In this third and final part of our series, I'll conclude our kitchen painting project using Farrow and Ball paints. Throughout the process, I encountered some questions regarding opacity and the mixing of the paint, which shed light on why many professional painters hesitate to use F&B. Opacity can vary depending on the colour and application, requiring additional coats for full coverage in some cases.
Additionally, the unique mixing process of Farrow and Ball paints may differ from what some painters are accustomed to, leading to uncertainty and reluctance. These factors contribute to the tendency among professionals to explore alternative paint brands. However, despite these challenges, the quality and aesthetic appeal of F&B paints shine through.
The rich pigments and durable finish make them a compelling choice for those willing to invest the time and effort to achieve a premium result. While professional painters may have reservations, DIY enthusiasts can still achieve stunning outcomes with Farrow and Ball paints by carefully following instructions and embracing the unique characteristics of the product.

I think your explanation at the summing up could be feasible. Fast moving colours made up in big vats and not so used made up as when needed at the merchants. Finished job looked nice Phil. Well done.

Kitchen looks lovely, like your attention to the detail and if you are not completely happy, it gets another coat. I had a professional decorator round the other day (a new build decorator from mass builder Bellway👀) he asked how I done my paint border lines in my kitchen, I said tape (like you say Phil it can give you flawless finish) the guy just sort of gave me a judgy look. After he had completed his job and left it was me who was judging his work and the bits I was going to have to take back and re-do.

I have always painted kitchens with brushes, but took your advice & used a roller, the paint conditioner, I used Floetrol, it rollered & dried very well, just a very slight orange peel effect, but a good finish & better than a brush. I agree Phil, I used the correct F&B primer, but took three top coats for a flawless coverage. The paint conditioner definitely helped, but I did note on the tin, it said do not use Paint conditioners, possibly for this reason. Glad you’ve brought this matter up , most of my decorator pals don’t like using F&B. Thanks Phil !

Don’t mind farrow and ball at all. Good stuff for walls and ceilings if a little pricey. We prefer a made for purpose kitchen paint for cupboards though. Sayerlack is our go to. Having the crosslinker to add the chemical resistance and extra durability is essential. Let’s you clean cupboards with normal kitchen sprays with no issues. 100% on tape as well. Loving your work Phil 👍🏻

If I’m ever asked by a customer to use F&B (I never suggest it) I make them aware that it may not cover in two coats and if it needs a third they are liable for cost of more paint and the additional labour. I also make them aware that the emulsion is not available in 1 litre cans. Finally i only give them a price for labour and sundries and insist they supply the paint. It concentrates their mind!!

Kitchen looks great Phil well done. I don't mind a bit of FB. The modern eggshell and the primers spray beautifully through both the quickshot and the gxff with no thinning. I like using the new flat stuff but it definitely needs letting up a bit with a splash of water due to it being so thick. Personally these days I give the customer 3 options if they want FB, I'll give them a price with FB, a price with a trade brand and finally a price with Benjamin Moore so then the client can see 2 other brands that fall either side at price point. 9 times out of 10 they still go for the FB! Oh, and on the taping up? Yes, yes and yes again. I only started taping around 2 years ago but the results are just that tad better and for me, if it improves the job then it's a no brainer. 🎉

Fantastic finish as always Phil. F&B is a marketing company plain and simple, it's all about the branding. Most Painters & Decorators if there honest do not like this stuff because no.1 coverage is poor and you have to use there primer. 2. When quoting for work, the extra cost involved in paint and labour terms can make you appear expensive. 3. When you can get colour matches to within 99% with other high quality big brands, it simply makes no sense from an aesthetic nor monetary point of view. That's the view of it in Dublin anyway amongst most p&d's targeting the middle class market, cheers Alan Henley&Co

F&B,s biggest problem for me is the quality doesn’t match the price. I personally don’t think it’s a good paint at all. 3 coats of eggshell is ridiculous at the price point. I use either caparol or Isomat eggshell and they’re both superior to F&B for half the price.

Hi Phil, I’ve got some delicate tape now so if I want crisp lines just wanted to clarify that it’s woodwork first then tape up and paint the walls rather than paint the walls (lapping onto the woodwork, then tape the wall edge and paint the woodwork? If woodwork first do I need to be careful not to lap onto the wall too much as this could prevent the wall paint adhering properly (like if you were trying to paint over gloss) or is that not an issue when using waterbased woodwork paints? Appreciate your advice 👍🏻

Do you think that finish is better than any other paint you have used Phil? If not you should not endorse it as it takes at least three coats if you are lucky to get a decent finish and it’s a way higher price point than other premium quality paints on the market.!

So as I understand it, most people complain about needing three coats of emulsion where other makes only need two and the F&B solution is to use a coat of primer then you only need two coats of emulsion. That seems to me like still needing three coats - or am I missing something?

@Liverpool1ne 3 coats its waste of time. Kitchen can be done only in 2k paints if you want a durable finish. If F&B is bomb proof then 2k is nuclear proof. I'm not a pro by any means, but I've still got 25 years experience. Farrow & Ball simply isn't up to the same standard as other paints, such as Tikurilla. Where they got a foothold in the market is with their palettes. But it's irrelevant these days as most decorating centres will tint paint to match.

@bryanellis2927 Месяц назад
I also like F&B but why is it that they are the only paint company that sell a wall and woodwork primer for their products The majority of other brands do do specify that you need to use there primers It's a way of making more money If you have to buy extra paint to cover in three, then thats a problem on the pricing up If you go in heavy, you might lose the job If the client supplies it, then fantastic I also find that you can't touch in the estate emulsion which can be a nightmare You just have to come to terms with the fact it's not a fast and cheap way of decorating
