I have a 14 year old Kitchenaid Artisan Stand mixer that a customer wanted the speed control lever replaced and while doing that also had the grease replaced
Thank you! Due to this video, I spent $10 to repair my mixer on my own and did not have to rely on anyone! This explanation was terrific and I had no problems following it.
There is a screw to retain the pivot pin. It can be accessed from the under side of the base. If it is not tightened the pin can work out, and the mixer head can also be wobbly.
Fantastic video! I could pause it as I disassembled it as I went. My problem was the speed control lever on the side would not stay off and pull back to speed 2. Once I got it disassembled, I saw that the screw that holds the speed control lever down was VERY loose. I just unscrewed it completely, put a dab of blue Loctite on it, and gave it a good tightening. Everything went right back together, the only snag was lining up the hole for the pin on the bottom, I used a mini screwdriver to align it on one side and aligned the pin on the other side, and tapped it in. Everything slipped right back together. Thanks again!
Nice video! Believe me, I appreciate the effort that goes into making them, it's a job in itself! At 13:39 you are saying the the washer that fits between the speed control lever and the base is deformed. That washer is actually spring loaded to give just the right amount of pressure between the screw and the lever for easy but tight pivoting action. If you look at the screw you should notice it has a shoulder under the head. When the screw is tightened it bottoms out at some point with just the right clearance for the lever and the spring washer.
This was very helpful when I needed to repair my locking lever, thanks for the effort you put into the video and your explanation of the various steps.
Wow! It had a hard fall. I am not sure why but it started working after I disassembled and reassembled as you indicated. I can't explain it but thank you!!!
Incredible video. One observation is that it wasn’t mentioned how the packed grease was cleared from the gear housing. I would possibly use brake cleaner in the can, or another industrial degreaser, but I’m curious how you removed the grease. Many thanks for the in depth disassemble/ re assembly. I think it was most importantly how you conveyed your approach to project. I feel many will benefit from your method of which is keeping a proper demeanor while going into anything like this. Kudos.
First of all, thanks for the excellent, detailed instructions. Some of the best that I've seen. However, I ran into a tight spot. The pin that holds the orbiting part to the shaft (at 5:20-5:30) on my mixer also was very hard to remove. It took many firm blows with a hammer and punch (I used a nail set). The pounding caused the end of the pin to flare out a bit. Now, I'm at reassembling and it's time to replace the pin. I noticed that the orbital part can be worked on to the shaft and the gear meshes but when I align it with the hole in the shaft, either the orbital part is not on far enough or the shaft doesn't reach down far enough. The hole is about 3/4 clear. This is not rotational alignment but vertical, along the shaft. Any suggestions?
This is a great instructional video. I have a similar mixer, but the speed control lever will not stay in the OFF position. It always goes up to about the second position. If you pull it back it goes right back to the second position. Thoughts on what that might be? Could it be just an adjustment is required?
Not sure why it would do that . You could have a loose screw on the lever ?? It’s hard to say with out being hands on. Maybe the speed control plate on the back but that would be a long shot
Awesome video. I’m watching because the agitator shaft (shaft that extends into the bowl and connects to attachments) on my K5SS broke at the tip. After removing the planetary I could not figure out how to separate the shaft from the gear / rest of planetary. Do you have any insight or help? The replacement shaft is sold so I assume it is possible. Thanks for the great videos
That little roll pin that you said comes out with a few taps took me finally drilling the piece out. I tried heat. I tried cold. I tried everything. I finally used a drill and was able to hollow it out. I have no idea why it was so stubborn.
Thank you for the great video. I found a Kitchenaid Stand Mixer that is labelled for Display only, not for resale. It's never been used. It had no cord and a plug where the cord should go. It seems to be all there? Accept the cord, but probably needs to be greased? I put power to it and initially it powered up. But now doesn't seem to want to run? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
I don’t know much about the display only “model” if it came from the manufacturer it may be missing some key components or may have had something wrong like bad gears or commutator. Check for brushes too
Thanks for this, all is very clear. I have a short circuit problem with mine, same model, do you have any suggestions? Brushes are ok and the electric wire seems ok too. I know I have to replace the speed lever as well, my wife dropped the machine sideways on the work table and slightly bent the handle, but I don’t see how to relate this with the short circuit. It starts to work and all the house fuses and circuit breakers go down, I already had some losses with this. Thank you.
I agree, this is a great video tutorial. I have one of my brushes stuck inside (only the spring came out). Do you have a suggestion to remove the brush please?
Any tips on removing the pins from the planetary. My pin has been quite stubborn. I've read that people have used a heat gun, wd-40 and putting the mixer in the freezer. Metal does contract in cold temperatures, so that sounds like the best way to go. Is there only one way to hammer the pin out or does either direction work. Please note I have a kitchenaid classic mixer with square, robertson screws. thank you.
I don’t think the pins are directional but am not 100% on that. I’ve had better luck using heat than with cold. If you have a vise you may be able to press the pin out rather than trying to hammer it. Good luck
This is a fantastic video. Thank you. I recently bought a nice classic plus off craigslist. When I went to tap out the pin that holds the housing (which just stopped working in the middle of a bake) and now freespins. I cannot get the pin to come out.It won't budge and don't want to wail on it. Is there a secret handshake to getting it out? Thank you the taking the time to make such a through vid. Cheers.
You may want to try a little lubricant like wd40, Gibbs, liquid wrench. Spray some on let it sit then give it some hard taps. If that fails you could try heating it up with a torch but be careful with that.
I figured out what was causing the planetary to ride too low. When connecting the planetary the washer needs to be positioned in its slot so the gear on the planetary angles in above it which causes the teeth and gear to stay engaged!
Thanks for the awesome video. I have a question tho. My Artisan won't turn on until gear 6. Nothing happens from 1 to 4, but it starts right at 6. I know how to open it up and I know how to adjust the speed. The screws on the upper half of the control-backplate regulate the lower speeds and the lower screw regulates gear 6 and upwards. But what is the most common problem when all the lower gears don't work at all? Maybe you have an Idea what to look for.
25.01 you said section of gear, what do you call that complete section of gear, here is my issue, turn the big wheel the above small wheel didnt move, I remove the gear and found the small pin was bent and it was not in its place. I put it back but it looks bent is that normal? After putting it in its working.
Great thorough video. I have a Kitchenaid mixer that is 30 years old and when it is mixing or beating it is really loud. Any idea what the problem could be?
I don’t do the repairs anymore but there is a guy on YT called Mr Mixer who may be able to give you an estimate. The things are so heavy that by the time you pay for shipping and labor parts, it may not be worth it to you, good luck
Hi. Thank you so much for the video. I was replacing the speed lever and everything seemed to come together well but when I tested it the mixer would only start when at medium or high speeds and is not working at the stir or low speed. Do you know how I can fix/adjust this?? thanks
Successfully disassembled my KitchenAid Stand Mixer I bought on EBay. Mixer Lock Selector knob broke off during shipping. Decided to change grease while I was at it but encountered problem during reassembly. Trying to get the mixer head back together, for some reason there is a gap that I can't seem to get to properly seat (can provide pictures if needed). Think it's the alignment nibs in front and back not seating for some reason. Any advice?
Unfortunately sometimes these can be a little difficult to get back on. Sometimes you just need to back away from it for a few minutes and then re-try. It can be frustrating but as long as there are no pinched wires or misaligned gaskets it will eventually go back
I too have watched few videos and your the best and step by step. Bravo 👏 I have artisan, place where you attach the attachment is moving freely. There is no tension any more. What part would you think is broken and what location?
I have looked at several videos on the KitchenAid. My problem was stemmed from the fact that I stored it for close to 1 1/2 years. Now that I am in my new place I have speed control issues. I can't get the slow 60 rpm. Do I need to replace the whole speed control in the back or is there a way to adjust it. Mine is a 6 qt lift bowl 375 watts. I would be so thankful for any help or suggestion.
You should be able to make an adjustment by using the screw on the speed control plate. If it doesn’t adjust at all it my be time to replace the speed control plate.
Hello ! Thank you for your nice video to learn how to fix mine - Mine was good and running before I took apart to lubricate ... put that back together , I accidently pinch the power cord and burnt out .. Now I just replaced a new power cord and it won't run at all ... What else it ruining inside ? please help ... Control board ! maybe ?
My speed switch often springs back from the off to the number 1 position reactivating the mixer. This can be dangerous if you have the mixer up or hands nearby. Any thoughts on why this is occurring. I will follow this guide to see if something is loose inside. The speed switch feels a little wobbly up and down so may not be biting on the lugs. Superb video though.👍
There’s a spring that connects the lever to the speed control plate and that may be pinched or something on the inside. It’s hard to say without looking at them, but it sounds like you’re getting too much spring pressure and it’s wanting to pull the lever forward anyways, I hope thevideo will help you good luck
Got the lever replaced okay, but when I put the planetary back on and aligned the teeth and inserted the pin but the planetary seems to ride a little too low and disengages at the teeth. Did I miss something?
I had a similar problem with the speed control arm slipping back and not switching off. I discovered it was the flat spring that goes under the lever was missing and when I applied tension to the lever it stayed in the stop position. The problem is trying to find spares from ANYWHERE, I wanted a new gasket but couldn't find anything beyond mixing blades and bowls.
Thanks for the video! GREAT One question in case anybuddy has faced this: My kitchenaid Artisan (5KSM125) goes really fast even at stir level, and adjusting the screws on the speed panel would only make it go a little slower (like if they do not do the job). Yet, if I move the speed lever it would go faster (although some numbers won't really make a difference). Any ideas or insights? (speed control panel, Speed gobernor, speed control board??? They all look alright it seems...) Thanks!!!
Hi and thank you for your video. I had a slipping gear problem, on my artisan: the machine was running but the attachment pin wasn't revolving. The worm gear in the tower was damaged: I replaced it, replaced the grease and I though it was all going well but, upon reassembling, I found that the planetary cannot be rotated manually the full 360 any longer. It comes to a physical stop when I try to rotate it by hand after a little less than 360. It stops when I try to rotate it either way by means of manually driving the attachments pin. I tried to drive it manually because, after assembling everything back, white and black wires included, the machine would not give any sign of life nor rotate at any speed after being plugged in. Any idea of what it could be? Could it be too much grease in the planetary gear?
@@EveryBladeOfGrass1 Thank you for your reply. I actually reopened it a couple of times and tested the upper gear box: it moves freely. Only the planetary, once assembled, can't complete a 360 rotation. I have noticed that the locking pin of the planetary is not completely straight. Could it be that the whole shaft it seats into got bent when the external attachment gear fell off its seat and damaged the worm gear? Yet before disassembly the machine was still spinning, although idly.
It could be, it sounds like something is out of alignment or like you said may be bent just enough to hinder operation unfortunately hard to say without being there
I have a KitchenAid Classic stand mixer and its stuck in speed 4. It won't go slower or faster . The selector arm won't move. Do you think it is just jammed?
Thank you for this video! Before I take it apart could you help guide me what the initial problem may be? All speeds work except for High. When I select the top speed the mixer slows down to a crawl. If I move it to speed 8 is runs great again. Move it to High, it slows down. Kind of weird. Thanks in advance :)
My mixer when turned on goes straight into 5th gear or really fast instead of clicking through the different speeds do you think its the gears or the lever? Before I open it up :)
Hi,I have a kitchen aid model KSM90AC it’s more than ten years but I don’t use it often so when I try it today I saw some sparks inside the mixer then it stop no more power can you tell me what I am going to do thanks
I pulled both brushes out before I saw this video, so don’t know their orientation for re positioning. How can I refit theses without causing an issue? Thanks for your video
In the first few mins of the video you will be able to see how I removed them. The most important part is to put them back so that the curved or “c” part that has been worn in is the C should be up not on it’s side if that makes sense
You can shine a flashlight inside, and hopefully see how the brush should fit. Inside my model, there is an ever-so-slight rounded piece protruding into of one of the corners, so I matched my lopped off brush corner with that rounded piece inside. Voila, that's what was needed to make my mixer run again. Hopefully this will help the next person!
Hello, dunno if you're still answering, but i would like to know what type of gasket it is at 12:50 ? Is it plastic or the same as the one on the back ( 23:00 ) Thank's :)
While I run the kitchen Àid mixer,it' vibrates/ shakes very hard, that I have to hold top part of mixer to hold it down in place very firmly, coz fear of falling off the kitchen counter. Is it normal? My machine was bought last year and used 4 times only beside doesn't stop when try stop machine on speed lever!
None of that is normal, I would contact Kitchenaid and see if it is under warranty. If not you may have a bad speed control plate or the lever settings are not correct or some gears may be misaligned. Good luck 🤞
what was wrong with it? bc i have kitchen aid that i bought second hand that worked for maybe two times and then all of a sudden now the speed lever won't budge. it seems stuck. is that why you replaced the lever?
The speed lever is connected to a metal piece that is connected to a plastic piece that goes into the speed control plate it could be that the plastic piece has jammed into the speed control plate. The lever was replaced on this particular model because the knob had broken off. And you cannot get a replacement knob so the whole ever had to be replaced.
I wanted to know if you can help me I took my KitchenAid mixer apart to change the grease and add more cuz it was almost all gone and now my mixer is not working when I put it back together 😞
Unfortunately I probably won’t be able to. First thing to check would be to make sure all the spade connections are on tight and in the correct spot if you took off the cord
Hi. My mix speed control knob has a hair-trigger. By very slightly touching it, the control knob jumps to the first speed setting. Is there a way I can adjust this?
Nice video but I seem to have a different problem. I have a Kitchenaid Artisan that seems to have a short. It started flipping the circuit breaker as soon as it is turned on. I thought it might be a break in the cord or something simple, but I checked the cord and all the obvious connectors and it is in good condition. I’ve searched for other similar problems online and haven’t found anything. Any ideas?
that's a tough one, if the cord is good and the internal wires are fine it may be a component is bad??? speed control plate ??? hard to say without opening up the mixer
@@EveryBladeOfGrass1 Thanks for the thoughts. I do have it opened up but haven’t seen anything suspicious yet. Is there any way of testing the components?
thanks for the beautiful video! I followed it almost exactly when changing the speed lever - I just didn't disconnect the power clips from the rear plate (power unplugged) When I reassembled and plugged it back in - it wouldn't turn on. Any ideas?? SO SAD
IT WORKED! I put it all back together and finally MADE SURE the brushes were set in properly. -- 🙏❤🩹 -- tht must have been the culprit. Thanks for your help!
My artisan now will not shut off until unplugged and turns on immediately when plugged in, regardless of the control lever position. The speed is a constant low speed, with no ability to speed up or slow down the speed. Any thoughts?
@@EveryBladeOfGrass1 Does this require a replacement part? haha sorry... Is the control plate related to the control lever, or is it in the back of the machine?
I talk about this at 18:17 or so in the video sometimes it just takes a while to get it back on. Look for pinched wires or anything that may be out of sorts
Hi , my artisan is not staying on stop..I have to manually unplug everytime I need it to stop, or hold with my hand..if I connect it , it slides back to stir..what can I do to fix it?? Please and tnx 🙏
it may be that the spring has come off the control plate and needs to be reattached or you could have a bad control plate itself. 3:15 shows back of control plate 11:31 shows spring.
SIMPLE Fix: Remove One Screw to remove end cap exposing input wires. A single lever arm contact opening STOPS mixer. Slightly Bend the arm to allow the contact to fully open when speed lever is placed in OFF. Removing a few wire connectors and screws will allow easy access to expose the lever arm contact.
