setting and making bone broth. I also use my instant pot liner as a soup pot on the stove top occasionally as well, I use the lid in that situation too.

I got rid of my crockpot and just use the instant pot crockpot setting. That's what the glass lid is for.

Question, is there a place to store the measuring cups and spoons by the baking center?

I roll my dish towels and put them in a drawer. They take up a lot less space and you can see each one.

I had a huge collection of plastic packaged cutlery and didn’t know what to do with it. I hate to throw them out and they don’t recycle them in our area. I posted them on our local Facebook Buy Nothing group and got several replies. I guess for people who entertain a lot especially for BBQs they’re very useful. We would have used them years ago but just don’t have the need for them anymore.

My instant pot didn't have a glass lid. I either use my IP lid, vent open for slow cooker, or I happen to have another stock pot with a lid that fits perfectly.

Those little items which are beautiful and also sentimental and carry the love of family - they're a problem. I love the apron and kept thinking it would be nice to have it ornamented somehow - but how on earth can you do that with an apron - hang it on the wall and it just looks like that's whee you peg up your apron rather than an ornament. So, I'm like you, back into the cupboard! The punchbowl is beautiful - I would have issues letting that go, myself. Even without the connection to your mum. Thank you for sharing your journey, I know you mentioned that you weren't feeling great in your last video, and honestly, I just hope you get a little bit of joy from these videos and feel a little of the appreciation and respect your viewers out here feel for you.

IMO, those plastic spoons should sit in the cabinet that you found them in. Maybe use the black storage holder to keep them in. Someone was using them and liked that spot. I kept moving stuff until I got some storage holders like your black ones. Everything then had a home.

I have my cookie sheets in the skinny drawer below the oven. Muffin and other baking trays in a drawer. I had to switch up pots when I got a new stove. The drawer in the stove was so tiny pots no longer fit.
